Plastic is now considered part and parcel of daily life due to its extensive usage. Microplastic pollution is becoming a growing worry and has been ranked as the second most critical scientific problem in the realm of ecology and the environment. Microplastics are smaller in size than plastic and are more harmful to biotic and as well as abiotic environments. The toxicity of microplastic depends upon its shape and size and increases with an increase in its adsorption capacity and their toxicity. The reason behind their harmful nature is their small size and their large surface area-to-volume ratio. Microplastic can get inside fruits, vegetables, seeds, roots, culms, and leaves. Hence microplastic enters into the food chain. There are different entry points for microplastic to enter into the food chain. Such sources can include polluted food, beverages, spices, plastic toys, and household (packing, cooking, etc.). The concentration of microplastic in terrestrial environments is increasing day by day. Microplastic causes the destruction of soil structure; destroys soil microbiota, cause depletion of nutrients in the soil, and their absorption by plants hence decreasing plant growth Apart from other environmental problems caused by microplastic, human health is also badly affected by microplastic pollution present in the terrestrial environment. The presence of microplastics in the human body has been confirmed. Microplastic enters into the body of humans in different possible ways. According to their way of entering the body, microplastics cause different diseases in humans. MPs also cause negative effects on the human endocrine system. At the ecosystem level, the impacts of microplastic are interconnected and can disrupt ecological processes. Although recently different papers have been published on several aspects of the microplastic present in the terrestrial environment but there is no complete overview that focus on the interrelationship of MPs in plants, and soil and their effect on higher animals like a human. This review provides a completely detailed overview of existing knowledge about sources, occurrences, transport, and effects of microplastic on the food chain and soil quality and their ecotoxicological effects on plants and humans. 

Toxicity assessment of microplastic (MPs); a threat to the ecosystem.

Microplastic (MP) pollution is becoming a global problem due to the resilience, long-term persistence, and robustness of MPs in different ecosystems. In terrestrial ecosystems, plants are exposed to MP stress, thereby affecting overall plant growth and development. This review article has critically analyzed the effects of MP stress in plants. We found that MP stress-induced reduction in plant physical growth is accompanied by two complementary effects: (i) blockage of pores in seed coat or roots to alter water and nutrient uptake, and (ii) induction of drought due to increased soil cracking effects of MPs. Nonetheless, the reduction in physiological growth under MP stress is accompanied by four complementary effects: (i) excessive production of ROS, (ii) alteration in leaf and root ionome, (iii) impaired hormonal regulation, and (iv) decline in chlorophyll and photosynthesis. Considering that, we suggested that targeting the redox regulatory mechanisms could be beneficial in improving tolerance to MPs in plants; however, antioxidant activities are highly dependent on plant species, plant tissue, MP type, and MP dose. MP stress also indirectly reduces plant growth by altering soil productivity. However, MP-induced negative effects vary due to the presence of different surface functional groups and particle sizes. In the end, we suggested the utilization of agronomic approaches, including the application of growth regulators, biochar, and replacing plastic mulch with crop residues, crop diversification, and biological degradation, to ameliorate the effects of MP stress in plants. The efficiency of these methods is also MP-type-specific and dose-dependent.

Microplastics in aquatic environments: A comprehensive review of toxicity, removal, and remediation strategies.

ABSTRACT Microplastics (MPs) are contaminants widely distributed in the environment and biota. Previously, most studies focused on identifying and characterizing microplastics in the marine environment, while their impact on freshwater ecosystems remains to be determined. This review summarizes recent findings regarding MPs physiological, immunological, and genetic effects on amphibians based upon the biological relevance of this species as indicators of freshwater pollution. Data demonstrated that MPs contamination may potentially alter various physiological processes in aquatic animals, mainly in the embryonic stages. It is worthwhile noting that adverse effects might be enhanced in synergy with other pollutants. However, amphibians might counteract the effect of MPs and other pollutants through microbiota present both in the intestine and on the skin. In addition, amphibian microbial composition might also be altered by MPs themselves in a manner that leads to unpredicted health consequences in amphibians.

Ecotoxicological perspectives of microplastic pollution in amphibians

Abstract Microplastics have been noticed as widespread in an aquatic environment at the microscale. They have nonstop increased due to the increase in the production of synthetic plastics, population and poor waste management. They are ubiquitous in nature and slowly degrade in water and soil. They are emerging pollutants that have received interest from public audiences and research communities. They have great stability and can adsorb various other pollutants like pesticides, heavy metals, etc. After entering the freshwater environment, microplastics can be stored in the tissue of organisms and stay for a long time. They can generate a serious threat to freshwater ecosystems and can cause physical damage to organisms. Visual identification, Raman spectroscopy, pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Pyro–GC–MS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and combined methods are the commonly known methods for the quantification and identification of microplastics. The detected concentration of microplastics depends on the sampling method, locations and identification techniques. The authors assessed the sources, transport, impacts, identification and characterization, and treatment of microplastics in freshwater environments in detail. The authors are also giving some recommendations for the minimization of the MPs from the freshwater environment. This review article will provide the baseline facts for the investigators to do more research on microplastic pollution in the future. Graphical Abstract

Microplastic pollution and its impact on the ecological environment have attracted worldwide attention. The strong adsorption capacity of the microplastic surface plays an important role in the migration of microplastics throughout the environment. Synergistic effects between microplastics and persistent organic pollutants increase the toxicity of pollutants to organisms. In addition, microplastics cause different degrees of harm to aquatic organisms with different nutritional levels. However, the toxic effects of microplastics and organic pollutants on organisms, the distribution of microplastics in higher aquatic organisms, and the nutrient transfer in complex aquatic food webs require further research. Therefore, studying the impact of microplastics on the ecological environment would provide insights into controlling microplastic pollution. This paper in-depth discusses the source, distribution, and transmission of microplastics and summarizes the current situation of the impact of microplastics on the ecological environment, including physical, chemical, and biological effects. This paper also suggests topics for further research on the influence of microplastics on various aspects of the ecological environment.
