The encapsulation of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) with an inert protective layer against moisture and the environment is a promising approach to overcome hinderances for their practical use in optoelectronic and biomedical applications. Herein, a facile method for synthesizing highly luminescent and biocompatible CsPbBr3@SiO2 core–shell PNCs with a controlled SiO2 thickness, which are suitable for both cell imaging and drug delivery, is reported. The synthesized CsPbBr3@SiO2 core–shell PNCs exhibit bright green emission at 518 nm upon excitation of 374 nm. Interestingly, a significant increase in the photoluminescence intensity is observed with an increase in the SiO2 shell thickness, which varies with the increasing reaction time. Cytotoxicity results indicate that the CsPbBr3@SiO2 core–shell PNCs are nontoxic, making them suitable for in vitro cell imaging using HeLa cells. Furthermore, doxorubicin physically adsorbed on the surface of CsPbBr3@SiO2 core–shell PNCs is efficiently released in cells when the drug-loaded perovskite nanoprobes are injected in the cells, indicating that these core–shell nanoparticles can be used for drug loading and delivery. The results of this study suggest that the CsPbBr3@SiO2 core–shell PNCs can pave the way for new biomedical applications and processes.

Highly luminescent biocompatible CsPbBr3@SiO2 core–shell nanoprobes for bioimaging and drug delivery

Metal halide perovskite nanostructures have sparked intense research interest due to their excellent optical properties. In recent years, although the green and red perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have achieved a significant breakthrough with the external quantum efficiency exceeding 20%, the blue PeLEDs still suffer from inferior performance. Previous reviews about blue PeLEDs focus more on 2D/quasi-2D or 3D perovskite materials. To develop more stable and efficient blue PeLEDs, a systematic review of blue perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) is urgently demanded to clarify how PQDs evolve. In this review, the recent advances in blue PQDs involving mixed-halide, quantum-confined all-bromide, metal-doped and lead-free PQDs as well as their applications in PeLEDs are highlighted. Although several excellent PeLEDs based on these PQDs have been demonstrated, there are still many problems to be solved. A deep insight into the advantages and disadvantages of these four types of blue-emitting PQDs is provided. Then, their respective potential and issues for blue PeLEDs have been discussed. Finally, the challenges and outlook for efficient and stable blue PeLEDs based on PQDs are addressed.

CsPbX3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted much attention from researchers because of their excellent photoelectric properties like high quantum yield, large absorption cross section, and simple preparation process. The addition of ligands in the synthesis process has a significant effect on the microstructure and photophysical properties of solution-processed NCs, which needs further extensive studies. In this Letter, the effects of ligand electronegativity on the size and photoluminescence (PL) properties of CsPbBr3 NCs were reported. One is typical oleic acid with weak electronegativity, and another is 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropionic sulfonic acid with strong electronegativity. The third is their typical mixture with a molar ratio of 1:1. With the increase in ligand electronegativity, the size of CsPbBr3 NCs increases significantly. However, in contrast to the traditional quantum size confinement effect, the PL peak exhibits an abnormal blue shift gradually and the ligand passivation effect on NC surface defects also becomes more significant. The physical mechanism of this anomalous PL shift phenomena of CsPbBr3 NCs was investigated using the time-resolved PL spectrum and transient absorption spectrum.
