Prospective study evaluating immune‐mediated mechanisms and predisposing factors underlying persistent postinfectious abdominal complaints
Morgane Florens,Sander Van Wanrooy,James Dooley,Javier Aguilera-Lizarraga,Winde Vanbrabant,Mira M. Wouters,Lukas Van Oudenhove,Willy Peetermans,Adrian Liston,Guy E. Boeckxstaens +9 more
TL;DR: This work prospectively studied healthy subjects traveling to destinations with a high‐risk to develop infectious gastroenteritis in order to identify immune‐mediated mechanisms and risk factors of PI‐IBS.

676 Evidence for Histamine-Mediated Potentiation of TRPV4 and TRPA1 Signalin in Submucosal Neurons of IBS Patients and Mouse DRG Neurons
Dafne Balemans,Javier Aguilera-Lizarraga,Winde Vanbrabant,An Moonen,Carla Cirillo Morgane Florens,Schalk Van der Merwe,Pieter Vanden Berghe,Mira M. Wouters,Guy E. Boeckxstaens +8 more
TL;DR: The unique genetic profile presented in this study suggests that Dclk1+ cells may be relatively quiescent under normal homeostatic conditions but maintain their pluripotency and metabolic machinery required for survival/longevity through the expression of Cdkn1A, CdKn1B, Oct4, Sox2, Nanog, and Klf4, Wif1, RelA, Akt and AMPK.

Sensitivity Testing in Irritable Bowel Syndrome With Rectal Capsaicin Stimulations: Role of TRPV1 Upregulation and Sensitization in Visceral Hypersensitivity?
Sander van Wanrooij,Mira M. Wouters,Lukas Van Oudenhove,Winde Vanbrabant,Stephanie Mondelaers,Patrick Kollmann,Florian Kreutz,Michael Schemann,Guy E. Boeckxstaens +8 more
TL;DR: Increased pain perception was significantly associated with anxiety and VH, symptoms scores of abdominal pain, loose stools, and stool frequency, and TRPV1 expression levels did not correlate with pain perception to capsaicin or clinical symptoms in IBS patients or the subgroups.
Histamine Receptor H1-Mediated Sensitization of TRPV1 Mediates Visceral Hypersensitivity and Symptoms in Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Mira M. Wouters,Dafne Balemans,Sander Van Wanrooy,James Dooley,Vincent Cibert-Goton,Yeranddy A. Alpizar,Eduardo E. Valdez-Morales,Yasmin Nasser,Paul P. Van Veldhoven,Winde Vanbrabant,Schalk Van der Merwe,Raf Mols,Bart Ghesquière,Carla Cirillo,Inge Kortekaas,Peter Carmeliet,Willy Peetermans,Severine Vermeire,Paul Rutgeerts,Patrick Augustijns,Peter Hellings,Peter Hellings,Ann Belmans,Stephen J. Vanner,David C. Bulmer,Karel Talavera,Pieter Vanden Berghe,Adrian Liston,Guy E. Boeckxstaens +28 more
TL;DR: Ebastine, an antagonist of HRH1, reduced visceral hypersensitivity, symptoms, and abdominal pain in patients with IBS and inhibitors of this pathway might be developed as a new treatment approach for IBS.
