Identification of mTOR as a novel bifunctional target in chronic myeloid leukemia: dissection of growth-inhibitory and VEGF-suppressive effects of rapamycin in leukemic cells
Matthias Mayerhofer,Karl J. Aichberger,Stefan Florian,Maria Theresa Krauth,Alexander W. Hauswirth,Sophia Derdak,Wolfgang R. Sperr,Harald Esterbauer,Oswald Wagner,Christine Marosi,Winfried F. Pickl,Michael W. Deininger,Ellen Weisberg,Brian J. Druker,James D. Griffin,Christian Sillaber,Peter Valent +16 more
TL;DR: Rapamycin inhibits growth of CML cells in vitro and in vivo and, in addition, down‐regulates expression of VEGF, which may contribute to the antileukemic activity of the drug in CML.

Direct stimulation of T lymphocytes by immunosomes: virus-like particles decorated with T cell receptor/CD3 ligands plus costimulatory molecules.
Sophia Derdak,Hans J. Kueng,Victoria M. Leb,Alina Neunkirchner,Klaus G. Schmetterer,Edith Bielek,Otto Majdic,Walter Knapp,Brian Seed,Winfried F. Pickl +9 more
TL;DR: Basic functions of immunostimulatory molecules meet virus biology and translate into a reductionist antigen-specific T lymphocyte-stimulating vehicle, which is referred to as immunosomes in this work.

Neutralization of SARS-CoV-2 requires antibodies against conformational receptor-binding domain epitopes.

Pickl,Winfried F. Pickl,Rudolf Valenta,Rudolf Valenta +32 more
TL;DR: In this article, the determinants of successful humoral immune response to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are of critical importance for the design of effective vaccines and the evaluation of the degree of protective immunity conferred by exposure to the virus.

Leukosialin (CD43)-major histocompatibility class I molecule interactions involved in spontaneous T cell conjugate formation.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that leukosialin (CD43) and major histocompatibility complex class I molecules (MHC-I) might play a critical role in this process and that both adhesion molecule pairs act in concert to induce and mediate T cell conjugate formation with certain cell types.

Efficient retrovirus-mediated gene transfer of dendritic cells generated from CD34+ cord blood cells under serum-free conditions.
Concha Bello-Fernandez,Marina Matyash,Herbert Strobl,Winfried F. Pickl,Otto Majdic,Stewart D. Lyman,Walter Knapp +6 more
TL;DR: The serum-free system described allows efficient generation and transduction of CD1a+ DCs derived from CD34+ progenitor cells and may be very useful for future therapeutic applications of DCs.
