Multifunctional SEI-like structure coating stabilizing Zn anode at large current and capacity

Lithium metal anodes are ideal for realizing high-energy-density batteries owing to their advantages, namely high capacity and low reduction potentials. However, the utilization of lithium anodes is restricted by the detrimental lithium dendrite formation, repeated formation and fracturing of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), and large volume expansion, resulting in severe "dead lithium" and subsequent short circuiting. Currently, the researches are principally focused on inhibition of dendrite formation toward extending and maintaining battery lifespans. Herein, we summarize the strategies employed in interfacial engineering and current-collector host designs as well as the emerging electrochemical catalytic methods for evolving-accelerating-ameliorating lithium ion/atom diffusion processes. First, strategies based on the fabrication of robust SEIs are reviewed from the aspects of compositional constituents including inorganic, organic, and hybrid SEI layers derived from electrolyte additives or artificial pretreatments. Second, the summary and discussion are presented for metallic and carbon-based three-dimensional current collectors serving as lithium hosts, including their functionality in decreasing local deposition current density and the effect of introducing lithiophilic sites. Third, we assess the recent advances in exploring alloy compounds and atomic metal catalysts to accelerate the lateral lithium ion/atom diffusion kinetics to average the spatial lithium distribution for smooth plating. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of metallic lithium anodes are presented, providing insights into the modulation of diffusion kinetics toward achieving dendrite-free lithium metal batteries.

Toward Dendrite-Free Metallic Lithium Anodes: From Structural Design to Optimal Electrochemical Diffusion Kinetics.

Batteries with a Li‐metal anode have recently attracted extensive attention from the battery communities owing to their high energy density. However, severe dendrite growth hinders their practical applications. More seriously, when Li dendrites pierce the separators and trigger short circuit in a highly flammable organic electrolyte, the results would be catastrophic. Although the issues of growth of Li dendrites have been almost addressed by various methods, the highly flammable nature of conventional organic liquid electrolytes is still a lingering fear facing high‐energy‐density Li‐metal batteries given the possibility of thermal runaway of the high‐voltage cathode. Recently, various kinds of nonflammable liquid‐ or solid‐state electrolytes have shown great potential toward safer Li‐metal batteries with minimal detrimental effect on the battery performance or even enhanced electrochemical performance. In this review, recent advances in developing nonflammable electrolyte for high‐energy‐density Li‐metal batteries including high‐concentration electrolyte, localized high‐concentration electrolyte, fluorinated electrolyte, ionic liquid electrolyte, and polymer electrolyte are summarized. Then, the solvation structure of different kinds of nonflammable liquid and polymer electrolytes are analyzed to provide insight into the mechanism for dendrite suppression and fire extinguishing. Finally, guidelines for future design of nonflammable electrolyte for safer Li‐metal batteries are provided.

Advanced Nonflammable Organic Electrolyte Promises Safer Li‐Metal Batteries: From Solvation Structure Perspectives

Lithium metal anode possesses overwhelming capacity and low potential but suffers from dendrite growth and pulverization, causing short lifespan and low utilization. Here, a fundamental novel insight of using single-atomic catalyst (SAC) activators to boost lithium atom diffusion is proposed to realize delocalized deposition. By combining electronic microscopies, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, theoretical simulations, and electrochemical analyses, we have unambiguously depicted that the SACs serve as kinetic activators in propelling the surface spreading and lateral redistribution of the lithium atoms for achieving dendrite-free plating morphology. Under the impressive capacity of 20 mA h cm-2, the Li modified with SAC-activator exhibits a low overpotential of ∼50 mV at 5 mA cm-2, a long lifespan of 900 h, and high Coulombic efficiencies during 150 cycles, much better than most literature reports. The so-coupled lithium-sulfur full battery delivers high cycling and rate performances, showing great promise toward the next-generation lithium metal batteries.

Lithium Atom Surface Diffusion and Delocalized Deposition Propelled by Atomic Metal Catalyst toward Ultrahigh-Capacity Dendrite-Free Lithium Anode.

A solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with robust mechanical property and high ionic conductivity is imperative for high-performance lithium metal batteries since it can efficiently impede the growth of notorious lithium dendrites. However, it is difficult to form such a SEI directly from an electrolyte. In this work, a crowding dilutant modified ionic liquid electrolyte (M-ILE) has been developed for this purpose. Simulations and experiments indicate that the 1,2-difluorobenzene (1,2-dfBen) dilutant not only creates a crowded electrolyte environment to promote the interaction of Li+-FSI-, leading to abundant aggregate ion pairs (AGGs), but also participates in the reduction to construct a robust and high ionic-conductive SEI. With this M-ILE, Li/LiFePO4 cells achieve a capacity retention of 96% over 250 cycles with 9.5 mg cm-2 mass loading, and Li/LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cells also deliver a discharge capacity of 132 mAh g-1 with a high retention of 88% after 100 cycles. Therefore, the use of a crowding diluent is considered to be an efficient way to construct an advanced SEI for a Li anode.

