Due to the acceleration of urbanization and industrialization, air pollutants has been increasing, posing a major threat to human health and the ecological environment. During the past period of rapid growth, with the booming development of real estate, the air pollutants brought about by the construction of housing buildings have become more and more serious, especially sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and dust, which cast a great threat to human life and seriously jeopardize human health. Compared with the traditional construction of houses, prefabricated buildings construction procedures are reduced, to some extent, can reduce air pollutants. Therefore, this paper takes an empirical perspective to include prefabricated buildings and air pollutants into the same research framework and analyze the inherent logical relationship. We found that prefabricated buildings have a substantial role in mitigating urban air pollution. This conclusion remained solid after various robustness tests including constructing instrumental variables. The effect is observed to be greater in cities above the non-sub-provincial level and those positioned within central regions. The conclusions explore new areas for the green and sustainable development of the construction industry, which in the future will have to fill the requirements of green development in order to survive. Else, perspectives from the construction industry, it provides a realistic solution to economic development and ecological protection, helping to alleviate or resolve the conflict between development and survival. 

Assessing the air pollution abatement effect of prefabricated buildings in China.

Steel slag is the waste slag generated after steel smelting, which has cementitious activity. However, untreated steel slag can damage the integrity of steel slag concrete due to its harmful expansion. This study prepared porous aggregates by mixing powdered steel slag, fly ash, and cement and carbonated them with CO2 under high pressure conditions (0.2 MPa). The effect of carbonation on the performance of steel slag aggregate was studied using volume stability and crushing value. The effect of different carbonation conditions on the products was studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric (TG) analyses, and the carbon sequestration efficiency of steel slag under different treatment methods was quantitatively evaluated. The research results indicate that untreated steel slag was almost completely destroyed and lost its strength after autoclave curing. With the increase in temperature and carbonation time, the performance of steel slag aggregate gradually improved and the pulverization rate, expansion rate, and crushing value gradually decreased. According to the experimental results of XRD and TG, it was found that the reaction between f-CaO (free CaO) and CO2 in steel slag generated CaCO3, filling the pores inside the aggregate, which was the internal reason for the improvement of aggregate performance. After comparison, the best carbonation method was maintained at 55 °C for 72 h. After carbonation, the steel slag aggregate had a pulverization rate of 2.4%, an expansion rate of 0.23%, a crushing value of 23%, and a carbon sequestration efficiency of 11.27% per unit weight of aggregate.

Effect of Carbonation Treatment on the Properties of Steel Slag Aggregate.

The spatiotemporal characteristics, relationship with meteorological factors, and source distribution of air pollutants (January 2017-December 2021) were analyzed to better understand the air pollutants on the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains (NSTM) in Xinjiang, a heavily polluted urban agglomeration of heavy industries. The results showed that the annual mean concentrations of SO2, NO2, CO, O3, PM2.5, and PM10 were 8.61-13.76 μg m-3, 26.53-36.06 μg m-3, 0.79-1.31 mg m-3, 82.24-87.62 μg m-3, 37.98-51.10 μg m-3, and 84.15-97.47 μg m-3. The concentrations of air pollutants (except O3) showed a decreasing trend. The highest concentrations were in winter, and in Wujiaqu, Shihezi, Changji, Urumqi, and Turpan, the concentrations of particulate matter exceeded the NAAQS Grade II during winter. The west wind and the spread of local pollutants both substantially impacted the high concentrations. According to the analysis of the backward trajectory in winter, the air masses were mainly from eastern Kazakhstan and local emission sources, and PM10 in the airflow had a more significant impact on Turpan; the rest of the cities were more affected by PM2.5. Potential sources included Urumqi-Changj-Shihezi, Turpan, the northern Bayingol Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, and eastern Kazakhstan. Consequently, the emphasis on improving air quality should be on reducing local emissions, strengthening regional cooperation, and researching transboundary transport of air pollutants.

Air pollution in heavy industrial cities along the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains, Xinjiang: characteristics, meteorological influence, and sources

Rainwater is one of the most important parts of water resources and aerosols. The content of chemical elements in rainwater influences air quality significantly. It is extremely important for high-quality sustainable agriculture development and the cultivation of China’s natural landscape to understand and control the sources, transport, and removal of chemical elements in rainwater. Currently, there are some reports on the sources and removal of chemical elements in rainwater; however, these papers do not completely and clearly explain where the chemical elements in the rainwater originate and how they are transported and removed. A review of published literature related to chemical elements in rainwater shows that industrialization and urbanization increase the levels of atmospheric pollutants and trace elements in rainwater, contaminating soil and surface water as well as other natural resources. The Chinese government established a series of sponge cities, rainwater wetlands, rainwater gardens, and biological detention pools to improve the quality of sewage so as to realize the reuse of water resources, the sustainable development of high-quality agriculture, and the cultivation of China’s natural landscape.

