Synergetic Adsorption and Electrochemical Classified Recycling of Cr(VI) and Dyes in Synthetic Dyeing Wastewater

Email: abindary@yahoo.com Zinc oxide photocatalyst was synthesized through a low-temperature coprecipitation process using zinc sulfate as precursor for the degradation of Acid Red 57 (AR57) under UV irradiation. The activities of the prepared photocatalyst at different calcination temperatures (400, 500, and 600 C) were investigated. The synthesized zinc oxides were characterized by different techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, N2 adsorption–desorption, and pH titration for the determination of the zero-point charge (pHZPC). The efficiency of photocatalytic degradation of ZnO prepared at the calcination temperatures of 400, 500, and 600 C was 90.03, 77.67, and 72.71%, respectively, after 190 min. The kinetics and scavengers of the reactive species during the degradation were also investigated. It was found that the degradation of AR57 fitted first-order kinetics and the OH• radicals were the main species. During irradiation, the formation of OH• free radicals was ascertained by photoluminescence studies using terephthalic acid as the probe molecule.

Theoretical calculations for localized surface plasmon resonance effects of Cu/TiO2 nanosphere: Generation, modulation, and application in photocatalysis

The contamination by hexavalent chromium and organic pollutants is a serious health issue. Moreover, hexavalent chromium can react with organic pollutants to form a complex which is difficult to treat, and thus remains in the natural environment for long times. Simultaneous photocatalysis can remove both organic pollutants and hexavalent chromium. Here we review the use of period 4 metal oxide-based photocatalysts for the removal of organic pollutants and hexavalent chromium. Titanium dioxide exhibited the highest performance, up to 100%, in removing both hexavalent chromium and organic pollutants from water.

Simultaneous remediation of hexavalent chromium and organic pollutants in wastewater using period 4 transition metal oxide-based photocatalysts: a review

The photocatalytic performance and underlying mechanism of Cu modified TiO2 have attracted a wide range of scientific interest in recent years. However, the role of copper oxidation states in the localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) effects and photocatalytic activity is still debated. Here, we utilize the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to mimic spontaneous oxidation of Cu (e.g., Cu2O) in Cu/TiO2 heterostructures and use density functional theory (DFT) to calculate the electronic structures of the interfaces. On the basis of FDTD results, in the case of the Cu@Cu2O/TiO2 configurations, it has been found that the LSPR peak of Cu is directly modulated to near 650 nm, and the interfacial electric field intensity is weakened. In the case of the Cu/TiO2/Cu2O configurations, in which the Cu core and TiO2 nanoparticles can directly come in contact with each other, this successfully improved the interfacial electric field intensity generated by LSPR effects of the Cu core. Moreover, Fano resonance is introduced in the Cu/TiO2/Cu2O configuration to further enhance the interfacial electric field enhancement. Meanwhile, the hot electrons generated by the LSPR effects of the Cu core readily cross the lower Schottky barrier at the Cu/TiO2 interface. Based on the analysis of electronic structures, three types of band alignments may exist in the Cu/Cu2O/TiO2 ternary composite photocatalysts, and the possible electron transfer processes are discussed in detail. Therefore, the LSPR effects (including: providing new absorption peaks in the visible-light region, enhancing the interfacial electric field, and producing hot electrons) of the Cu core can be modulated by the thickness and position of the Cu2O covering, which can be achieved by controlling the preparation conditions in practice. The existence of many kinds of interfaces in the Cu/Cu2O/TiO2 ternary composite photocatalysts makes it possible and facile to design a fast separation and transmission channel of photo-generated carriers. The coupling of interface engineering and LSPR effects provides more available strategies and degrees of freedom to promote the performance of the Cu/Cu2O/TiO2 ternary composite photocatalyst. Therefore, careful optimization is necessary to promote the synergistic boosting of photocatalytic performance of Cu/Cu2O/TiO2 ternary composites.

Unraveling the role of cuprous oxide and boosting solar energy conversion via interface engineering in a Cu/TiO2 plasmonic photocatalyst

Because of its large bandgap, TiO2 can function only under UV light. TiO2 surface modification with noble metal nanoparticles can extend the light absorption from UV to visible light region and enhance the photocatalytic quantum yield. In this work, TiO2 nanorods (Cu/TiO2) modified by copper nanoparticles were prepared by a one-step solvothermal method at low cost. The resultant Cu/TiO2 nanorods show excellent synergistic effect in the oxidation of methylene blue (MB) and the reduction of aqueous Cr(VI) under solar light irradiation. Mechanistic investigation suggests that the Cr(VI) species could effectively scavenge the electrons from MB in the presence of the as-prepared photocatalyst, leading to the simultaneous removal of both pollutants. Being economically viable, environmentally sustainable, and highly efficient, the proposed photocatalyst holds promise for technologies involving simultaneous organic degradation and heavy metal removal in wastewater treatment.
