Desalination methods have become more critical due to the worsening water scarcity problem. Reverse osmosis (RO), forward osmosis (FO), electrodialysis (ED), ion exchange (IX), membrane distillation (MD), multiple effect distillation (MED), and vapor compression distillation (VCD) are those standard desalination processes that are expensive and impose various environmental impacts. Using biological systems based on living microorganisms for seawater desalination is free of any environmental damage, and biodesalination processes using microalgae for producing portable water have recently become the cost-competitive option according to the progression of technology. Compared to other living organisms, microalgae offer unique advantages such as higher photosynthetic capability, shorter growth cycles, higher flexibility, and the ability to grow in seawater and wastewater. They can also absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis during their growth, making them appropriate candidates for more eco-friendly water desalination. Light intensity, temperature, pH, saline water nutrients, and the selected microalgae species are different operating parameters affecting desalination efficiency. This review paper thoroughly investigates biodesalination methods using various microalgae species in various conditions, and additional suggestions for future studies and process optimization are recommended. 

Application of marine microalgae in biodesalination and CO2 biofixation: A review

Mineral carbonation of mafic-ultramafic rocks has been highlighted as a promising way for permanent carbon capture and storage. Carbonatization involves the release of Ca, Mg and Fe from silicate minerals by dissolution and reaction in the aqueous phase to form stable carbonate minerals. Diopside is one of the most abundant mafic minerals in the lithosphere and contributes a portion of Mg and Ca to surface weathering. Here, we present detailed processes of the carbonation-coupled serpentinization of diopsidite from the Yushishan Nb-Ta deposit in the Altun Mountain, northwest China. Diopsidite is the prograde metamorphic product of siliceous dolomitic marble by full decarbonation process. Retrograde serpentinization and carbonation of diopsidite lead to the addition of CO2, H2O, light rare earth elements and fluid-mobile elements but the loss of SiO2. The diopsides are replaced by calcite and chrysotile by mineral alteration to form pseudomorphic textures. Dissolution-precipitation processes significantly affect diopside serpentinization and carbonation. The carbonation of diopside-rich rocks may be suitable for permanent CO2 storage.

Emerging investigator series: Kinetics of Diopside Reactivity for Carbon Mineralization in Mafic-Ultramafic Rocks

The structural fracture of the coal seam with its low permeability is the dominant reason for the “difficult gas out” of the broken soft coal seam. The brittleness of the roof and floor rock stratum of the broken soft coal seam has a significant effect on the fracture extension pressure of the surrounding rock after casing perforation and hydraulic fracturing of the horizontal well for coalbed methane (CBM). In this paper, 15 rock samples were scientifically collected from the roof and floor of the main mining coal seam of the Early Permian coal-bearing series in the Xinxie-1 well of the Huainan Coalfield in Anhui Province, China. On the basis of mineral composition analysis of these samples, the influence of mineral composition on the mechanics properties of the rock at the roof and floor of the coal seam was investigated. The correlation analysis and gray correlation analysis were adopted to construct an evaluation method for the brittleness of the rock at the roof and floor of the coal seam based on the mineral content. The results indicated that the most significant compositions of the minerals in the rock at the roof and floor of the broken soft coal seam were quartz and clay minerals. The most significant types of rock cementation are quartz agglomeration and rhodochrosite cementation. Pore destruction as a result of cementation was much greater than that of compaction. In comparison to clay minerals, the variation in the content of brittle minerals such as quartz, plagioclase, and siderite in the rock showed more sensitivity to the mechanics properties of the rock. The more sensitive minerals for compressive strength (CS), shear strength (SS), modulus of elasticity (E), softening coefficient (K), and Poisson’s ratio (μ) are quartz, those for tensile strength (TS) are plagioclase and siderite, and those for Poisson’s ratio are clay minerals. Based on the established mineral content weighting analysis method, it was calculated that the brittleness index (BI) of the rocks at the roof of the 13-1, 11-2, 9-2, and 4-2 coal seams was larger, which was advantageous for the formation of longer fracturing crack networks. This is theoretical guidance for the optimization of horizontal well fracturing design in the deep coal beds of the Huainan Coalfield.

Influence of Mineral Composition on Rock Mechanics Properties and Brittleness Evaluation of Surrounding Rocks in Soft Coal Seams

The increasing extent of greenhouse gas emissions has necessitated the development of techniques for atmospheric carbon dioxide removal and storage. Various techniques are being explored for carbon storage including geological sequestration. The geological sequestration has various avenues such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs, coal-bed methane reservoirs, and mafic and ultramafic rocks. Different trapping mechanisms are in play in these subsurface storage systems. In these sequestration sites, the mafic and ultramafic rocks are best suited for long-term and effective sequestration as they comprise minerals, conducive for chemical alteration, forming stable carbonates. However, these sites often suffer from distinct disadvantages of injectivity issues due to their low permeability and porosity. This study investigates the potential of sequestration in the rock samples obtained from one such site located in India. The rock samples are first characterized using various techniques including X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The mineralogical characterization shows that the rock sample contains approximately 10% of diopside. The samples were put in the reactor chamber comprising CO2, which were then investigated using FESEM analysis. Additionally, a reservoir block simulation using commercial software was conducted with the representative minerals in the sample to evaluate the CO2 sequestration potential. The simulation result suggests the formation of magnesite which corresponds to a major part of CO2 mineral trapping. The reduced injectivity due to low porosity and permeability in this rock can be addressed using hydraulic fracturing. The geomechanical behavior of the rock sample for hydraulic fracturing is studied using the Brazilian disc test. The Monte Carlo-based uncertainty analysis was conducted using the tensile strength data of the sample. Results suggest that the most likely fracturing pressure is 2100 psi for this rock sample. 

Investigation of an Indian Site with Mafic Rock for Carbon Sequestration

Abstract Corundum is rarely found in situ within alkali syenites. A corundum-bearing syenite was found in the Yushishan rare metal deposits of the eastern section of the Altyn Tagh fault in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, but the characteristics and formation of corundum remain unknown. We describe a corundum-bearing syenite dike emplaced in biotite plagioclase gneiss that suffered overprinted deformation with characteristics of mylonitization. The corundum crystals have variable grain sizes, and the largest ones are megacrystic with growth zoning. The corundum crystals contain a variety of mineral inclusions that are divided into primary and secondary. The primary mineral inclusions within the corundum include variable contents of Fe-Ti oxide needles, ilmenite, zircon, monazite-(Ce), potassium feldspar, pyrochlore, columbite-(Fe), magnetite, samarskite-(Y), and pyrite that indicate corundum crystallized in peraluminous Zr-rich and Si-poor alkali rock with variable TiO2 contents. Secondary mineral inclusions include Zn-rich hercynite, ilmenite, magnetite, annite, fluorapatite, and intergrowths of ilmenite with columbite-(Fe) and goethite that reveal late-stage influx of Zn-, Ti-, Fe-, and F-bearing fluids into corundum that caused metasomatism and element migration and mineral precipitation. The trace element analysis of corundum shows high-Fe and -Ga contents and low-Mg and -Cr contents that are consistent with the characteristics of corundum of magmatic origin. The trace element characteristics and the oxygen isotopes (6.2–8.2‰) results indicate that corundum crystallized in melts with the involvement of Al-rich and Si-poor crustal material.
