Results from direct and indirect measurements of cosmic rays are reviewed. Emphasis is given to the understanding of the knee in the energy spectrum. The data are compared to contemporary models for the knee. Implications on the present understanding of the origin of galactic cosmic rays are discussed.

On the knee in the energy spectrum of cosmic rays

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) is a composite cosmic ray observatory consisting of three detector arrays: kilometer square array (KM2A), which includes the electromagnetic detector array and muon detector array, water Cherenkov detector array (WCDA) and wide field-of-view Cherenkov telescope array (WFCTA). One of the main scientific objectives of LHAASO is to precisely measure the cosmic rays energy spectrum of individual components from eV to eV. The hybrid observation will be employed by the LHAASO experiment, in which the lateral and longitudinal distributions of extensive air shower can be observed simultaneously. Thus, many kinds of parameters can be used for primary nuclei identification. In this paper, high purity cosmic ray simulation samples of the light nuclei component are obtained using multi-variable analysis. The apertures of 1/4 LHAASO array for pure proton and mixed proton and helium (H&He) samples are and , respectively. Prospect of obtaining proton and H&He spectra from 100 TeV to 4 PeV is discussed.

Expected energy spectrum of cosmic ray protons and helium below 4 PeV measured by LHAASO

The Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), which is one of the main components of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), functions in surveying the northern sky for high-energy gamma ray sources at the energy range around of 100 GeV–30 TeV. The precision of the time measurement for shower particles hitting every detector in the array is directly associated with the detection sensitivity for the sources. The calibration precision of the time offsets among the detector cells should be less than 0.1 ns to obtain less than 0.1o pointing error of the detector to any point source. In this regard, "cross calibration" is employed for the detector array, with 180 bundles of fiber systems guiding the lights of LEDs to each PMT. A test bench comprising fast PMTs and an one-dimensional slide platform is set up in the laboratory to test the fiber bundles. The test bench and the test procedure is described in this paper, and the test results are presented.

Test bench for fibers of the LHAASO-WCDA time calibration system

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) is to be built at Daocheng, Sichuan Province, China. As one of the major components of the LHAASO project, a Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), with an area of 78000 m2, contains 350000 tons of purified water. The water transparency and its stability are critical for successful long-term operation of this project. To gain full knowledge of the water Cherenkov technique and investigate the engineering issues, a 9-cell detector array has been built at the Yangbajing site, Tibet, China. With the help of the distribution of single cosmic muon signals, the monitoring and measurement of water transparency are studied. The results show that a precision of several percent can be obtained for the attenuation length measurement, which satisfies the requirements of the experiment. In the near future, this method could be applied to the LHAASO-WCDA project.

A method to monitor and measure the water transparency in LHAASO-WCDA using cosmic muon signals*

The large high altitude air shower observatory (LHAASO) is being constructed at 4400 m a.s.l. in Daocheng, Sichuan Province, aiming to reveal the secrets of cosmic rays origin. And it has the largest surface muon detector array in the world. Due to the needs of calibration and construction of muon detector, we developed a water optical attenuation measurement device using an 8 m long water tank. The results are presented for filtered water at wavelength of 405 nm, which proves this apparatus can reach an accuracy of about 20% at 100 m. This apparatus has not only a high precision measurement of water attenuation length up to 100 m but is also very convenient to be used, which is crucial for water optical properties study during LHAASO detector construction.

An apparatus to measure water optical attenuation length for LHAASO-MD

A large high-altitude air-shower observatory (LHAASO) is to be built at Shangri-La, Yunnan Province, China. This observatory is intended to conduct sub-TeV gamma astronomy, and as an important component of the LHAASO project, a water Cherenkov detector array (WCDA) is proposed. To investigate engineering issues and fully understand the water Cherenkov technique for detecting air showers, a prototype array at 1% scale of the LHAASO-WCDA has been built at Yang-Ba-Jing, Tibet, China. This paper introduces the prototype array setup and studies its performance by counting rate of each photomultiplier tube (PMT), trigger rates at different PMT multiplicities, and responses to air showers. Finally, the reconstructed shower directions and angular resolutions of the detected showers for the prototype array are given.
