Wounds are one of the most common health issues, and the cost of wound care and healing has continued to increase over the past decade. The first step in wound healing is haemostasis, and the development of haemostatic materials that aid wound healing has accelerated in the past 5 years. Numerous haemostatic materials have been fabricated, composed of different active components (including natural polymers, synthetic polymers, silicon-based materials and metal-containing materials) and in various forms (including sponges, hydrogels, nanofibres and particles). In this Review, we provide an overview of haemostatic materials in wound healing, focusing on their chemical design and operation. We describe the physiological process of haemostasis to elucidate the principles that underpin the design of haemostatic wound dressings. We also highlight the advantages and limitations of the different active components and forms of haemostatic materials. The main challenges and future directions in the development of haemostatic materials for wound healing are proposed. Uncontrolled bleeding is a major cause of death, incentivizing the development of biomaterials that aid haemostasis and wound healing. This Review highlights the active components and forms of haemostatic materials, with a focus on their chemical design, and considers future trends in their development.

Advancements in nanofibers for wound dressing: A review

With the increasing demand for wound care and treatment worldwide, traditional dressings have been unable to meet the needs of the existing market due to their limited antibacterial properties and other defects. Electrospinning technology has attracted more and more researchers’ attention as a simple and versatile manufacturing method. The electrospun nanofiber membrane has a unique structure and biological function similar to the extracellular matrix (ECM), and is considered an advanced wound dressing. They have significant potential in encapsulating and delivering active substances that promote wound healing. This article first discusses the common types of wound dressing, and then summarizes the development of electrospun fiber preparation technology. Finally, the polymers and common biologically active substances used in electrospinning wound dressings are summarized, and portable electrospinning equipment is also discussed. Additionally, future research needs are put forward.

Electrospun Medicated Nanofibers for Wound Healing: Review

Electrospinning is a method of preparing microfibers or nanofibers by using an electrostatic force to stretch the electrospinning fluid. Electrospinning has gained considerable attention in many fields due to its ability to produce continuous fibers from a variety of polymers and composites in a simple way. Electrospun nanofibers have many merits such as diverse chemical composition, easily adjustable structure, adjustable diameter, high surface area, high porosity, and good pore connectivity, which give them broad application prospects in the biomedical field. This review systematically introduced the factors influencing electrospinning, the types of electrospun fibers, the types of electrospinning, and the detailed applications of electrospun fibers in controlled drug release, biological dressings, tissue repair and enzyme immobilization fields. The latest progress of using electrospun fibers in these fields was summarized, and the main challenges to be solved in electrospinning technology were put forward.

Preparation of antibacterial PCL/PVP-AgNP Janus nanofibers by uniaxial electrospinning

A novel adsorbent composite was synthesized by combining amino-functionalized MIL-125 (Ti) with carbonized wormwood (CW), and used to remove six direct dyes. The effect of carbon matrix type on the properties of the composites was investigated. The samples were characterized by chemical, morphological, thermal behavior, specific surface area, and pore diameter analysis. NH2-MIL-125 (Ti)/CW exhibits good crystallinity, high specific surface area, multi-pore size distribution, thermal stability and more active groups compared with carbonized cotton fiber and activated carbon as the matrix. Under optimal conditions, the adsorption process of NH2-MIL-125 (Ti)/CW on Direct Yellow R and Direct Dark Green NB is consistent with the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity of NH2-MIL-125 (Ti)/CW is 255.0 and 296.7 mg/g, which is superior to 140.4 and 220.3 mg/g of NH2-MIL-125 (Ti), 58.9 and 97.8 mg/g of CW and other composite adsorption materials in a distilled water system. It is worth mentioning that NH2-MIL-125 (Ti)/CW can even achieve adsorption removal effects of 470.8 and 500.0 mg/g at pH= 2. This work may provide a theoretical reference for the application of biochar and metal-organic frameworks in the field of wastewater treatment.

Optimization of Purpureocillium lilacinum Derived from Spent Mushroom Substrate and Its Potential to Control Soybean Cyst Nematode

Preparation and release of novel frog egg-like microspheres by coaxial electrostatic spray technique

Microcapsules containing nepeta essential oil (NEO) are prepared by electro-atomization complex coacervation with sodium alginate and gelatin as wall materials. The effects of conditions such as sodium alginate solution concentration, core-to-wall ratio and emulsifier content on the release of essential oil and mosquito repellent properties of the microcapsules are studied. The microcapsules prepared under optimal preparation conditions have good performance and morphology, the encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity being 86.65% and 13.93%, respectively. The prepared microcapsules have adequate morphological characteristics observed using scanning electron microscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectra and thermogravimetric analysis show that NEO is successfully loaded in the microcapsules, and the thermal stability of NEO is improved. In addition, the results of release and repellent tests show that the NEO in the microcapsules could achieve stable release within 15 days and maintain an avoidance rate above 80% within 48 h, indicating the potential application of the microcapsules in the field of mosquito repellents. © 2023 Society of Industrial Chemistry.
