The invention provides a unique interactive play experience carried out utilizing a toy 'wand' (100) and/or other actuation/tracking device (321, 325). In one embodiment the wand (100) incorporates a wireless transmitter (150) and motion-sensitive circuitry (115) adapted to actuate the transmitter in response to particular learned wand motions. The wand allows play participants to electronically and 'magically' interact with their surrounding play environment simply by pointing, touching and/or using their wands (100) in a particular manner to achieve desired goals or produce desired effects (376, 377, 378). Various wireless receivers or actuators (362) are distributed throughout the play facility to support such wireless interaction and to facilitate full immersion in a fantasy experience in which participants can enjoy the realistic illusion of practicing, performing and mastering 'real' magic.

Magical wand and interactive play experience

Embodiments of the invention provide a unique interactive game that includes multiple dynamic layers in which a participant may complete a variety of challenges and/or tasks. For example, the participant may obtain a toy “wand” from a retail phase that is usable in an interactive entertainment phase. The interactive entertainment phase may include multiple interrelated layers such that progress in one or more layers may affect the participant's experience in one or more other layers. The participant may also receive training on how to use the wand and/or complete one or more special effects, adventures and/or quests. During or following the interactive entertainment phase, the participant may use accumulated points and/or powers to redeem prizes and/or compete against other participants, such as in a duel.

Disclosed are systems and methods for peer-to-peer communication over a network between a first node behind a first network address translator (NAT) and a second node behind a second NAT, despite the first NAT and the second NAT intervening between the first and second nodes. The first NAT is a Symmetric NAT. A port prediction is performed wherein the first node constructs a list of predicted transport addresses on the first NAT. A message containing the list of predicted transport addresses is sent from the first node to the second node. A connectivity check is performed with the second node using the predicted transport addresses.

A multi-media interactive play system has a number of play elements situated in a variety of play environments or play media. The play elements are linked to a common record of participant performance, progress, character attributes, etc. The participant's performance in the play elements determines the play elements to which the participant may proceed as well as the play parameters of the play element in which the participant is currently involved. The play elements are thus interlinked to define a sequence or path network along which the participant advances. By advancing through the play elements the participant carries out a plot, story, theme, etc. that attaches a significance to the successful completion of a given play element or elements. Also disclosed in a variety of play elements suitable for use in the system, an example of a plot or theme that may be carried out by the system, and a send/receive radio frequency network that may be used to track play participants in a play center.

Multi-media interactive play system

Handling of multiple connections during NAT traversal for a node behind a symmetric NAT is disclosed. The likelihood of connection failure during symmetric NAT traversal may be reduced by serializing critical time windows after port prediction. Once port prediction has begun for a first connection, port prediction for a subsequent connection may be delayed until a connectivity check has begun for the first connection. This process may be repeated to handle NAT traversal for multiple simultaneous connections to different nodes.

A portable wireless transceiver device ( 22 ) is carried by an individual ( 24 ) during the normal course of daily activities. The device ( 22 ) receives and records load instructions ( 84 ) from other transmitter devices ( 22, 26 ) at difference locations and at different instants in time through the day. Later, the device ( 22 ) interfaces a fixed-location platform ( 58 ) and the load instructions ( 84 ) are downloaded from the device ( 22 ) to the platform ( 58 ). A game application ( 64 ), executable from the fixed-location platform ( 58 ), is updated in response to the downloaded load instructions ( 84 ) to affect an outcome of the game application ( 64 ).
