In one embodiment, the connector has a plurality of ports in multi-row configuration, and the insert assembly includes a substrate adapted to receive one or more electronic components such as choke coils, transformers, or other signal conditioning elements or magnetics. The substrate also interfaces with the conductors of two modular ports of the connector, and is removable from the housing such that an insert assembly of a different electronics or terminal configuration can be substituted therefor. In this fashion, the connector can be configured to a plurality of different standards (e.g., Gigabit Ethernet and 10/100). In yet another embodiment, the connector assembly comprises a plurality of light sources (e.g., LEDs) received within the housing. Methods for manufacturing the aforementioned embodiments are also disclosed.

The third pair of conductors has at least two locations (45) in which the conductors of the pair cross each other, and is arranged such that, between the crossover locations, the third pair of conductors forms an expanded loop (48) that brings segments (50a, 50b) of the third conductor into closer proximity to the second and fourth pairs of conductors than to the first pair of conductors.

A modular connector comprises an insulative housing that accepts an RJ-45 style jack from its front, and a molded insert from the opposite side. Each molded insert includes a signal conditioning circuit that provides a proper electrical coupling between a physical interface device (PHY) or encoder/decoder and an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable to a high speed computer network. Such signal conditioning comprises a common mode choke for each of the transmitter and receiver circuit pairs that are constructed from twin-lead transmission line sections. Each common mode choke comprises two stiff wire conductors that are brought together at a uniform critical separation distance for a critical longitudinal run length. The wire size, surrounding dielectric, separation distance, and run length are all controlled to arrive at a common-mode choke equivalent with series inductance, transformer coupling, and capacitance values suitable for use with 100BASE-T Fast Ethernet and 1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet.
