An oxidative halogenation process involving contacting a hydrocarbon, for example, ethylene, or a halogenated hydrocarbon with a source of halogen, such as hydrogen chloride, and a source of oxygen in the presence of a catalyst so as to form a halocarbon, preferably a chlorocarbon, having a greater number of halogen substituents than the starting hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon, for example, 1,2-dichloroethane. The catalyst is a novel composition comprising copper dispersed on a porous rare earth halide support, preferably, a porous rare earth chloride support. A catalyst precursor composition comprising copper dispersed on a porous rare earth oxyhalide support is disclosed. Use of the porous rare earth halide and oxyhalide as support materials for catalytic components is disclosed.

The invention relates to a method for the production of 1,2-dichloroethane, comprising the following steps: (A) feeding a feed gas flow containing an ethane into a dehydrogenation zone; dehydrogenating the ethane into ethene while obtaining a product gas flow containing ethane, ethene and minor constituents; (B) feeding the dehydrogenated product gas flow containing the ethane and ethene into a flow or several partial flows, optionally after separating the minor constituents, in one or more chlorination zones; chlorinating ethene into 1,2-dichloroethane while obtaining one or more product gas flows containing 1,2-dichloroethane, ethane and optionally other minor; obtaining 1,2-dichloroethane and one or more circuit gas flows containing ethane and recirculating the circuit gas flow(s) containing ethane to the ethane dehydrogenation.

A process for producing vinyl chloride monomer where significant quantities of both ethane and ethylene in input streams to the affiliated reactor where hydrogen chloride in the reactor effluent is essentially fully recovered from the reactor effluent in the first unit operation after the ethane/ethylene-to-vinyl reaction step or stage. Steps are presented of oxydehydro-chlorination catalytic reaction of ethane, ethylene, hydrogen chloride, oxygen, and chlorine; quenching the reactor effluent stream to provide a raw product stream having essentially no hydrogen chloride; and separation of the raw product stream into a vinyl chloride monomer product stream and into a lights stream; and recycling the lights steam to the reactor.

Process for vinyl chloride manufacture from ethane and ethylene with immediate HCl recovery from reactor effluent

An oxidative halogenation process involving contacting methane, a C1 halogenated hydrocarbon, or a mixture thereof with a source of halogen and a source of oxygen, at a molar ratio of reactant hydrocarbon to source of halogen in a feed to the reactor greater than 23/1 , and/or at a molar ratio of reactant hydrocarbon to source of oxygen in a feed to the reactor greater than about 46/1; in the presence of a rare earth halide or rare earth oxyhalide catalyst, to produce a halogenated C1 product having at least one more halogen as compared with the C1 reactant hydrocarbon, preferably, methyl chloride. The process can be advantageously conducted to total conversion of source of halogen and source of oxygen. The process can be advantageously conducted with essentially no halogen in the feed to the reactor, by employing a separate catalyst halogenation step in a pulse, swing or circulating bed mode. The production of methyl halide can be integrated into downstream processes for manufacture of valuable commodity chemicals.

Oxidative Halogenation of C1 Hydrocarbons to Halogenated C1 Hydrocarbons

The present invention provides an efficient process for the production of ethylene or a mixture of ethylene and vinyl chloride, in which some 1,2-dichloroethane (EDC) may also be produced, by reacting chlorine with ethane. The process is characterized by a conversion of ethane per pass through the reactor of at least about 50%, and a combined molar yield of ethylene and vinyl chloride of at least about 80% based on the ethane consumed. In accordance with this invention, there is provided a process for preparing ethylene or a mixture of ethylene and vinyl chloride by the reaction of ethane and chlorine which comprises: (a) providing a stream of ethane feed gas and a stream of chlorine feed gas; (b) preheating either said ethane stream only or both said ethane and chlorine streams; (c) thoroughly mixing said ethane and chlorine feed gases within about one second and at a molar ratio of ethane to chlorine of at least about 0.9:1.0; (d) said preheating being sufficient to enable the resultant mixture to have a temperature above the free radical formation temperature for chlorine; and (e) permitting said ethane and chlorine in said mixture to react so that the reacted mixture has a temperature between about 600° C. and 800° C.; whereby the combined molar yield of ethylene and vinyl chloride is at least about 80 percent of the ethane reacted.
