Core-shell Zn/Co MOFs derived Co3O4/CNTs as an efficient magnetic heterogeneous catalyst for persulfate activation and oxytetracycline degradation

The development of highly active and stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) bifunctional performances is crucial for efficient water splitting. In this work, such electrocatalysts are obtained, first in two-step hydrothermal reactions to form Ni3S2/MnS nanosheets on Ni foam (NF/Ni3S2/MnS), then by slightly electroxidizing the Ni3S2/MnS to generate tremella-like Ni3S2/MnS-O with ultrathin nanosheets and abundant oxygen vacancies (denoted as NF/T(Ni3S2/MnS-O)) favorable for electrocatalyzing HER and OER. Benefiting from the abundant oxygen vacancies, tremella-like ultrathin nanosheets with hierarchical porous structure and large active surface area, NF/T(Ni3S2/MnS-O) shows high catalytic performance, including lower overpotential and electrochemistry stability for both HER and OER than so far reported MnOx and other metal oxides/sulfides. The NF/T(Ni3S2/MnS-O) directly used as bifunctional electrodes for overall water splitting exhibits a low voltage of 1.54 V with a low overpotential of 0.31 V at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, a fast H2 and O2 evolution speed of 4.13 and 2.04 μmol min−1 and a good electrochemistry stability with unchanged current density of 10 mA cm−2 for 50 h.

Controlling molecular defects via element doping is an effective strategy for tailoring electronic structures and charge separation in photocatalysts. However, the rational design of self-doped catalysts is generally confronted with the need for expensive reagents, high dopant ratios and environmentally unfriendly materials. Herein, carbon self-doped graphitic carbon nitride (DCN-x) is obtained via one-pot thermal polymerization of urea and D-mannitol. The sp2-hybridized nitrogen atoms are partially substituted by carbon atoms from dopants. The corresponding defects provide the photocatalyst with extended light harvesting up to 600 nm, a tunable optical bandgap, and the formation of more delocalized electrons with a uniform distribution at the defect scope of a C–C bond. In addition, increased band-tail states are found in DCN-3, which greatly enhance charge separation. A high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 3180 μmol g−1 h−1 is achieved under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), which is about 5.3 fold higher than that of pristine g-C3N4. This work provides a green and economical method to synthesize g-C3N4 with controllable carbon self-doping sites for efficient energy conversion related applications.
