Neural implicit fields are powerful for representing 3D scenes and generating high-quality novel views, but it remains challenging to use such implicit representations for creating a 3D human avatar with a specific identity and artistic style that can be easily animated. Our proposed method, AvatarCraft, addresses this challenge by using diffusion models to guide the learning of geometry and texture for a neural avatar based on a single text prompt. We carefully design the optimization framework of neural implicit fields, including a coarse-to-fine multi-bounding box training strategy, shape regularization, and diffusion-based constraints, to produce high-quality geometry and texture. Additionally, we make the human avatar animatable by deforming the neural implicit field with an explicit warping field that maps the target human mesh to a template human mesh, both represented using parametric human models. This simplifies animation and reshaping of the generated avatar by controlling pose and shape parameters. Extensive experiments on various text descriptions show that AvatarCraft is effective and robust in creating human avatars and rendering novel views, poses, and shapes. AvatarCraft: Transforming Text into Neural Human Avatars with Parameterized Shape and Pose Control

The creation of a parameterized stylized character involves careful selection of numerous parameters, also known as the "avatar vectors" that can be interpreted by the avatar engine. Existing unsupervised avatar vector estimation methods that auto-create avatars for users, however, often fail to work because of the domain gap between realistic faces and stylized avatar images. To this end, we propose SwiftAvatar, a novel avatar auto-creation framework that is evidently superior to previous works. SwiftAvatar introduces dual-domain generators to create pairs of realistic faces and avatar images using shared latent codes. The latent codes can then be bridged with the avatar vectors as pairs, by performing GAN inversion on the avatar images rendered from the engine using avatar vectors. Through this way, we are able to synthesize paired data in high-quality as many as possible, consisting of avatar vectors and their corresponding realistic faces. We also propose semantic augmentation to improve the diversity of synthesis. Finally, a light-weight avatar vector estimator is trained on the synthetic pairs to implement efficient auto-creation. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of SwiftAvatar on two different avatar engines. The superiority and advantageous flexibility of SwiftAvatar are also verified in both subjective and objective evaluations.

SwiftAvatar: Efficient Auto-Creation of Parameterized Stylized Character on Arbitrary Avatar Engines

Metaverse is an online platform that combines a wide range of technologies. It integrates the physical and virtual worlds to connect with other users in real-time. The application and development of the metaverse platform are growing in a broad range. For such platforms, an avatar represents the user to explore the metaverse platform. Therefore, the avatar, a 3D digital twin representing the user's expression and action in the metaverse, is essential to metaverse development. Creating a realistic 3D avatar animation is the next level of avatar development. The rigging step, an integration process of bones and joints to an object, influences the avatar animation. This study shows the concept of vertex weight value optimization adapted by the Differential Evolution meta-heuristic algorithm in the rigging process to create a realistic avatar animation. The fitness function represents how much a mesh driven by the corr. vertex weights is offset to a goal position under the influence of multiple joints. The proposed methodology is investigated for the challenging use case of animating face expressions, and shows the fitness function value of representing an animation could be minimized by 54.5%, from 1.49 of the initial design down to 0.68. 

3D Avatar Animation Optimization in Metaverse by Differential Evolution Algorithm

Trained computer vision models are assumed to solve vision tasks by imitating human behavior learned from training labels. Most efforts in recent vision research focus on measuring the model task performance using standardized benchmarks. Limited work has been done to understand the perceptual difference between humans and machines. To fill this gap, our study first quantifies and analyzes the statistical distributions of mistakes from the two sources. We then explore human vs. machine expertise after ranking tasks by difficulty levels. Even when humans and machines have similar overall accuracies, the distribution of answers may vary. Leveraging the perceptual difference between humans and machines, we empirically demonstrate a post-hoc human-machine collaboration that outperforms humans or machines alone.

Stylized 3D avatars have become increasingly prominent in our modern life. Creating these avatars manually usually involves laborious selection and adjustment of continuous and discrete parameters and is time-consuming for average users. Self-supervised approaches to automatically create 3D avatars from user selfies promise high quality with little annotation cost but fall short in application to stylized avatars due to a large style domain gap. We propose a novel self-supervised learning framework to create high-quality stylized 3D avatars with a mix of continuous and discrete parameters. Our cascaded domain bridging framework first leverages a modified portrait stylization approach to translate input selfies into stylized avatar renderings as the targets for desired 3D avatars. Next, we find the best parameters of the avatars to match the stylized avatar renderings through a differentiable imitator we train to mimic the avatar graphics engine. To ensure we can effectively optimize the discrete parameters, we adopt a cascaded relaxation-and-search pipeline. We use a human preference study to evaluate how well our method preserves user identity compared to previous work as well as manual creation. Our results achieve much higher preference scores than previous work and close to those of manual creation. We also provide an ablation study to justify the design choices in our pipeline.
