Herein, a conjugated triazine-perylene diimide (triazine-PDI) polymer photocatalyst is prepared, and its full-spectrum photo-oxidative activity is evaluated. Enhanced dipole promotes the generation and separation of photo-induced charges, while its high degree of crystallinity results in a strong built-in electric field, which provides channels for the rapid transfer of the photo-generated charges. The advantageous structural characteristics enable a phenol degradation rate constant of 0.191 h−1, which is which is 12.7 and 2.2 times greater than bulk g-C3N4 and supramolecular PDI, respectively. Besides, triazine-PDI’s deep VB position led to a high rate of mineralization, i.e., a 79% total organic carbon removal rate in 24 h, which is 38% higher than that of self-assembled PDI. In summary, this work demonstrates the critical influence of crystallinity and built-in electric field adjustments for PDI photocatalytic activity.

Highly-crystalline Triazine-PDI Polymer with an Enhanced Built-in Electric Field for Full-Spectrum Photocatalytic Phenol Mineralization

Enzyme-like materials possess advantages over their natural counterparts due to their high stability, low cost, and ease of production and thus have been developed rapidly in the biomedical area. This paper introduced a novel conjugated microporous polymer (CMP-LS9) as the mimic of a photo-sensitized oxidase via Suzuki polymerization reactions with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing monomers. CMP-LS9 showed excellent nanopore properties and good light-harvesting capacity, leading to remarkable photo-sensitized oxidase mimic activity. Upon addition of glutathione (GSH) into the CMP-LS9/TMB system under visible light, effective inhibition of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation was observed. Therefore, an efficient colorimetric assay was developed for the detection of GSH. Quantitative detection of GSH in the range of 0.2 − 20 μM with a limit of detection of 0.06 μM was achieved. Moreover, this approach was applied for GSH analysis in human serum samples, which verified its promising practical application with high accuracy. This work not only provides an instructive strategy to design novel CMPs enzyme-like materials but also broadens the biosensing applications of CMPs.

Novel D-π-A conjugated microporous polymer as visible light-driven oxidase mimic for efficient colorimetric detection of glutathione

The rational design of artificial nanozymes has become a research focus owing to its low cost and high sensitivity. Herein, we present a facile ultrasonic strategy for the preparation of Fe 3 O 4 @MXene quantum dots (Fe 3 O 4 @MQDs) hybrid material, showing an enhanced peroxidase-like activity relative to pure MQDs and Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The catalytic mechanism of the Fe 3 O 4 @MQDs is studied by steady-state fluorometric analysis, revealing that Fe 3 O 4 @MQDs can effectively decompose H 2 O 2 to produce reactive hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Furthermore, density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the dramatic catalytic activity of Fe 3 O 4 @MQDs derives from the active sites of interfacial Fe-Ti dimer, which can significantly activate the absorbed H 2 O 2 and promote its decomposition into •OH. Accordingly, a sensitive colorimetric sensor is proposed to detect Cr (VI), displaying a low detection limit of 0.26 μM. This work opens up a new approach for the design and synthesis of MQDs-based peroxidase-like enzymes and demonstrates its great potential in the detection of environmental pollutants. • A novel Fe 3 O 4 @MQDs heterostructure was synthesized. • Peroxidase-like activity of Fe 3 O 4 @MQDs was significantly enhanced. • Experiment and DFT calculations revealed the possible reaction mechanism. • Colorimetric detection of Cr (VI) with a detection limit of 0.26 μM in the range from 0 to 60 μM.

Heteroatom-doped nanozyme progress and perspectives: From synthesis strategies to biomedical applications

High catalytic activity is essential for constructing a rapid and facile colorimetric sensor to determine H2O2 and interrelated biomolecules. CuCo2O4 microspheres were successfully prepared using a facile hydrothermal and pyrolysis method. The excellent peroxidase-like performance of CuCo2O4 microspheres was evaluated by employing a chromogenic substrate, colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), which can be catalytically oxidized by H2O2 into a blue ox-TMB product within only 1 min. Fluorescence results reveal that the catalytic activity of CuCo2O4 is attributed to the increasing amount of ˙OH from the decomposition of H2O2 and theoretical simulations by Materials Studio proved that the existence of a large number of oxygen vacancies effectively enhanced the catalytic performance. Based on the high catalytic activity of CuCo2O4 microspheres, a rapid colorimetric sensor with high selectivity has been designed for detecting H2O2 and ascorbic acid. Under optimal reaction conditions, the linear response ranges of H2O2 and AA are 1.00–10.00 mM and 1.00–10.00 μM. The detection limits of H2O2 and AA are 132.70 μM and 0.57 μM, respectively.
