Planning algorithms are impacting technical disciplines and industries around the world, including robotics, computer-aided design, manufacturing, computer graphics, aerospace applications, drug design, and protein folding. This coherent and comprehensive book unifies material from several sources, including robotics, control theory, artificial intelligence, and algorithms. The treatment is centered on robot motion planning but integrates material on planning in discrete spaces. A major part of the book is devoted to planning under uncertainty, including decision theory, Markov decision processes, and information spaces, which are the “configuration spaces” of all sensor-based planning problems. The last part of the book delves into planning under differential constraints that arise when automating the motions of virtually any mechanical system. Developed from courses taught by the author, the book is intended for students, engineers, and researchers in robotics, artificial intelligence, and control theory as well as computer graphics, algorithms, and computational biology.

An autonomous mobile robot with a 3D laser range finder for 3D exploration and digitalization of indoor environments

In this paper, we investigate safe and efficient map-building strategies for a mobile robot with imperfect control and sensing. In the implementation, a robot equipped with a range sensor builds apolygonal map layout of a previously unknown indoor environment. The robot explores the environment and builds the map concurrently by patching together the local models acquired by the sensor into a global map. A well-studied and related problem is the simultaneous localization and mapping SLAM problem, where the goal is to integrate the information collected during navigation into the most accurate map possible. However, SLAM does not address the sensor-placement portion of the map-building task. That is, given the map built so far, where should the robot go next? This is the main question addressed in this paper. Concretely, an algorithm is proposed to guide the robot through a series of ?good? positions, where ?good? refers to the expected amount and quality of the information that will be revealed at each new location. This is similar to the next-best-view NBV problem studied in computer vision and graphics. However, in mobile robotics the problem is complicated by several issues, two of which are particularly crucial. One is to achieve safe navigation despite an incomplete knowledge of the environment and sensor limitations e.g., in range and incidence. The other issue is the need to ensure sufficient overlap between each new local model and the current map, in order to allow registration of successive views under positioning uncertainties inherent to mobile robots. To address both issues in a coherent framework, in this paper we introduce the concept of a safe region, defined as the largest region that is guaranteed to be free of obstacles given the sensor readings made so far. The construction of a safe region takes sensor limitations into account. In this paper we also describe an NBV algorithm that uses the safe-region concept to select the next robot position at each step. The new position is chosen within the safe region in order to maximize the expected gain of information under the constraint that the local model at this new position must have a minimal overlap with the current global map. In the future, NBV and SLAM algorithms should reinforce each other. While a SLAM algorithm builds a map by making the best use of the available sensory data, an NBV algorithm, such as that proposed here, guides the navigation of the robot through positions selected to provide the best sensory inputs.

Navigation Strategies for Exploring Indoor Environments

Laser scanning range sensors are widely used for high-precision, high-density three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and inspection of the surface of physical objects. The process typically involves planning a set of views, physically altering the relative object-sensor pose, taking scans, registering the acquired geometric data in a common coordinate frame of reference, and finally integrating range images into a nonredundant model. Efficiencies could be achieved by automating or semiautomating this process. While challenges remain, there are adequate solutions to semiautomate the scan-register-integrate tasks. On the other hand, view planning remains an open problem---that is, the task of finding a suitably small set of sensor poses and configurations for specified reconstruction or inspection goals. This paper surveys and compares view planning techniques for automated 3D object reconstruction and inspection by means of active, triangulation-based range sensors.

View planning for automated three-dimensional object reconstruction and inspection

A solution to the "next best view" (NBV) problem for automated surface acquisition is presented. The NBV problem is to determine which areas of a scanner's viewing volume need to be scanned to sample all of the visible surfaces of an a priori unknown object and where to position/control the scanner to sample them. A method for determining the unscanned areas of the viewing volume is presented. In addition, a novel representation, positional space, is presented which facilitates a solution to the NBV problem by representing what must be and what can be scanned in a single data structure. The number of costly computations needed to determine if an area of the viewing volume would be occluded from some scanning position is decoupled from the number of positions considered for the NBV, thus reducing the computational cost of choosing one. An automated surface acquisition systems designed to scan all visible surfaces of an a priori unknown object is demonstrated on real objects.

A solution to the next best view problem for automated surface acquisition

The primary focus of the research detailed in this paper is to develop an intelligent sensing module capable of automatically determining the optimal next sensor position and orientation during scene reconstruction. To facilitate a solution to this problem, we have assembled a system for reconstructing a 3D model of an object or scene from a sequence of range images. Candidates for the best-next-view position are determined by detecting and measuring occlusions to the range camera's view in an image. Ultimately, the candidate which will reveal the greatest amount of unknown scene information is selected as the best-next-view position. Our algorithm uses ray tracing to determine how much new information a given sensor perspective will reveal. We have tested our algorithm successfully on several synthetic range data streams, and found the system's results to be consistent with an intuitive human search. The models recovered by our system from range data compared well with the ideal models. Essentially, we have proven that range information of physical objects can be employed to automatically reconstruct a satisfactory dynamic 3D computer model at a minimal computational expense. This has obvious implications in the contexts of robot navigation, manufacturing, and hazardous materials handling.
