Graphene reinforced metal and ceramic matrix composites: a review

Recent research upon the incorporation of graphene into copper matrix composites is reviewed in detail.
 An extensive account is given of the large number of processing methods that can be employed to prepare copper/graphene composites along with a description of the microstructures that may be produced. Processing routes that have been employed are described including powder methods, electrochemical processing, chemical vapour deposition, layer-by-layer processing, liquid metal infiltration among a number of others. The mechanical properties of the composites are described in detail along with an account of the structural factors that control mechanical behaviour. The mechanics and mechanisms of deformation are discussed, and the effect of factors such as the graphene content and the type of graphene used, along with processing conditions for the fabrication of the composites, is described. The functional properties of copper/graphene composites are also reviewed including their electrical and thermal properties, and tribological and corrosion behaviour. In each case, the effect of the graphene type and content, and processing conditions are also described. Finally, possible future applications of copper/graphene composites are discussed.

Aligning graphene in bulk copper: Nacre-inspired nanolaminated architecture coupled with in-situ processing for enhanced mechanical properties and high electrical conductivity

Metals can be strengthened by adding hard reinforcements, but such strategy usually compromises ductility and toughness. Natural nacre consists of hard and soft phases organized in a regular “brick-and-mortar” structure and exhibits a superior combination of mechanical strength and toughness, which is an attractive model for strengthening and toughening artificial composites, but such bioinspired metal matrix composite has yet to be made. Here we prepared nacre-like reduced graphene oxide (RGrO) reinforced Cu matrix composite based on a preform impregnation process, by which two-dimensional RGrO was used as “brick” and inserted into “□-and-mortar” ordered porous Cu preform (the symbol “□” means the absence of “brick”), followed by compacting. This process realized uniform dispersion and alignment of RGrO in Cu matrix simultaneously. Graphene-and-Copper Artificial Nacre Fabricated by a Preform Impregnation Process: Bioinspired Strategy for Strengthening-Toughening of Metal Matrix Composite.

The research works of graphene-reinforced metal matrix composites will be summarised in this paper. Comparatively, much less research works have been undertaken in this field. Graphene has been thought to be an ideal reinforcement material for composites due to its unique two-dimensional structure and outstanding physical and mechanical properties. It is expected to yield structural materials with high specific strength or functional materials with exciting thermal and electrical characteristics. This paper will introduce all kinds of graphene-reinforced metal matrix composites that have been studied. The microstructure and mechanical properties, processing techniques, graphene dispersion, strengthening mechanisms, interfacial reactions between graphene and the metal matrix and future research works in this field will be discussed.

Graphene-reinforced metal matrix nanocomposites – a review

The present work reports the mechanical improvement in Cu matrix composites reinforced with graphene nanosheets decorated with Ni nanoparticles (GNS–Ni) hybrids. The GNS–Ni hybrids were firstly synthesized by an in situ chemical reduction method and then incorporated into the Cu matrix to fabricate bulk GNS–Ni/Cu composites by spark plasma sintering. Benefiting from the unique characteristic of GNS–Ni hybrids, the GNS–Ni/Cu composites exhibited homogeneously dispersed GNSs and a strong GNS–Cu interface interaction, therefore leading to a 61% increase in Young׳s modulus (132 GPa) and a 94% improvement in yield strength (268 MPa) by addition of only 1.0 vol% GNSs. The GNS–Ni/Cu composites exhibited a load transfer mechanism as verified by a modified shear-lag model. Our study thus shows the potential for GNS–Ni hybrids to be successfully used as a reinforcing phase in metal matrix composites.
