Thermal C-C bond cleavage reactions allow the construction of structurally diverse molecular skeletons via predictable and efficient bond reorganizations. Visible light photoredox-catalyzed radical-mediated C-C bond cleavage reactions have recently emerged as a powerful alternative method for overcoming the thermodynamic and kinetic barrier of C-C bond cleavage in diverse molecular scaffolds. In recent years, a plethora of elegant and useful reactions have been invented, and the products are sometimes otherwise inaccessible by classic thermal reactions. Considering the great influence and synthetic potential of these reactions, we provide a summary of the state of art visible light-driven radical-mediated C-C bond cleavage/functionalization strategies with a specific emphasis on the working models. We hoped that this review will be useful for medicinal and synthetic organic chemists and will inspire further reaction development in this interesting area.

Visible Light-Driven Radical-Mediated C-C Bond Cleavage/Functionalization in Organic Synthesis

Visible-light-induced radical decarboxylative functionalization of carboxylic acids and their derivatives has recently received considerable attention as a novel and efficient method to create CC and CX bonds. Generally, this visible-light-promoted decarboxylation process can smoothly occur under mild reaction conditions with a broad range of substrates and an excellent functional-group tolerance. The radical species formed from the decarboxylation step can participate in not only single photocatalytic transformations, but also dual-catalytic cross-coupling reactions by combining photoredox catalysis with other catalytic processes. Recent advances in this research area are discussed herein.

ConspectusVisible-light photocatalysis has recently received increasing attention from chemists because of its wide application in organic synthesis and its significance for sustainable chemistry. This catalytic strategy enables the generation of various reactive species, frequently without stoichiometric activation reagents under mild reaction conditions. Manipulation of these reactive intermediates can result in numerous synthetically useful bond formations in a controllable manner.In this Account, we describe our recent advances in the rational design and strategic application of photocatalysis in the synthesis of various synthetically and biologically important heterocycles. Exploration of Visible-Light Photocatalysis in Heterocycle Synthesis and Functionalization: Reaction Design and Beyond.

In recent years, visible light-driven organic photochemical synthesis has attracted wide research interest from academic and industrial communities due to its features of green and sustainable chemistry. In this flourishing area, Chinese chemists have devoted great efforts to different aspects of synthetic chemistry. This review will summarize their representative work according to the following categories: C–H functionalization, synthesis of aromatic aza-heterocycles, asymmetric organic photochemical synthesis, transformations of small molecules and biomolecule-compatible reactions.

Decarboxylative reactions with and without light – a comparison

Visible-light-induced photocatalytic decarboxylative alkynylations of carboxylic acids have been developed for the first time. The reaction features extremely mild conditions, broad substrate scope, and avoids additional oxidants. Importantly, a decarboxylative carbonylative alkynylation has also been carried out in the presence of carbon monoxide (CO) under photocatalytic conditions, which affords valuable ynones in high yields at room temperature.
