With the increasing adoption of location based services, privacy is becoming a major concern. To hide the identity and location of a request on location based service, most methods consider a set of users in a reasonable region so as to confuse their requests. When there are not enough users, the cloaking region needs expanding to a larger area or the response needs delay. Either way degrades the quality-of-service. In this paper, we tackle the privacy problem in a predication way by recommending a privacy-preserving path for a requester. We consider the popular navigation application, where users may continuously query different location based servers during their movements. Based on a set of metrics on privacy, distance and the quality of services that a LBS requester often desires, a secure path is computed for each request according to user's preference, and can be dynamically adjusted when the situation is changed. A set of experiments are performed to verify our method and the relationship between parameters are discussed in details. We also discuss how to apply our method into practical applications.

Privacy Preserving Path Recommendation for Moving User on Location Based Service

The invention provides a method and device for planning the secure path of a mobile terminal. The method comprises the following steps: receiving a service request, based on position information, of the mobile terminal, transmitting the service request to an LBS, and obtaining the response position of the service request from the LBS; obtaining the parameters of a plurality of pre-partitioned areas from the LBS; respectively calculating the vulnerability assessed values of the areas according to the parameters; calculating the secure path according to the vulnerability assessed values of the areas and the response position, and returning to the mobile terminal, wherein the secure path is a path with the minimum sum of reciprocals of the vulnerability assessed values of the areas from the current position of the mobile terminal to the response position. The factors such as communication foundation setting, path distribution and distribution of the mobile terminal in specific geographic areas are comprehensively considered, and a secure, reliable and accurate path planning scheme is provided for mobile users.

Method and device for planning secure path of mobile terminal

With the increasing importance of location based services in people’s daily lives, location related privacy becomes a critical issue. Most of the current solutions protect users’ privacy by cloaking users’ exact positions when they invoke requests on the location based service. In this paper, we tackle the location privacy problem in navigation applications in a different way. Based on the trusted third-party architecture and the k − anonymity criterion, we propose a coordinative path planning algorithm for collective privacy. The novelty resides on two folds. One fold is from the predication perspective rather than the current solutions’ focusing on on-site users. A user would be recommended a privacy-preserving path when he sends a navigation request. Another fold is by intentionally collective privacy rather than the traditionally independent calculation. The planned path for each user would be adjusted such that a set of users could be provided more privacy without degrading each user’s privacy. To evaluate the proposed solution, we perform a set of experiments on both synthesis data and practical data. The experimental results show the efficiency and effectiveness of our method.

Toward Collective Privacy Using Coordinative Path Planning

The trend towards delegating data processing to a remote party raises major concerns related to privacy violations for both end-users and service providers. These concerns have attracted the attention of the research community, and several techniques have been proposed to protect against malicious parties by providing secure communication protocols. Most of the proposed techniques, however, require the involvement of a third party, and this by itself can be viewed as another security concern. These security breaches can be avoided by following a new approach that depends on data sorted, managed, and stored in encrypted form at the remote servers. To realize such an approach, the encryption cryptosystem must support algebraic operations over encrypted data. This cryptosystem can be effective in protecting data and supporting the construction of programs that can process encrypted input and produce encrypted output. In fact, the latter programs do not decrypt the input, and therefore, they can be run by an un-trusted party without revealing their data and internal states. Furthermore, such programs prove to be practical in situations where we need to outsource private computations, especially in the context of cloud computing. Homomorphic cryptosystems are perfectly aligned with these objectives as they are a strong foundation for schemes that allow a blind processing of encrypted data without the need to decrypt them. In this dissertation we rely on homomorphic encryption schemes to secure cloud computing, services and routing protocols. We design several circuits that allow for the blind processing and management of data such that malicious parties are denied access to sensitive information. We select five areas to apply our models to. These models are easily customized for many other areas. We also provide prototypes that we use to study the performance and robustness of our models.

With the development of mobile networks and positioning technologies, location based service is becoming more and more popular, such as location-aware emergency response, advertisement, and car navigation system etc. However, while people enjoy more convenient life provided by location based services, their location privacy may leak. To tackle this problem, many researchers propose different ways to make users' privacy preserving and most of them focus on how to confuse users' true identities, or hide users' exact position while a user is in a cloaking square. The representative method is K-anonymity method which requires not less than k users in the same square when a location based service request occurs. In case there are not enough users in this cloaking square, the condition of the k-anonymity is not satisfied and location privacy would be leak. In this paper, we would tackle the problem of location privacy in a different way by predicating a safe path to users. Our objective is to provide more guarantee of privacy preserving for users under the K-anonymity criteria. We propose a path predicting algorithm from a user's current position to his/her destination. Every point on such path satisfies a location privacy policy under K-anonymity criteria. We also consider an upper threshold so as to balance privacy requirement and performance. Furthermore, the path would be dynamic adjusted according to users' movement and environment changes. Experiments are performed to verify our method and the experiment results show that this method is correct and efficient.
