Recent progress on hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of light metals and hydrides

Abstract An investigation on the hydrogen generation by reacting ball-milled Mg-based materials in different alcoholic solutions (methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol) was performed. The MgH2 reactivity in methanol is very low (maximum conversion yield 10 % ) and no improvement is induced by the ball milling treatment. In contrast, the ball milling affects greatly the Mg reactivity in methanol. The Mg powder milled for 30 min displays a maximum conversion yield of 47% compared to 3% for unmilled Mg powder. Its high reactivity is ascribed to the creation of numerous defects and fresh surfaces during the initial stage of the milling process, favoring the corrosion of Mg in methanol. In addition, the presence of water in the methanol solution inhibits drastically the alcoholysis reaction despite its low amount (0.3 vol%). The higher hydrogen production is obtained with the composite Mg-10 at% Ni milled for 30 min leading to a conversion yield of 70% after 45 min of reaction in methanol, which corresponds to a hydrogen gravimetric yield of 4.5 wt% (including Ni mass and excluding methanol mass). The positive effect of Ni addition on the yield and kinetics of the alcoholysis reaction is explained by the creation of micro-galvanic cells between Mg and Ni components. No hydrogen is released from the decomposition of milled Mg powder in ethanol and 2-propanol solutions.

The invention discloses a hydrogen production and storage integrated apparatus, which belongs to the technical field of the preparation of hydrogen The hydrogen production and storage integrated apparatus comprises a liquid storage chamber, a reaction chamber and a gas storage chamber; the bottom of the liquid storage chamber is communicated with the bottom of the reaction chamber, and the top ofthe reaction chamber is communicated with the top of the gas storage chamber by virtue of a connecting apparatus; the middle part of the reaction chamber is provided with a loading apparatus; the connecting apparatus comprises a gas pipe communicating the reaction chamber and the gas storage chamber, and the junction of the gas pipe and the reaction chamber is provided with a waterproof permeablemembrane; and the gas pipe is successively provided with a cutoff valve and a pressure sensor along the direction from the reaction chamber to the gas storage chamber, and the cutoff valve is communicated with the pressure sensor By virtue of the integrated design of a hydrogen production device and a hydrogen storage device and by virtue of the connecting apparatus between the reaction chamberand the gas storage chamber, the yield of the hydrogen can be automatically controlled in real time, the gas pressure in the apparatus can be controlled not to be excessively high, the risk is reduced, and the stable hydrogen can be supplied to an FC power supply of a portable device
