A strain sensor has been fabricated from a polymer nanocomposite with multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) fillers. The piezoresistivity
of this nanocomposite strain sensor has been investigated based on an improved three-dimensional (3D) statistical resistor network
model incorporating the tunneling effect between the neighboring carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and a fiber reorientation model. The
numerical results agree very well with the experimental measurements. As compared with traditional strain gauges, much higher sensitivity
can be obtained in the nanocomposite sensors when the volume fraction of CNT is close to the percolation threshold. For a small
CNT volume fraction, weak nonlinear piezoresistivity is observed both experimentally and from numerical simulation. The tunneling
effect is considered to be the principal mechanism of the sensor under small strains.

Humidity sensors are widespread in many industrial applications, ranging from environmental and meteorological monitoring, soil water content determination in agriculture, air conditioning systems, food quality monitoring, and medical equipment to many other fields. Thus, an accurate and reliable measurement of water content in different environments and materials is of paramount importance. Due to their rich surface chemistry and structure designability, carbon materials have become interesting in humidity sensing. In addition, they can be easily miniaturized and applied in flexible electronics. Therefore, this short review aims at providing a survey of recent research dealing with carbonaceous materials used as capacitive and resistive humidity sensors. This work collects some successful examples of devices based on carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon black, carbon fibers, carbon soot, and more recently, biochar produced from agricultural wastes. The pros and cons of the different sensors are also discussed in the present review.

Carbon-Based Materials for Humidity Sensing: A Short Review.

Cellulose nanofibril (CNF) films were prepared from side streams generated by the sugarcane industry, that is, bagasse. Two fractionation processes were utilized for comparison purposes: (1) soda and (2) hot water and soda pretreatments. 2,2,6,6‐Tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxyl‐mediated oxidation was applied to facilitate the nanofibrillation of the bagasse fibers. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) was chosen as plasticizer to improve the ductility of CNF films. The neat CNF and biocomposite films (CNF and 40% PEG) were used for fabrication of self‐standing humidity sensors. CNF‐based humidity sensors exhibited high change of impedance, within four orders of magnitude, in response to relative humidity (RH) from 20 to 90%. The use of plasticizer had an impact on sensor kinetics. While the biocomposite film sensors showed slightly longer response time, the recovery time of these plasticized sensors was two times shorter in comparison to sensors without PEG. This study demonstrated that agroindustrial side streams can form the basis for high‐end applications such as humidity sensors, with potential for, for example, packaging and wound dressing applications.

Resistive type humidity sensors made from the composite films of HEC (hydroxyethyl cellulose) and MWCNTs (multiwalled carbon nanotubes) were developed Three kinds of HEC/MWCNT composite films were fabricated, which contained 70, 80 and 90 wt-% MWCNTs Rapid response capability and high sensitivities of the composite sensors were confirmed For the convenience of sensor’s calibration, the non-linear resistance change ratios can be linearised by performing natural logarithm operation on them A new sensitivity factor was defined based on this linear relationship between the logarithm of the resistance change ratio and relative humidity For comparison, a reference humidity sensor was also made from the composite film of HEC filled by 500 wt-% CBs (carbon blacks) Compared with the HEC/MWCNT sensors, the HEC/CB sensor was of much higher sensitivity, but lower repeatability and stability under cyclic humidity changes Possible sensing mechanisms were discussed in detail
