1Marianne Moore’s first biographer did not get permission to quote from her archive. I knew this when I began contemplating a new biography and knew that he had to rewrite his book at the last minute to eliminate quotations. I thus saw the estate’s support as requisite for embarking on my own project. Shortly before I approached Moore’s niece and literary executor to request that support, I had read Janet Malcolm’s The Silent Woman, which describes in sinister terms the power that executors of the Sylvia Plath estate wielded over biographers. Olwyn Hughes, Plath’s sister-in-law and literary executor, “delivered her spider’s invitation” when she offered the estate’s support to biographer Anne Stevenson. By accepting the invitation, “Anne entered the web.” “For the next two years,” according to Malcolm, “Anne and Olwyn were locked in mortal, uneven combat over the book. Anne’s attempts to reclaim it—to be the author of her own book—were unsuccessful; she had lost control of the text when she made her devil’s pact with Olwyn.” 2 But no one warned me about the power a dead subject can have over her biographer. Anyone the slightest bit familiar with Moore’s poetry will know that all forms of protection—shells, armor, shields, and camouflage—are among her most characteristic motifs. Yet Marianne Moore left no indication that she wished to protect herself against biographers. She did not, for example, destroy her correspondence as Willa Cather did, request that it be destroyed as Emily Dickinson did, or place rigid restrictions upon its use as Flannery O’Connor did. Although she became impatient with the number of requests she received in later years—“I beg to be neglected,” she told one interviewer 3 —it was only because she lacked the time to answer all the queries that she deemed worthy of a response. She spent hours each day answering her mail and always gave serious attention to the queries of graduate students and other scholars.

It has troubled some readers that Marianne Moore never included Emily Dickinson among her influences. But Moore had little exposure to Dickinson before the publication of The Single Hound in 1914, just months before her own poems began to appear in print. By 1924 Moore had come to appreciate Dickinson enough to be flattered by comparisons with her. By 1932, when she wrote a review of Dickinson's letters, Moore was less in need of literary models than of personal ones. Dickinson became for her a model of personal and artistic integrity, one she willingly proferred to the next generation of poets.
