The High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) is an ultralowemittance, kilometer-scale storage ring light source to be built in China. In this paper we will introduce the progress of the physical design and studies on HEPS over the past one year, covering issues of storage lattice design and optimization, booster design, injection design, collective effects, error study, insertion device effects, beam lifetime, etc.

Progress of Lattice Design and Physics Studies on the High Energy Photon Source

For the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS), a green-field fourth-generation storage ring light source, the preliminary design report (PDR) was completed in 2018, when the accelerator physics design had been basically finished. During the subsequent hardware and engineering design of the HEPS storage ring based on the PDR design, a few problems and challenges emerged, calling for modifications of the lattice. In this paper, we will introduce the background and reasons for the modifications and present the linear optics and simulation results for the nonlinear performance of the modified lattice of the HEPS storage ring. The modified lattice satisfies the requirements from hardware and engineering design.

In this paper we will review the evolution of the HEPS lattice design over the past ten years, focusing mainly on the linear optics design and nonlinear optimization.

Evolution of the Lattice Design for the High Energy Photon Source

A low-frequency quarter-wave superconducting β = 1 structure has been proposed as a main accelerating cavity for the newly planned storage ring light source with ultra-low emittance. In the development of High Energy Photon Source, a 6 GeV diffraction-limited light source at the Institute of High Energy Physics, a compact 166.6 MHz proof-of-principle cavity was designed. By optimizing its geometry, the cavity’s mechanical properties have been significantly improved with a focus on stress, pressure sensitivity, Lorentz-force detuning, microphonics and tuning capabilities. The cavity was later fabricated, post-processed and tested in a vertical manner at cryogenic temperatures. High peak electromagnetic fields have been achieved with an excellent cryogenic performance, largely exceeding the design goal and project specifications. In addition, the measured mechanical parameters are in good accordance with simulation results. Small Lorentz coefficients and low pressure sensitivities were measured during the tests. This constitutes the first demonstration of a solid low-frequency β = 1 superconducting cavity design with compact geometry and favorable mechanical properties.

Accelerator Physics Studies for the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) in Beijing

Both the Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) and Free Electron laser (FEL) are considered to be candidates of the fourth generation light source It is proposed to combine FEL into an ERL facility to integrate the advantages of both ERL and FEL, and to realize a compact two-purpose light source A test facility to verify this principle is being designed at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Beijing One main concern is the beam breakup (BBU) instability which limits the available beam current To this end, we developed a numerical simulation code to calculate the BBU threshold, which is found to have only a small reduction even in a high-FEL-bunch-charge operation mode, compared with that in the case with ERL bunches only However, even with ERL beam current far below BBU threshold, we observed a fluctuation of the central orbit of the ERL bunches in the presence of FEL beam We then present a physical model of BBU and understand the mechanism of the orbit-fluctuation in an ERL-FEL two-purpose machine We found that by choosing an appropriate FEL bunch repetition rate, the central orbit fluctuation amplitude can be well controlled

Beam Performance Simulation with Error Effects and Correction on HEPS Design

The High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) is a 6 GeV storage ring light source under construction in China. Several collimators installed in the vacuum chamber will be used as beam dump in the storage ring operation. Preliminary simulations showed that the temperature rise caused by the beam power deposited on the collimators will far exceed the melting point of the collimator material. In order to cure this problem, special kickers are proposed to be installed in the ring to modulate the beam during beam dumping, thereby increasing the size of the beam hit on the collimators. In this article, some simulation results of the density of particles on the collimators during beam dumping for different HEPS lattice and different kicker parameters are shown.