Tailoring Electrolyte Solvation for LiF-Rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase toward a Stable Li Anode.

Solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries attract great attention due to their high energy density and superior safety. However, the sluggish Li+ kinetics of solid electrolyte and poor interface compatibility between electrolyte and lithium anode lead to unsatisfied performance at room temperature, which severely limit their practical application. Herein, a Janus quasi‐solid electrolyte (JSE) design is reported, which modifies the Li+ solvation environment in succinonitrile (SN) plastic crystal electrolyte and creates 1D Li+ transportation channels. Density functional theory calculations and Raman results reveal that Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 changes the Li+ solvation environment from SN units to aggregated ion pairs, which accelerates the diffusion rate of Li+. As a result, JSE presents excellent ionic conductivity (0.73 mS cm−1) and high lithium transference number (0.72). With this efficient JSE, Li symmetric cells deliver excellent cycle stability over 600 h with a low over potential of 60 mV. LiFePO4|JSE|Li solid‐state battery delivers an impressive performance with a specific discharge capacity of 152 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at room temperature under 0.5 C. Moreover, the corresponding pouch cell also shows outstanding performance (140 mAh g−1 under 0.5 C) and withstands abuse tests such as bending and cutting, demonstrating its superior safety for future utilization.

Janus Electrolyte with Modified Li+ Solvation for High‐Performance Solid‐State Lithium Batteries

Flexible pressure sensors are essential components for wearable smart devices and intelligent systems. Significant progress has been made in this area, reporting on excellent sensor performance and fascinating sensor functionalities. Nevertheless, geometrical and morphological engineering of pressure sensors is usually neglected, which, however, is significant for practical application. Here, we present a digitized manufacturing methodology to construct a new class of iontronic pressure sensors with optionally defined configurations and widely modulated performance. These pressure sensors are composed of self-defined electrode patterns prepared by a screen printing method and highly tunable pressure-sensitive microstructures fabricated using 3D printed templates. Importantly, the iontronic pressure sensors employ an iontronic capacitive sensing mechanism based on mechanically regulating the electrical double layer at the electrolyte/electrode interfaces. The resultant pressure sensors exhibit high sensitivity (58 kPa−1), fast response/recovery time (45 ms/75 ms), low detectability (6.64 Pa), and good repeatability (2000 cycles). Moreover, our pressure sensors show remarkable tunability and adaptability in device configuration and performance, which is challenging to achieve via conventional manufacturing processes. The promising applications of these iontronic pressure sensors in monitoring various human physiological activities, fabricating flexible electronic skin, and resolving the force variation during manipulation of an object with a robotic hand are successfully demonstrated.

Digitized Construction of Iontronic Pressure Sensor with Self-Defined Configuration and Widely Regulated Performance

The basic principles of flow cytometer are introduced, on the basis of diode pump solid state laser (532 nm) as a excitation source and a high gain avalanche photodiode (APD) arrays as a light detector, a verification opitical system is built. Then, Spherotech Rainbow Calibration Particle RCP-30-5A is used to evaluate the performance of the opitical system, the fluorescence PE signal histogram of RCP-30-5A microshphere shows that the number of individual peaks is close to eight, which is close to the world advanced level.

High gain avalanche photodiode (APD) arrays in flow cytometer opitical system

Skin wounds, especially large-area skin trauma, would bring great pain and even fatal risk to patients. In recent years, local autologous cell transplantation has shown great potential for wound healing and re-epithelialization. However, when the cell suspension prepared with normal saline is delivered to the wound, due to its low viscosity, it is easy to form big drops in the deposition and lose them from the wound bed, resulting in cell loss and uneven coverage. Here, we developed a novel air-assisted atomization device (AAAD). Under proper atomization parameters, 1% (w/v) sodium alginate (SA) solution carrier could be sprayed uniformly. Compared with normal saline, the run-off of the SA on the surface of porcine skin was greatly reduced. In theory, the spray height of AAAD could be set to achieve the adjustment of a large spray area of 1–12 cm2. In the measurement of droplet velocity and HaCaT cell viability, the spray height of AAAD would affect the droplet settling velocity and then the cell delivery survival rate (CSR). Compared with the spray height of 50 mm, the CSR of 100 mm was significantly higher and could reach 91.09% ± 1.82% (92.82% ± 2.15% in control). For bio-ink prepared with 1% (w/v) SA, the viability remained the same during the 72-h incubation. Overall, the novel AAAD uniformly atomized bio-ink with high viscosity and maintained the viability and proliferation rate during the delivery of living cells. Therefore, AAAD has great potential in cell transplantation therapy, especially for large-area or irregular skin wounds.
