In the most promising new window materials, the light-blocking property of the state-of-the-art transparent polycrystalline ceramics is still located in the UV range, which undoubtedly limits their applications. Herein, a transparent Y2Zr2O7:Tb (YZO:Tb) ceramic for light-shielding windows was prepared by a solid-state reaction and vacuum sintering method. Two simple and efficient routes, with doping concentrations varying and air-annealing temperatures regulating, were developed for the first time to control the content of defect clusters [TbY4+-O2--TbY4+] and [TbY4+-e•], enabling the optical cutoff waveband of these ceramics spanning from UV and BV to green light. These defect clusters generated from an air-annealing process were proposed for the relevant reaction mechanisms concerning light erasure behavior. The controllably tailoring of optical cutoff wavelength from Tb single-doped YZO ceramics, adjusted by defect clusters, may open a novel door to develop lanthanide-doped transparent ceramics for wide-range tunable light-shielding windows.

Defect Regulation of Terbium-Doped Y2Zr2O7 Transparent Ceramic for Wide-Range Multimode Tunable Light-Shielding Windows.

Tb3+ doped LaBO3 phosphors with various doping levels were synthesized by hydrothermal and post-calcination methods. The structure, morphology, chemical composition, and optical properties of the samples were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), Photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). XRD patterns reveal that Tb3+ doped LaBO3 crystals with monoclinic or orthorhombic structures can be obtained by adjusting the doping content of Tb3+. The XPS and EDS results indicate that the elements of La, O, B, and Tb were uniformly distributed in the samples, and some doping Tb3+ were oxidized to Tb4+. The prepared Tb3+ doped LaBO3 phosphors emit green emission at 543 nm under 271 nm excitation. The luminescence intensity is affected by the Tb3+ doping level, and concentration quenching will be observed due to an electric quadrupole-electric quadrupole interaction (p-p) process when the Tb3+ doping amount rises above 22 %. In particular, the luminescence properties of the Tb3+ doped LaBO3 phosphors are dramatically affected by the structure of the samples, and the luminescence intensity of the samples with orthorhombic structure is significantly higher than those with monoclinic structure. The decay curves of samples exhibit a double exponential behavior, and the average luminescence lifetime decreases with an increase in Tb3+ doping levels.

The separation of photogenerated carriers and the efficient utilization of high-level energy electrons (HLEEs) are the key processes for improving the performance of photocatalysts. Herein, Ce2Ti2O7/ZnIn2S4 (CTOZIS) and Bi3+-doped Ce2Ti2O7/ZnIn2S4 (BCTOZIS) photocatalyst were successfully synthesized through hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic hydrogen production of CTOZIS and BCTOZIS was 1233.7 μmol g−1 and 4168.5 μmol g−1 under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) within 5 h, which was 2.3 and 7.6 times than that of pure ZnIn2S4, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy and electrochemical characterization demonstrated that after Bi3+ doping, the electron-hole pairs recombination of BCTOZIS was inhibited, which may be ascribed to the establishment of a Z-scheme heterojunction and the presence of oxygen vacancy and Ce4+/Ce3+ redox center. The doping of Bi3+ resulted in the adjustment of the valence band position of Ce2Ti2O7 from 1.98 V to 1.92 V. This adjustment enabled direct transfer of HLEEs generated in Ce2Ti2O7 to the conduction band of ZnIn2S4 for hydrogen production with a wavelength below 423 nm. The synergistic effect of conventional Z-scheme electron transfer and the unique utilization of HLEEs boosted the photocatalytic performance of BCTOZIS. This study affords an innovative insight for designing visible-light-driven photocatalysts with high photocatalytic activity.
