The aim of the review was to assess the effect of patient education in ischaemic heart disease. Thirteen randomised controlled trials of moderate to good quality including 68,556 patients were selected. The effect on mortality, cardiac morbidity, hospitalisation and health-related quality of life was assessed and only non-significant tendencies of effect were found. The authors of the review nevertheless conclude that the review supports current rehabilitation programmes that include patient education. Further research in patient education, especially concerning the most effective methods of education delivery, is needed.

Electronic health literacy and health-related outcomes among older adults: A systematic review.

Failure to promote early detection and better management of hypertension will contribute to the increasing burden of cardiovascular diseases. This study aims to assess the gender differences in the prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension, together with its associated factors, in China and Sweden. We used data from two cross-sectional studies: the Vasterbotten Intervention Program in northern Sweden (n = 25,511) and the Shanghai survey in eastern China (n = 25,356). We employed multivariable logistic regression to examine the socio-demographics, lifestyle behaviours, and biological factors associated with the prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension. Men had a higher prevalence of hypertension (43% in Sweden, 39% in China) than their female counterparts (29 and 36%, respectively). In Sweden, men were less aware of, less treated for, and had less control over their hypertension than women. Chinese men were more aware of, had similar levels of treatment for, and had less control over their hypertension compared to women. Awareness and control of hypertension was lower in China compared to Sweden. Only 33 and 38% of hypertensive Chinese men and women who were treated reached the treatment goals, compared with a respective 48 and 59% in Sweden. Old age, impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes, a family history of hypertension or cardiovascular diseases, low physical activity and overweight or obesity were found to increase the odds of hypertension and its diagnosis. This study shows the age and gender differences in the prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension among adults in China and Sweden. Multisectoral intervention should be developed to address the increasing burden of sedentary lifestyle, overweight and obesity and diabetes, all of which are linked to the prevention and control of hypertension. Development and implementation of the gender- and context-specific intervention for the prevention and control of hypertension facilitates understanding with regard to the implementation barriers and facilitators.

Return to work following myocardial infarction (MI) represents an important indicator of recovery However, MI can cause patients to feel pressure, loneliness and inferiority during work and even detachment from employment after returning to work, which may affect their quality of life The aims of this study were to identify the influencing factors of Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with MI after returning to work and explore the correlations between these factors and HRQoL This was a cross-sectional study All participants were recruited from tertiary hospitals in China from October 2017 to March 2018 The general data questionnaire, Short-Form Health Survey-8 (SF-8), Health Promoting Lifestyle ProfileII (HPLPII), Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ) and Social Supporting Rating Scale (SSRS) were used to assess 326 patients with myocardial infarction returned to work after discharge Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to explore factors related to HRQoL in patients with MI after returning to work The sample consisted of 326 patients The mean total score of quality of life was 2803 ± 2554 According to the multiple linear regression analysis, next factors were associated with better HRQoL: younger age (B = − 0354, P = 0039), higher income (B = 0513, P = 0000), less co-morbidity (B = − 0440, P = 0000), the longer time taken to return to work (B = 0235, P = 0003), fewer stents installed (B = − 0359, P = 0003), participation in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) (B = − 1777, P = 0000), complete CR (B = − 1409, P = 0000), better health behaviors such as more health responsibility (B = 0172, P = 0000) and exercise (B = 0165, P = 0000), better nutrition (B = 0178, P = 0000) and self-realization (B = 0165, P = 0000), stress response (B = 0172, P = 0000), more social support such as more objective support (B = 0175, P = 0000), subjective support (B = 0167, P = 0000) and better utilization of social support (B = 0189, P = 0028), positive copping strategies such as more coping (B = 0133, P = 0000) and less yield (B = − 0165, P = 0000) HRQoL of MI patients after returning to work is not satisfactory Health behavior, coping strategies, social support are factors which can affect HRQoL A comprehensive and targeted guide may be a way to improve HRQoL and to assist patients’ successful return to society

Purpose Medication non-adherence is a major public health issue. Recent evidence suggests that depression, inadequate social support, and lower levels of self-efficacy are associated with poor medication adherence. However, the mechanism underlying the association among depression, social support, self-efficacy and medication adherence is unclear. This study aims to examine the mediating role of social support and self-efficacy between depression and medication adherence in older patients with coronary heart disease. Patients and Methods Data were collected from 238 hospitalized older patients with coronary heart disease. Depression, social support, self-efficacy, and medication adherence were assessed using structured questionnaires. A serial multiple mediation model was tested using the PROCESS macro for SPSS. Results A total of 238 older patients with CHD with a mean age of 70.5 years were involved in this cross-sectional study. Depression was negatively correlated with medication adherence in older patients with coronary heart disease. Social support and self-efficacy were positively associated with medication adherence, and fully mediated the relationship between depression and medication adherence. Three mediation paths were included in the model: (a) social support, (b) chain combination of social support and self-efficacy, and (c) self-efficacy. Conclusion Social support and self-efficacy explain the association of depression and medication adherence in older CHD patients and may be the keys target for enhanced intervention to improve medication adherence in older CHD patients with depression.