The Source, Transport, and Removal of Chemical Elements in Rainwater in China

Unveiling Pollutants in Sonipat District, Haryana: Exploring Seasonal, Spatial and Meteorological Patterns

Based on low-level atmospheric meteorological elemental and pollutant data in the vertical direction observed during a tethered sonde sounding experiment from December 27, 2019 to January 14, 2020 this study analysed the atmospheric boundary layer vertical structure and its influence on winter PM2.5 concentrations in Shihezi City, Xinjiang, using Richardson number (Ri) profiling and correlation analysis to better understand the correlation between the atmospheric boundary layer structure and continuous heavy pollution in Shihezi City during winter. The results showed that heavy pollution continued during the observational period, and the diurnal variation in the atmospheric boundary layer disappeared. The atmospheric boundary layer structure tended to remain stable, and the average boundary layer height was only 109 m. The lengthy temperature inversion lifespan, high humidity, and low-wind layer near the surface primarily contributed to the sustained heavy pollution during winter in Shihezi City. Temperature and wind speed during heavy pollution events were negatively correlated with the PM2.5 concentrations in the near-surface layer. Stable atmospheric thermodynamic stratification with a cold lower layer and a warm upper layer in the atmospheric boundary layer weakens vertical atmospheric pollutant diffusion. Moreover, increased relative humidity (RH) is beneficial for hygroscopic aerosol particle growth and liquid-phase chemical reactions, thus worsening heavy pollution.

Evolution of Meteorological Conditions during a Heavy Air Pollution Event under the Influence of Shallow Foehn in Urumqi, China

This work presents the results of a ten-year investigation (2010–2019) on the characteristics and sources of precipitation pollution in typical cities locating in the economic belt on the North Slope of Tianshan Mountain, Xinjiang. The water-soluble ions’ characteristics (Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, F−, Cl−, SO42−, NO3−), neutralizing capacity, wet deposition and sources of precipitation in Urumqi, Karamay and Yining during 2010–2019 were compared and analyzed. The study showed that from 2010 to 2019, the pH value of precipitation in Urumqi, Karamay and Yining varied from 4.18 to 10.55 with a volume-weighted mean (VWM) pH of 6.33, and the pH value showed an upward trend overall. The VWM electrical conductivity (EC) of the precipitation was the highest in Urumqi and the lowest in Yining, indicating that Urumqi was the most polluted and Yining was relatively clean. The most important cation in the precipitation of the three cities was Ca2+, and the most important anion was SO42−. The ratio of SO42−/NO3− indicated that the air pollution in Urumqi and Yining belonged to the typical coal-smoke air pollution, while there was compound pollution in Karamay. As can be seen from the neutralization factor, Ca2+ had the strongest neutralization ability, followed by Na+ and NH4+. Nitrate and sulfate in the atmosphere of Urumqi, Karamay and Yining are likely to exist in the form of NH4NO3, CaSO4 and (NH4)2SO4•CaSO4•2H2O. Wet deposition flux analysis of S and N showed that S pollution of the precipitation in Urumqi showed a decreasing trend, while N pollution showed an increasing trend. S pollution of the precipitation in Karamay gradually decreased, while N pollution of the precipitation in Yining became more and more serious. By analyzing origins of major ions in precipitation, it is concluded that human activities (industry, agriculture, heating, and transportation) are the main sources of ions in precipitation, and natural sources (soil dust) also play an important role.

Chemical Composition Characteristics and Source Contributions of Precipitation in Typical Cities on the North Slope of Tianshan Mountain in Xinjiang during 2010–2019

Background characteristics and influence analysis of greenhouse gases at Akedala regional background station in Northern Xinjiang

This paper investigates the temporal−spatial characteristics of column NO2 concentration and influence factors in Xinjiang based on the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) aboard the EU/ESA Sentinel−5 Precursor satellite. The findings indicate that there is a high linear correlation between TROPOMI NO2 data and ground-based data, with Yining having the highest correlation (R2 = 0.8132) and Aksu having the lowest correlation (R2 = 0.7307). The TROPOMI NO2 data can be used to approximate the characteristics of near−surface atmospheric NO2 concentration. NO2 VCD in the troposphere varies greatly geographically, with a noticeable ‘island’ pattern. The high−value zones are mostly found on the northern slope of Tianshan Mountain, in the capital cities of several prefectures, and occasionally in the industrial parks. Urumqi has the highest annual average NO2 VCD of 553.9 × 10−6 mol·m−2. The NO2 VCD is characterized by seasonal shifts and cyclical swings of “low in spring, high in winter, and transition in summer and autumn”. The monthly mean value is highest in December (27.14 × 10−6 mol m−2) and lowest in March (12.66 × 10−6 mol m−2). Meteorological factors can influence the temporal and spatial distribution of NO2 VCD. The GRA in Urumqi is 0.774 between the monthly mean of NO2 VCD and relative humidity. The main causes of the increase in NO2 VCD are man-made emissions. The annual GDP of the secondary industry and its annual average NO2 VCD in fifteen key cities in Xinjiang have a correlation coefficient of 0.78. TROPOMI NO2 data can provide strong support for the fine control of air pollution and air quality in early warning forecast in Xinjiang.
