Motivated by the seismic response of unanchored liquid storage tanks, their uplift mechanism under strong lateral loading is examined. Using three-dimensional finite element models, nonlinear static analysis is conducted to define the moment-rotation relationship of uplifting tanks resting on rigid foundation and describe the evolution of critical response parameters with increasing level of lateral loading. Meridional and hoop stress, as well as their distribution and evolution with increased uplift are computed. Comparing the numerical results with the corresponding results from anchored tanks, striking differences are observed on the values of compressive meridional stresses and their distribution around the tank circumference. Cyclic analysis, associated with repeated uplift at both sides of the tank, is also performed, to obtain the corresponding hysteretic response and verify the assumption of nonlinear-elastic tank behaviour, used in several previous works. Finally, an analytical solution is developed, capable of describing tank uplift in an efficient manner. The analytical solution accounts for the special features of uplift, obtained from the finite element solution, and can be used for simple and reliable assessment of seismic performance in unanchored liquid storage tanks.

Thin cylindrical shells are susceptible to cracking under long-term load and external impact, and it is of considerable scientific and technical value to investigate the nonlinear vibration response characteristics and monitor the health condition of the shell structure. Based on the Flügge shell theory, the nonlinear dynamic model for the thin cylindrical shell is established. By the partial Fourier transform combined with the residue theorem, the forced vibration generation and propagation mechanism of the thin cylindrical shell are investigated, and the analytical solution of forced vibration displacement in the space domain is obtained. Then, the local flexibility matrix is derived from the perspective of fracture mechanics, and the continuous coordination condition on both sides of the straight crack is constructed using the linear spring model. Combined with the wave superposition principle, the analytical approach for nonlinear vibration response is proposed to reveal the evolution law of vibration characteristics of the thin cylindrical shell with a straight crack, and then, a straight crack identification method based on natural frequency isolines and amplitude maximization methods is presented. Finally, the effect of various morphological information of the straight crack on the nonlinear vibration response characteristics of the thin cylindrical shell is studied in detail, and a numerical case is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed straight crack identification method.

Neuromorphic computing could enable the potential to break the inherent limitations of conventional von Neumann architectures, which has led to widespread research interest in developing novel neuromorphic memory devices, such as memristors and bioinspired artificial synaptic devices. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as crystalline porous polymers, have tailorable skeletons and pores, providing unique platforms for the interplay with photons, excitons, electrons, holes, ions, spins, and molecules. Such features encourage the rising research interest in COF materials in neuromorphic electronics. To develop high-performance COF-based neuromorphic memory devices, it is necessary to comprehensively understand materials, devices, and applications. Therefore, this Perspective focuses on discussing the use of COF materials for neuromorphic memory devices in terms of molecular design, thin-film processing, and neuromorphic applications. Finally, we provide an outlook for future directions and potential applications of COF-based neuromorphic electronics. 

Covalent Organic Frameworks for Neuromorphic Devices.

A mixed-dimensional dual-channel synaptic transistor composed of inorganic nanoparticles and organic nanowires was fabricated to expand the photoelectric gain range. The device can actualize the sensitization features of the nociceptor and shows improved responsiveness to visible light. Under electrical pulses with different polarities, the apparatus exhibits reconfigurable asymmetric bidirectional plasticity. Moreover, the devices demonstrate good operational tolerance and mechanical stability, retaining more than 60% of their maximum responsiveness after 100 consecutive/bidirectional and 1000 flex/flat operations. The improved photoelectric response of the device endows a high image recognition accuracy of greater than 80%. Asymmetric bidirectional plasticity is used as punishment/reward in a psychological experiment to emulate the improvement of learning motivation and enables real-time forward and backward deflection (+7 and -25°) of artificial muscle. The mixed-dimensional optoelectronic artificial synapses with switchable behavior and electron/hole transport type have important prospects for neuromorphic processing and artificial somatosensory nerves.

Mixed-Dimensional Nanoparticle-Nanowire Channels for Flexible Optoelectronic Artificial Synapse with Enhanced Photoelectric Response and Asymmetric Bidirectional Plasticity.

The integration and cooperation of nociceptors, neurons and synapses in the biological nervous system empower humans to efficiently perceive and process noxious information for avoiding dangers. Inspired by biological nervous systems, current artificial demonstrations include electrolyte-gate transistors, electrochemical metallization resistive switching devices and halide perovskite-based memristors. However, these devices suffer from integration difficulties and instability issues. Herein, we introduce a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible simple and stable Pt/V2O5/Pt sandwich structure and carefully construct and modulate the suboxide V2O5−x and Mott VO2 nanochannels in the layered V2O5 matrix to simulate brain-like processing and nervous pain perception functions, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the recognition accuracy of handwritten digits reaches 80% after only 5 training epochs and 89% after 52 epochs in a convolutional neural network based on the V2O5−x nanochannel synaptic device. The nociceptor with all key characteristics is perfectly imitated based on the VO2 nanochannel threshold switching device. Especially, an ultralow threshold level of 0.4 V and sub-millisecond incubation time are observed in the nociceptor simulation, which could be needed in special injury situations. The proposed drift and Mott nanochannels in one device hold a tremendous potential as synaptic and nociceptive emulators for artificial intelligence systems.

Research on steel tanks, particularly large-scale oil storage tanks, has increased significantly with the rapid development of the petrochemical industry. The focus on these thin-walled structures is related not only to the cost of the infrastructure, but also because failures due to accidents may generate huge economic costs, environmental losses, and casualties. The aim of the present study is an extensive experimental and numerical investigation of stress in a large-scale oil tank with a floating roof. Stresses in the shell and bottom of a large-scale oil storage tank are measured by a resistance strain gauge technique. Meanwhile, an improved 3-D finite element model is developed to analyze stresses in the tank. By comparing calculated results with experimental data, the validity of the developed finite element model is verified. Both experimental and numerical results suggest that the stress on the fillet joint is relatively high in the tank. The finite element model is used to study the effects of three key steel tank parameters on the stress of the fillet joint in the oil storage tank: the thickness of the annular bottom plate at the base, the radial width of the projection of the annular bottom plate outside the shell, and the radial width of the concrete ringwall. In addition, a new method related to the design of the annular bottom plate and concrete ringwall is proposed. This method will be helpful in improving the design of large-scale oil tanks and assessing their structural integrity.
