The flora is prepared at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in close collaboration with East African Herbarium and in liaison with the University of Dar es Salaam, the University of Nairobi and the Makerere University. Significant contributions are also made by specialists elsewhere. The flora is designed to a high academic standard and should be a useful resource reference for anyone concerned with the identification and utilization of plants in eastern Africa. Each family is published as a separate part.

Invasive alien species (IASs) on islands have broad impacts across biodiversity, agriculture, economy, health and culture, which tend to be stronger than on continents. Across small-island developing states (SIDSs), although only a small number of IASs are widely distributed, many more, including those with greatest impact, are found on only a small number of islands. Patterns of island invasion are not consistent across SIDS geographic regions, with differences attributable to correlated patterns in island biogeography and human development. We identify 15 of the most globally prevalent IASs on islands. IAS impacts on islands are exacerbated through interactions with a number of other global change threats, including over-exploitation, agricultural intensification, urban development and climate change. Biosecurity is critical in preventing IAS invasion of islands. Eradication of IASs on islands is possible at early stages of invasion, but otherwise is largely restricted to invasive mammals, or otherwise control is the only option. Future directions in IAS management and research on islands must consider IASs within a broader portfolio of threats to species, ecosystems and people's livelihoods on islands. We advocate for stronger collaborations among island countries and territories faced with the same IASs in similar socio-ecological environments.

We reviewed the history and conservation of Sophora toromiro, a species that has been extinct in the wild since 1960 but has survived as scattered individuals in botanic gardens and private collections. The short-term conservation of S. toromiro is dependent on the management of surviving ex situ stocks. This is being achieved through international collaboration by a working group established to coordinate the conservation management of the species. Molecular evidence indicates that the species retains greater genetic variability than expected. The greatest amount of genetic variability was located in specimens outside botanic garden collections. No unmodified natural habitat survives on Rapa Nui ( Easter Island); so opportunities to establish a viable wild population are limited. Evidence from past reintroductions indicates that the best short-term opportunity for the species is through conventional horticultural management in botanic gardens and traditional farm plots on Rapa Nui. Some extinct-in-the-wild taxa (sensu World Conservation Union 1994), such as the Toromiro, retain genetic variability, and appropriate reintroduction sites exist. These taxa represent valid priorities for conservation management.




Resumen: Revisamos la historia y conservacion de Sophora toromiro, una especie que se ha extinguido de sitios silvestres desde 1960 pero que ha sobrevivido con individuos esparcidos en jardines botanicos y colecciones privadas. La conservacion a corto plazo de S. toromiro depende del manejo de los organismos sobrevivientes ex situ. Esto se ha logrado mediante la colaboracion internacional de un grupo de trabajo establecido para coordinar el manejo conservacionista de la especie. Las evidencias moleculares indican que la especie ha mantenido una variabilidad genetica mayor de la esperada. La mayor variabilidad genetica se ha localizada en los especimenes fuera de las colecciones de los jardines botanicos. Ningun habitat sin modificar sobrevive en la isla de Pascua de Rapa Nui, por ello, las oportunidades para establecer una poblacion silvestre viable son limitadas. La evidencia de las reintroducciones pasadas indica que la mejor oportunidad a corto plazo para la especie es mediante el manejo horticola convencional en jardines botanicos y sitios con granjas tradicionales en Rapa Nui. Algunos taxones extintos en la naturaleza, como lo es el toromiro, retienen variabilidad genetica y aun existen sitios apropiados para llevar a cabo reintroducciones (sensuIUCN, 1994. A new Arum species (Areae, Araceae) from NE Turkey and Georgia

Amborella trichopoda Baill., the most ancestral angiosperm, has been successfully cultivated in the Botanic Gardens of the University of Bonn in Germany (BG Bonn) for more than a decade. The distribution of this plant – limited to the South Pacific island of New Caledonia – and its cultivation has so far only been achieved in a few botanic gardens. This paper provides details about the cultivation and propagation of Amborella, and information on its cultivation in botanic gardens around the world. The authors propose that the collections of this plant in botanic gardens could be used to establish ex situ conservation collections.
