Fatigue Life Assessment of Suspenders in Tied-Arch Bridges Under Random Traffic Loads and Environmental Corrosion

This paper presents a study on the fatigue performance of a new type solid round rigid suspender in a high-speed railway bridge. The relevant information about the model design, manufacture, loading procedure and test scheme is presented. The model test results show that the maximum axial stress amplitude are less than the allowable fatigue stress amplitude for most of the measuring points, and no crack occurs on the short and the long suspender models’ body and connection structural detail after 2 million fatigue cycles, the fatigue performance meets the requirement. The bearing capacity test results after fatigue test show that the short and the long suspender models entering plastic state and without fracture under 131% and 119% of the test load. The suspenders’ bearing capacity meets the design requirement. This fatigue model test study shows that the design of the new type solid round rigid suspender is reasonable and safe.

Model Test for Fatigue Performance on New Type Solid Round Rigid Suspender for a High-Speed Railway Bridge

Fatigue problems are increasing remarkably of riveted steel bridges operated for years. Fatigue assessment costs time and money using measured fatigue stress spectra. Computer simulating of fatigue stress spectra of riveted steel bridges can overcome the disadvantages. Simulating random traffic flow closes to practice according to the statistical results of vehicle load. The stress time history can be obtained through loading simulation traffic flow on the influence line of components. Then, the simulation stress spectra are got by means of rain flow counting method. The effectiveness is verified by comparing with the measured fatigue stress spectra. The result shows that the simulation stress spectra approach the measured stress spectra. It can be used for fatigue assessment.

Computer Simulating of Fatigue Stress Spectra of Riveted Steel Bridges

Fatigue analysis method of suspenders of arch bridge used for highway traffic and light-railway traffic was presented.According to the traffic flow surveys and relevant norms on the load spectrum,the bi-dimensional multi-line road vehicle traffic flows and light-rail traffic flows were generated based on Monte-carlo method.The stress time history of suspenders was obtained through the loads of traffic flow were added on the influence line of the suspenders,and the stress spectrum was computed through the reservoir method.Finally,the equivalent stress amplitude was calculated in accordance with the Palmgren-Miner linear cumulative damage theory,and the assessment of the damage was performed during the design reference period.An arch bridge used for highway traffic and light-railway traffic was selected as case study.Fatigue analysis of suspenders was completed taking into account both the six-lane highways load and two light-rail load.The results show that the approach of simulated traffic flow can be used conveniently to perform fatigue analysis and fatigue residual life assessment of large span bridge used for highway traffic and light-railway traffic.
