Precisely fabricating Ce-O-Ti structure to enhance performance of Ce-Ti based catalysts for selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3

Abstract Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is now an established NOx removal technology for industrial flue gas as well as for diesel engine exhaust gas. However, it is still a big challenge to develop a novel low-temperature catalyst for NH3-SCR of NOx, especially at a temperature below 200°C. In the past few years, many studies have demonstrated the potential of iron (Fe)-based catalysts as low-temperature catalysts for NH3-SCR of NOx. Herein, we summarize the recent progress and performance of Fe-based catalysts for low-temperature NH3-SCR of NOx. Catalysts are divided into three categories: single FexOy, Fe-based multimetal oxide, and Fe-based multimetal oxide with support catalysts. The catalytic activity and selectivity of Fe-based catalysts are systematically analyzed and summarized in light of some key factors such as activation energy, specific surface area, morphology, crystallinity, preparation method and precursor, acid sites, calcination temperature, other metal dopant/substitute, and redox property of catalysts. In addition, H2O/SO2 tolerance and the NH3-SCR reaction mechanism over Fe-based catalysts, including Eley-Rideal and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism, are emphasized. Lastly, the perspectives and future research directions of low-temperature NH3-SCR of NOx are also proposed.

A set of novel iron doped cerium‐tungsten catalysts were prepared by sol‐gel method with a view to their application for low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3 in power plants. With a molar ratio Fe/W/Ce of 0.5:1:1, a NOx reduction of >90% at 200 °C was achieved. In Fe-W-Ce catalysts with low iron oxide content, it was found that the iron compounds were highly dispersed and formed a solid solution within the cerium oxide lattice, which promoted the SCR activity. Large amounts of iron in the catalysts might form a layer of Fe2O3 on the catalyst surface, which induced the synergistic inhibition effect among Fe, Ce and W species. Moreover, the Fe‐W‐Ce catalysts possessed a high resistance to changed operation parameters as well as to deactivation by SO2 and/or H2O. The novel catalyst showed to be competitive among recently developed low‐temperature SCR catalysts.

Novel Fe‐W‐Ce Mixed Oxide for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx with NH3 at Low Temperatures

Fe2O3 particle catalysts were experimentally studied in the low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3. The effects of reaction temperature, oxygen concentration, [NH3]/[NO] molar ratio and residence time on SCR activity were studied. It was found that Fe2O3 catalysts had high activity for the SCR of NO with NH3 in a broad temperature range of 150-270 degrees C, and more than 95% NO conversion was obtained at 180 degrees C when the molar ratio [NH3]/[NO] = 1, the residence time was 0.48 seconds and O2 volume fraction was 3%. In addition, the effect of SO2 on SCR catalytic activity was also investigated at the temperature of 180 degrees C. The results showed that deactivation of the Fe2O3 particles occurred due to the presence of SO2 and the NO conversion decreased from 99.2% to 58% in 240 min, since SO2 gradually decreased the catalytic activity of the catalysts. In addition, X-ray diffraction, Thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the fresh and deactivated Fe2O3 catalysts. The results showed that the deactivation caused by SO2 was due to the formation of metal sulfates and ammonium sulfates on the catalyst surface during the de-NO reaction, which could cause pore plugging and result in suppression of the catalytic activity.
