Advances of magnetic nanohydrometallurgy using superparamagnetic nanomaterials as rare earth ions adsorbents: A grand opportunity for sustainable rare earth recovery

The need for an effective and efficient removal method for the combined pollution of antibiotics and heavy metals has attracted increasing attention. In this study, a novel manganese ferrite-loaded swine manure hydrochar was utilized to deal with chlortetracycline and lead in water. The SMHC was produced via the hydrothermal carbonization method and then modified with manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) nanoparticles using the coprecipitation method. The hybrid adsorbent (MnFe2O4-SMHC) exhibited high specific surface area, abundant functional groups, and excellent magnetic properties. The CTC adsorption data were fitted to both the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models, while that of Cd(II) was better fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum removal capacities corresponding to CTC and Cd(II) adsorptions were 752.96 and 62. 16 mg g−1, respectively. The removal of CTC was slightly promoted in the presence of low concentrations of Cd(II), while the presence of CTC showed antagonistic effects on the uptake of Cd(II). The spent MnFe2O4-SMHC was collected after adsorption using an external magnetic field for subsequent regeneration and reuse, and the result showed its excellent recyclability. In summary, MnFe2O4-SMHC exhibited excellent adsorption performance for CTC and Cd(II) removal in single and binary conditions, suggesting its potential application in water and wastewater remediation.

Future energy systems must call upon clean and renewable sources capable of reducing associated CO2 emissions. The present research opens new perspectives for renewable energy-based hydrogen production by water splitting using metal oxide oxidation/reduction reactants. An earlier multicriteria assessment defined top priorities, with MnFe2O4/Na2CO3/H2O and Mn3O4/MnO/NaMnO2/H2O multistep redox cycles having the highest potential. The latter redox system was previously assessed and proven difficult to be conducted. The former redox system was hence experimentally investigated in the present research at the 0.5 to 250 g scale in isothermal thermogravimetry, an electrically heated furnace, and a concentrated solar reactor. Over 30 successive oxidation/reduction cycles were assessed, and the H2 production efficiencies exceeded 98 % for the coprecipitated reactant after these multiple cycles. Tentative economics using a coprecipitated reactant revealed that 120 cycles are needed to achieve a 1 € per kg H2 cost. Improving the cheaper ball-milled reactant could reduce costs by approximately 30 %. The initial results confirm that future research is important.

Removal of rare earth elements by MnFe2O4 based mesoporous adsorbents: Synthesis, isotherms, kinetics, thermodynamics

Through coating the magnetic nano-MnFe2O4 onto the surface of Al2O3, a kind of magnetic composite of nano-MnFe2O4/Al2O3 adsorbent was synthesized successfully and used for the copper ions removal from simulated wastewater. The composite was characterised using a vibrating sample magnetometer, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and a Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis. At the same time, the response surface method was used to optimize the reaction parameters. Moreover, the studies of adsorption isotherms and kinetics indicated that the Cu2+ adsorption process may be a multilayer chemical adsorption. It was worth noting that the increased concentration of F– favored the Cu2+ adsorption. Under the optimum conditions, when the initial concentration of Cu2+ was 20 mg/L and the adsorbent dosage was 0.20 g, the removal rate was 98.2%. In addition, after five cycles, the removal rate dropped only from 98.2% to 85.7%. This prepared magnetic adsorbent possessed excellent adsorption property and the characteristics of great reusability with quick solid-liquid separation from aqueous solution under external magnetic field added, which indicated its potential practical application for the Cu2+ removal from wastewater.
