In this study, we investigated the impact of the lighting environment on psychological perception, physiology, and productivity and then designed lighting control strategies based on the experimental results. The research was conducted in a smart lighting laboratory, and 67 subjects were tested in different illuminances and correlated color temperatures (CCTs). During the experiment, the physiological data of subjects were continuously recorded, while the psychology and productivity results were evaluated by questionnaires and working tests, respectively. The experimental results found that both illuminance and CCT could significantly influence the feeling of comfort and relaxation of the subjects. Warm CCT and higher illuminance (3000 K–590 lux) made subjects feel more comfortable. Productivity reached its maximum value with illuminance above 500 lux and equivalent melanopic lux (EML) higher than 150. The brain-wave and heart-rate changes did not have a close relationship with either illuminance or CCT, but the heart rate slightly increased in the adjustable lighting mode. Regardless of the initial value setting, the subjects preferred intermediate CCT (4200 K) and bright illumination (500 lux) after self-adjustment. Finally, we proposed three comprehensive lighting control strategies based on psychology, productivity, circadian rhythm, and energy-saving.

Effect of Color Temperature and Illuminance on Psychology, Physiology, and Productivity: An Experimental Study

Melatonin is a simple compound with a proper chemical name N-acetyl-5-methoxy tryptamine and known as a hormone controlling circadian rhythm. Humans produce melatonin at night which is the reason for sleeping in the night and awakening over the day. Melatonin interacts with melatonin receptors MT1 and MT2 but it was also revealed that melatonin is a strong antioxidant and it also has a role in regulation of cell cycle. Currently, melatonin is used as a drug for some types of sleep disorder but the recent research points to the fact that melatonin can also serve for the other purposes including prophylaxis or therapy of lifestyle diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders and exposure to chemicals. This review summarizes basic facts and direction of the current research on melatonin. The actual literature was scrutinized for the purpose of this review.

New uses of Melatonin as a Drug, a Review.

The human pupil behavior has gained increased attention due to the discovery of the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells and the afferent pupil control path's role as a biomarker for cognitive processes. Diameter changes in the range of 10-2 mm are of interest, requiring reliable and characterized measurement equipment to accurately detect neurocognitive effects on the pupil. Mostly commercial solutions are used as measurement devices in pupillometry which is associated with high investments. Moreover, commercial systems rely on closed software, restricting conclusions about the used pupil-tracking algorithms. Here, we developed an open-source pupillometry platform consisting of hardware and software competitive with high-end commercial stereo eye-tracking systems. Our goal was to make a professional remote pupil measurement pipeline for laboratory conditions accessible for everyone. This work's core outcome is an integrated cross-platform (macOS, Windows and Linux) pupillometry software called PupilEXT, featuring a user-friendly graphical interface covering the relevant requirements of professional pupil response research. We offer a selection of six state-of-the-art open-source pupil detection algorithms (Starburst, Swirski, ExCuSe, ElSe, PuRe and PuReST) to perform the pupil measurement. A developed 120-fps pupillometry demo system was able to achieve a calibration accuracy of 0.003 mm and an averaged temporal pupil measurement detection accuracy of 0.0059 mm in stereo mode. The PupilEXT software has extended features in pupil detection, measurement validation, image acquisition, data acquisition, offline pupil measurement, camera calibration, stereo vision, data visualization and system independence, all combined in a single open-source interface, available at https://github.com/openPupil/Open-PupilEXT.

PupilEXT: Flexible Open-Source Platform for High-Resolution Pupillometry in Vision Research.

Thermal responsive windows are highly promising for the next-generation architecture for their self-powered solar transmittance. However, existing thermochromic techniques, include VO2- and hydrogel-based systems, have not been used for large-scale in window applications, because of the technical obstacles such as low luminous transmittance (Tlum), poor solar modulation ability (ΔTsol), high transition temperature (Tc) and high haze rate. To tackle those issues, a new thermal-responsive design, i.e., the Ammonia Pressure Powered smart (APPs) window, was proposed, with Cu2+ and sodium copper chlorophyllin (SCC) providing solar spectrum management. In comparisons to traditional thermochromic windows, the new concept of APPs window shows significant energy-related advances. Particularly, a feasible Tc (24–36 °C), outstanding ΔTsol (67 %), and high Tlum in both cold (84 %) and hot (47.4 %) states are reported in this study. In addition, outdoor experimental test of the APPs window demonstrated that it could produce a rational daylight level of both photopic effects and melanopic effects, whilst reduce the room temperature by about 4 °C on hot sunny day. Furthermore, energy simulations conducted for the APPs window in three different cities (Singapore, Hong Kong and Harbin) indicate its superior performance, compared to the double-layered low-e glazing windows, across various climatic conditions. With cost-effective materials and excellent performance, the authors believe that this new APPs window represents a smart and sustainable solution for the development of next-generation green buildings.
