Due to their excellent mechanical properties, the carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs) of thermoplastic resins are widely used, and an accurate constitutive model plays a pivotal role in structural design and service safety. A two-parameter three-dimensional (3D) plastic potential was obtained by considering both the deviatoric deformation and the dilatation deformation associated with hydrostatic stress. The Langmuir function was first adopted to model the plastic hardening behavior of composites. The two-parameter 3D plastic potential, connected to the Langmuir function of plastic hardening, was thus proposed to model the constitutive behavior of the CFRPs of thermoplastic resins. Also, T700/PEEK specimens with different off-axis angles were subjected to tensile loading to obtain the corresponding fracture surface angles of specimens and the load–displacement curves. The two unknown plastic parameters in the proposed 3D plastic potential were obtained by using the quasi-Newton algorithm programmed in MATLAB, and the unknown hardening parameters in the Langmuir function were determined by fitting the effective stress-plastic strain curve in different off-axis angles. Meanwhile, the user material subroutine VUMAT, following the proposed constitutive model, was developed in terms of the maximum stress criterion for fiber failure and the LaRC05 criterion for matrix failure to simulate the 3D elastoplastic damage behavior of T700/PEEK. Finally, comparisons between the experimental tests and the numerical analysis were made, and a fairly good agreement was found, which validated the correctness of the proposed constitutive model in this work. 

A 3D Elastoplastic Constitutive Model Considering Progressive Damage Behavior for Thermoplastic Composites of T700/PEEK

Chemokine receptors comprise a large family of seven transmembrane domain G protein-coupled receptors differentially expressed in diverse cell types. Biological activities have been most clearly defined in leukocytes, where chemokines coordinate development, differentiation, anatomic distribution, trafficking, and effector functions and thereby regulate innate and adaptive immune responses. Pharmacological analysis of chemokine receptors is at an early stage of development. Disease indications have been established in human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome and in Plasmodium vivax malaria, due to exploitation of CCR5 and Duffy, respectively, by the pathogen for cell entry. Additional indications are emerging among inflammatory and immunologically mediated diseases, but selection of targets in this area still remains somewhat speculative. Small molecule antagonists with nanomolar affinity have been reported for 7 of the 18 known chemokine receptors but have not yet been studied in clinical trials. Virally encoded chemokine receptors, as well as chemokine agonists and antagonists, and chemokine scavengers have been identified in medically important poxviruses and herpesviruses, again underscoring the importance of the chemokine system in microbial pathogenesis and possibly identifying specific strategies for modulating chemokine action therapeutically. The purpose of this review is to update current concepts of the biology and pharmacology of the chemokine system, to summarize key information about each chemokine receptor, and to describe a widely accepted receptor nomenclature system, ratified by the International Union of Pharmacology, that is facilitating clear communication in this area.

The stacking configuration of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, achieved via the filament winding process, exhibits distinct variations compared to conventional FRP composite stacking arrangements. Consequently, it becomes challenging to ascertain the influence of mechanical properties based on the typical stacking structures. Thus, it becomes imperative to enhance the mechanical behavior and optimize the interleaved structures to improve overall performance. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of incorporating amorphous halloysite nanotubes (A-HNTs) within different layers of five unique layer arrangements on the low-velocity impact properties of interleaved carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) structures. The low-velocity impact characteristics of the laminate were validated using a drop weight impact test, wherein the resulting impact damage modes and extent of damage were compared and evaluated under microscopic analysis. Each interleaved structure laminate according to whether nanoparticles are added was compared at impact energies of 10 J and 15 J. In the case of 10 J, the absorption energy showed a similar tendency in each structure. However, at 15 J, the absorption energy varies from structure to structure. Among them, a structure in which nanoparticles are not added exhibits the highest absorption energy. Additionally, various impact fracture modes were observed in each structure through optical microscopy.

Low Velocity Impact Property of CF/Epoxy Laminate According to Interleaved Structure of Amorphous Halloysite Nanotubes

The cellular components engaged in entry of viruses has been an area of intense investigation in recent years. We examine the entry and receptors used for well-studied and prevalent human DNA viruses adenoviruses, poxviruses and two herpesviruses- herpes simplex virus and Epstein-Barr virus. Little is yet known about the entry or early events for other human DNA viruses. Common themes that emerge for entry of these prevalent human DNA viruses include engagement of multiple receptors, use of cell surface molecules that are prominent and, in most cases, conserved on cells, and interactions with proteins that can alter morphology of the cytoskeleton or modulate intracellular signaling for gene expression. Where available, we provide evidence that entry not only transports the capsid and genome across a cell membrane, but that these events also can set up the cell for subsequent events that contribute to successful viral replication.

Numerical investigation of the bearing performance of Thin- and Thick-Ply hybrid laminates

Thin-ply composite failure modes also significantly differ from conventional ply composite failure modes, with the final failure mechanism switching from irregular progressive failure to direct fracture characterized by a uniform fracture with the reduction of the ply thickness. When open holes and bolt joints are involved, thin-ply-laminated composites exhibit more complex stress states, damage evolution, and failure modes. Compared to the experimental study of thin-ply-laminated composite-bolted joints, there are few reports about numerical analysis. In order to understand the damage evolution and failure mechanism of thin-ply-laminated composites jointed by single-lap bolt, a progressive damage model based on three-dimensional (3D) LaRC failure criterion combined with cohesive element is constructed. Through an energy-based damage evolution method, this model can capture some significant mechanical characteristics in thin-ply-laminated structures, such as the in situ effect, delamination inhibition, and fiber compressive kinking failure. The comparisons between the numerical predictions and experimental observations are made to verify the accuracy of the proposed model. It is found that the predicted stress-displacement curves, failure modes, damage morphologies, etc., are consistent with the experimental results, indicating that the presented progressive damage analysis method displays excellent accuracy. The predicted stress at the onset of delamination is 50% higher than that of the conventional thick materials, which is also consistent with experimental results. Moreover, the numerical model provides evidence that the microstructure of thin-ply-laminated composite performs better in uniformity, which is more conducive to inhibiting the intra-layer damage and the expansion of delamination damage between layers. This study on the damage inhibition mechanism of thin-ply provides a potential analytical tool for evaluating damage tolerance and bearing capabilities in thin-ply-laminated composite-bolted joints.

Modeling Progressive Damage and Failure of Single-Lap Thin-Ply-Laminated Composite-Bolted Joint Using LaRC Failure Criterion

In filament wound composites, fiber bundles cross each other and form an undulating architecture, which may significantly affect the mechanical behavior of composites. In this study, the tensile mechanical behavior of filament wound laminates was studied experimentally and numerically, and the influences of the bundle thickness and winding angle on the mechanical behavior of the filament wound plates were also explored. In the experiments, tensile tests were carried out on filament wound plates and laminated plates. It was found that, compared to laminated plates, filament wound plates had lower stiffness, greater failure displacement, similar failure loads, and more obvious strain concentration areas. In numerical analysis, mesoscale finite element models, which take into account the fiber bundles’ undulating morphology, were created. The numerical predictions correlated well with the experimental ones. Further numerical studies have shown that the stiffness reduction coefficient of filament wound plates with a winding angle of ±55° decreased from 0.78 to 0.74 as the bundle thickness increased from 0.4 mm to 0.8 mm. The stiffness reduction coefficients of filament wound plates with wound angles of ±15°, ±25°, and ±45° were 0.86, 0.83, and 0.8, respectively.
