4 ABSTRACT: Performance evaluation of PID controllers implemented with a clear objective to control the temperature of a ventilation system is the focal point of this paper. Mathematical models of plant (chamber) and actuator were developed. Controller design based on the models was also developed using Simulink. The models were validated through simulation using Matlab/Simulink and the Zeigler-Nichol tuning method was adopted as the tuning technique for varying the parameters of the PID controller in order to achieve a desirable transient response of the system when subjected to a unit step input. A schematic model of the system was also captured using proteus and the animated simulation was carried out to validate the system"s performance to varying temperature conditions within the chamber. After several assumptions and simulations, a set of optimal parameters was obtained that exhibited a commendable improvement in the overshoot, rise time, peak time and settling time thus improving the robustness and stability of the system.

Design, Modeling and Simulation of a Microcontroller Based Temperature Control in a Ventilation System

The thermal control of a die is crucial for the development of high efficiency injection moulds. For an effective thermal management, this research provides a strategy to identify a thermal dynamic model and to design a controller. The neural network techniques and finite element analysis enable modeling to deal with various cycle-times for moulding process and uncertain dynamics of a die. Based on the system identification which is experimentally validated using a real system, controllers are designed using fuzzy-logic and self-tuning PID methods with backpropagation and radial basis function neural networks to tune control parameters. Through a comparative study, each controller’s performance is verified in terms of response time and tracking accuracy under different moulding processes with multiple cycle-times.

As multimodal camera networks have been deployed in various environment, image fusion is playing a critical role for better visual perception and process parameter measurement The objective of the dissertation is to design robust vision-based thermal control systems to tolerate uncertainties for industrial automaton To be specific, two new methods have been proposed, one for robust shape fitting in visual images and another for packet loss recovery in thermal images Firstly, an adaptive curve fitting technique is proposed based on prediction error sum of squares for the sampled data set containing outliers The method converges very fast and can achieve superaccuracy under certain conditions when compared with other algorithms The method is applied to estimate an optimal curve equation of a casting die in the visual images Secondly, the thermal image loss generated by network traffic from camera nodes to fusion center is modeled as a Markov chain A graph cuts method is proposed to recover the loss based on thermal pattern classification Simulation results show that thermal information can be partially retrieved, which may greatly increase the robustness of a thermal management system The proposed methods are tested with a laboratory die casting process simulator with two visual cameras and one thermal camera A simple fuzzy PID controller is designed to integrate the visual sensors into a control loop The experimental results show that the homogeneity of the temperature distribution in a die may become achievable through the vision based thermal control system

Robust Vision-based Thermal Control Systems with Industrial Applications

When evaluating the performance, especially the long-term stability of high-precision scientific instruments, a local environment with substantially constant features is usually essential. A dual-chamber structured facility, together with an air-convection based dynamic thermal equilibrium servo temperature control system, was designed to fulfill such a requirement. The inner chamber is installed air-isolatedly inside an outer chamber, which can provide a constant-composition air environment for the inside instrument. Multiple temperature sensors are adopted to monitor and control the inside temperature at a constant value. One scientific instrument, which generates about 200 Watts heat dissipation during operation, has been placed into the inner chamber and continuously working for more than 30 days. The results indicate that, in case that the temperature of the outside environment is 7 °C or more lower than the expected temperature of inner chamber, such a system can provide good temperature stability better than ±0.1 °C. Moreover, because only air convection is adopted for thermal exchange, such a compact-structured system may also be utilized as an optional choice for those high-precision instruments installed in traveling vehicles.

Comprehensive Online Control Strategies for Plastic Injection Molding Process

In high-pressure die casting processes, proper control of die temperature is essential for producing superior quality components and yielding high production rates. However, die temperature distribution depends on various die design and process variables for which accurate models are normally very difficult to obtain. In this paper, a new intelligent control scheme is proposed for die thermal management. In this scheme, extra cooling water lines controlled by a pump and solenoid valves are attached to each established cooling channel. A fuzzy PID controller is designed to minimize the temperature differences between channels. Some implementation issues such as latency have been discussed. The experimental results obtained from a laboratory die casting process simulator indicate that the developed control system is capable of adjusting the desired supply of cooling water into multiple cooling lines so that the local temperature distribution of the die insert may become more homogeneous.
