Poultry enterprise development in Nigeria is affected by high cost of feeds and feed ingredients, outbreak of diseases,
constrained smallholder access to inputs, climate change and marketing. This study examined the determinants of poultry
farmers’ willingness to participate in National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) in Oyo State, Nigeria. Primary data
were collected from 136 respondents with the aid of structured questionnaire using multi-stage sampling techniques. Data
were analyzed with descriptive statistics and Probit regression model. Results showed that the mean age of the respondents
was 43.6 years while the majority of them (65.44%) were males and had tertiary education (58.8%). Mean years of
experience in poultry farming stood at 13.5, while the mean value of stock of birds held was ₦1,984,660.61. The majorities
of the farmers (60.29%) belong to at least one association, had access to credit (60.29%) and were not aware of NAIS
(70.58%). Willingness to participate in the scheme increased significantly with experience in poultry enterprise (0.9828),
awareness status (1.0031), access to credit (0.0018), and value of stock held (5.48e-07), but decreased with membership of
association (0.1113). It was recommended that more awareness about the scheme should be created. Also, credit facilities
should be made available to farmers at affordable rate.

Determinants of Poultry Farmers’ Willingness to Participate in NationalAgricultural Insurance Scheme in Oyo State, Nigeria

Farmer Field School (FFS) is a capacity building approach in the Agricultural Extension Approaches (AEA), which provides opportunities to farmers of improving various skills through practicing various techniques by themselves. The review paper is in 2015 to analyze FFS as a strategy for benefiting resource poor farmers from agricultural technologies in Pakistan. Keeping in view the importance of exchange of information, FFS approach is the only approach to agriculture extension in which communication is an integral component because after trained by FFS program and to be expected to become a local agent to deliver the information and techniques of agriculture to other farmers for enhancing the agricultural production, income and improved livelihood. It can be concluded from the study that FFS proves highly beneficial to the farming community due to its capacity building functions.

An Analysis of the Effectiveness Farmer Field School (FFS) Approach in Sustainable Rural Livelihood (SRL): The Experience of Punjab-Pakistan

Agricultural Extension services are among the most important rural services in developing countries. The services are considered to be a key driver of technological change and productivity growth in agriculture. In Kenya, like in the rest of the developing economies, agricultural extension has largely been delivered through supply–driven approaches. Due to perceived low impact of agricultural extension, the country is implementing the National Extension Policy (NEP) which advocates for demand–driven extension and participation of other players. Using the case of the smallholder tea sub-sector, this paper examines the effects the FFS extension on tea crop yields in Kenya. The FFS system uses participatory approaches including the demonstration of best sustainable practices in the farms and farmers learn by doing. Data for the study was collected from a sample of 525 farm households in Western Kenya using a multi stage random sampling procedure and analyzed using the propensity score matching (PSM) model which controls for self-selection endogeneity. The results show that participation in FFS extension increases annual tea yields by an average of 471.70 kgs per acre (p = 0.009) while the farmer–funded train and visit system has no influence on crop yields. A part from showing the contribution of FFS to crop yields, the paper demonstrates that the supply–driven extension models including T&V are necessary to stimulate demand in the initial stages of implementing the FFS models. Based on the findings, investments to enhance FFS access among smallholder farmers are recommended.

Farmers field schools (FFSs) provide farmers with an opportunity to experiment new technologies which help them to make informed decisions that eventually lead to increased agricultural production and productivity. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of Farmer Field Schools (FFS) in terms of improving agricultural productivity in selected villages of Mvomero District, Morogoro region. Effectiveness was conceptualized as the performance of FFS graduates meeting the goal in terms of acquisition and utilization of improved rice production technologies, knowledge and/or practices resulting in increased production and productivity of rice. The specific objectives were to describe the socio-economic characteristics of smallholder FFS and non-FFS graduates on improved rice technologies; to describe the extent of utilization of acquired improved rice technologies, knowledge and/or practices between FFS and nonFFS graduates; to compare the levels of rice yields per hectare between FFS and non-FFS graduates; and to assess the perceptions of smallholder rice farmers on the effectiveness of FFS in terms of acquisition and utilization of improved rice technologies; and improved rice productivity. A cross-sectional research survey method was used and involved interviewing 120 respondents (FFS and NFFS graduate) selected through a multi-stage sampling technique. A sample of 60 FFS and 60 NFFS graduates was proportionately selected for the study. Structured questionnaires were used to collect primary data; and secondary data were collected from relevant reports and documents. Frequencies were run using The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 to determine socioeconomic characteristics of smallholder farmers. Additionally, independent t-test was used to test the mean difference of the two groups (FFS graduates and NFFS farmers) on crop yields. 3 Abstract: This study was conducted in two major rice growing districts of Pakistan to make a comparison between the two approaches; Farmer Field School (FFS) and Training & Visit (T&V) approach of Agricultural Extension for dissemination of advance agriculture technologies. A survey was conducted by using well structured questionnaire and data was collected from one hundred farmers who were involved in cultivation of rice crop and were registered at farmers' field schools with a past experience of T&V approach of agricultural extension. The study was based on the features identified by Ajaya and Okafar which must be possessed by any effective agricultural extension system. The opinion of farmers based on comparison of both extension systems was taken and analyzed using descriptive statistical tools and t-test of inferential statistics. All of the respondents rated FFS higher than T&V approach of agricultural extension i.e. mean value for FFS approach ranged from 3.92 to 4.90 as compared to T&V mean value ranging from 1.28 to 1.88. The results of t-test analysis showed that there existed significant difference between FFS and T&V approach of agricultural extension (t= 116.88, p< 0.01) as perceived by the rice growers in the study area. From the results it was found that FFS approach was perceived more effective and participatory by rice farmers in Pakistan. Therefore, it is suggested that the farmer field school approach should be opted on priority for boosting dissemination of latest agriculture techniques for the uplift of average crop yields and well-being of farming community.
