Cooperative communication with energy harvesting capability increases network coverage and provides a green and sustainable solution for future wireless technologies. In this article, we analyze the performance of a two-way relay network, where bidirectional information exchange between two nodes takes place via simultaneous wireless information and power transfer-enabled relay node, operating in full-duplex (FD) mode over generalized Nakagami- <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$m$</tex-math></inline-formula> fading channels. Different nonlinear power amplifier (NLPA) models, such as solid-state power amplifier, traveling wave tube amplifier, and soft envelope limiter, are considered at the relay node. The effect of practical constraints, such as imperfect channel state information (CSI) and transceiver hardware impairments (HIs), is considered. Further, we consider the impact of residual self-interference (RSI) due to imperfect successive interference cancellation in the FD mode. For performance analysis, the closed-form expressions of outage probability (OP), asymptotic OP, system throughput, energy efficiency, ergodic capacity, and asymptotic ergodic capacity are derived. The diversity order of the considered network is evaluated. Further, the impact of imperfect CSI, NLPA, HIs, RSI, and other parameters are highlighted on the system performance. The performance of FD and half-duplex mode is also compared. Monte Carlo simulations confirm the accuracy of the derived closed-form expressions.

The 3GPP is investigating the concept of integrated access and backhaul (IAB) to provide high capacity wireless backhaul for 5G network. In this paper, we present an analysis of ergodic capacity for full-duplex IAB system, where full-duplex is introduced to further improve the ergodic capacity. Two kinds of interference are considered: the backward interference between two adjacent base stations and the residual self-interference introduced by full-duplex. We derive a closed-form solution of ergodic capacity by exploiting the probability density function of the end-to-end signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, and extend this derivation from three-hop system to arbitrary K-hop (K ≥3) system. Simulation results are further provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed mathematical analysis, and show an obvious advantage over half-duplex IAB system.

Ergodic Capacity Analysis for Full-Duplex Integrated Access and Backhaul System

This study solves the transmit power minimisation problem subject to a target quality-of-service constraint of a full-duplex (FD) two-way decode-and-forward relaying system with asymmetric packet-rates, where the two-way relaying system can operate in two different styles, i.e. half-duplex sources with full-duplex relaying (HDS-FDR) and full-duplex sources with full-duplex relaying (FDS-FDR) styles. For the FDS-FDR style, the relay node can use two strategies to handle the received signals from the sources, namely, physical-layer network coding (PNC) and physical-layer superposition coding (PSC), both of which are referred to as FDS-FDR-PNC and FDS-FDR-PSC styles, respectively. By transforming the transmit power minimisation problem into a two-stage problem, optimum power control (OPC) techniques are developed for the HDS-FDR, FDS-FDR-PNC and FDS-FDR-PSC styles, respectively, giving closed-form solutions for individual transmit power at the relay and the sources. Computer simulations are conducted and the results validate the proposed OPC techniques. It is shown that the FDS-FDR-PNC style performs best in terms of energy saving when the two sources' packet-rates are moderately asymmetric or symmetric. For the case that the packet-rates are strongly asymmetric, the FDS-FDR-PSC style can save more energy than the other two styles.

Transmit power minimisation for full-duplex two-way relaying systems with asymmetric packet-rates and quality-of-service requirements

In this paper, we study the throughput and outage probability (OP) of two-way relaying (TWR) communication system with energy harvesting (EH). The system model consists two source nodes and a relay node which operates in full-duplex (FD) mode. The effect of self-interference (SI) due to the FD operation on the system performance is evaluated for both one-way full duplex (OWFD) and two-way full duplex (TWFD) diagrams where the amplify-and-forward (AF) relay node collects energy harvesting with the time switching (TS) scheme. We first propose an individual OP expression for each specific source. Then, we derive the exact closed-form overall OP expression for the OWFD diagram. For the TWFD diagram, we propose an approximate closed-form expression for the overall OP. The overall OP comparison among hybrid systems (Two-Way Half-Duplex (TWHD), OWFD, TWFD) are also discussed.  Finally, the numerical/simulated results are presented for Rayleigh fading channels to demonstrate the correction of the proposed analysis.

Evaluating the effect of self-interference on the performance of full-duplex two-way relaying communication with energy harvesting

Cooperative communication is regarded as a promising technique for improving the reliability of wireless communication links and enhancing the radio coverage simultaneously. Unlike the conventional half-duplex (HD) mode relaying techniques, the full-duplex based two-way relaying (FD-TWR) enables data exchanges between two nodes to be completed within a single time-slot, thus resulting in a significant improvement in the spectrum efficiency. In this paper, the channel model of the FD-TWR is first given out, followed by deriving the critical performance metrics, including the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), the upper bound of the ergodic capacity and the closed-form solution of the proposed FD-TWR under amplify-and-forward (AF) mode. Furthermore, taking the limit of sum-transmit-power into account, we formulate the objective function of the optimal power allocation of FD-TWR as an extreme-value problem by deriving the optimal transmit power for both the source nodes and the relay node. As long as the self-interference (SI) signal in the FD-TWR nodes can be sufficiently suppressed, the proposed scheme is shown to outperform the conventional HD mode in terms of both the ergodic capacity and the outage probability. In addition, regardless of the practical SI power, the proposed FD-TWR is always capable of achieving its best performance with an aid of the proposed optimal power allocation scheme.
