The depletion of fossil fuels and climate change pose huge challenges to sustainable development. How to meet the increasing energy demands in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner has become the focus of attention all around the world. The hybrid combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) systems that combine fuel powered CCHP systems with high energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies with zero emissions are attractive. Hence, this paper reviews various studies on such systems. Firstly, the possible integration forms of available technologies are summarized, which include combined heating and power systems, waste heat recovery systems, solar energy systems, geothermal energy systems, wind energy systems as well as energy storage systems. Secondly, the different application scenarios such as neighborhood level, district level and city level are summed up. The primary concern at the neighborhood level is whether the allocation of benefits needs to be considered. The core of the district level is how to properly decompose the district into multiple sub-districts. Research on the city level is to provide valuable guidance for the harmonious development of the city. Finally, on the basis of the above review, several perspectives that require further efforts are put forward. • The possible integration methods of available energy technologies are investigated. • The application scenarios of distributed energy systems are detailed in three levels. • Several potential perspectives are proposed based on the current studies.

Environmental and technical impacts of floating photovoltaic plants as an emerging clean energy technology

Examining the drivers of alternative energy in leading energy sustainable economies: The trilemma of energy efficiency, energy intensity and renewables expenses

In the context of increasing urbanization and climate change globally, urban energy systems (UES) planning needs adequate consideration of climate change, particularly to ensure energy supply during extreme weather events (EWE) such as heatwaves, floods, and typhoons. Here we propose a two-layer modeling framework for UES planning considering the impact of EWE. An application of the framework to a typical coastal city of Xiamen, China reveals that deploying energy storage (i.e., pumped hydro and battery) offers significant flexibility to ensure the critical demand is met during typhoon as a typical EWE and avoids over investment in supply technologies. This requires an extra 2.8% total cost on investment and operation of UES for 20 years. Planning energy systems with proper consideration of EWE can ensure robust urban energy services even with increasing penetration of fluctuating renewables, and we offer a flexible and computationally efficient paradigm for UES planning considering the impact of EWE.

Planning urban energy systems adapting to extreme weather

This article is a compilation of interdisciplinary studies aimed at ensuring the environmental, political, and economic sustainability of oil and gas-producing countries with a focus on areas with many years of permafrost. One of the main concepts adopted in this research was the desire to show that confronting various energy lobbies is not mandatory and that it is necessary to find compromises by finding and introducing innovative technologies for integrated development for the benefit of society, industry, and the state. This is particularly relevant due to the increasing share of hard-to-recover hydrocarbon reserves, widely represented in the fields of the Eastern Siberian Arctic, and because Russia is the leader in flare emissions. We thus present the relevance of using these gases as industrial waste while reducing the carbon footprint. The technology of biofuel production based on the use of supercritical liquid extraction in a well extractor is presented as a result of the development of the presented experimental devices representing the investigation of the processes of extraction in wells and reactors for the distillation of hydrocarbons from heavy oil components. The obtained yield of the desired product (hydrogen) of the thermocatalytic pyrolysis of the test extract was in the range of 44 to 118 L/h, depending on the catalyst. This information can help inform the direction of future ecological engineering activities in the Eastern Siberian Arctic region.
