The disclosure relates to using a control service to control external access to APIs of IoT devices on a private network. An external application can request access to an API, and in response, the control service can monitor broadcasts from the IoT devices indicating what APIs they have available. If a match exists, the control service can request user authorization to allow the requested access. The user can grant or deny the requested access, and place limitations on the authorized access. The control service uses this information to open a connection between the requesting application and the IoT device having the requested API, and via this connection, the requesting application can access and control the device running the requested API.

An apparatus and method are described for secure communication between IoT devices and an IoT service. For example, one embodiment of a system comprises: an Internet of Things (IoT) service to establish communication with an IoT device through an IoT hub or a mobile user device; a first encryption engine on the IoT service comprising key generation logic to generate a service public key and a service private key; a second encryption engine on the IoT device comprising key generation logic to generate a device public key and a device private key; the first encryption engine to transmit the service public key to the second encryption engine and the second encryption engine to transmit the device public key to the first encryption engine; the first encryption engine to use the device public key and the service private key to generate a secret; the second encryption engine to use the service public key and the device private key to generate the same secret; and wherein once the secret is generated, the first encryption engine and the second encryption engine encrypt and decrypt data packets transmitted between the first encryption engine and the second encryption engine using the secret or using a data structure derived from the secret.

Apparatus and method for establishing secure communication channels in an internet of things (IoT) system

The present disclosure relates to setup of IoT network devices, and specifically to setup of multiple similar IoT devices at substantially the same time using joint authentication. Embodiments include, for example, receiving, at an existing network device on a network, one or more communications, wherein the one or more communications include an indication that multiple new network devices are associated with the network; receiving an indication that the multiple new network devices have generated a setup access point; establishing a connection with the access point of each of the multiple new network devices; receiving identification information, wherein the identification information includes information identifying each of the multiple new network devices; and transmitting the identification information identifying each of the multiple new network devices, wherein when the identification information is received, the identification information facilitates generating an authentication query to authenticate one or more of the multiple new network devices.

A measure of similarity between an identifier of a sender of the message and each identifier of one or more identifiers of each trusted contact of a plurality of trusted contacts of a recipient of the message is determined. In the event the sender of the message is not any of the trusted contacts but at least one of the measure of similarity between the identifier of the sender of the message and a selected identifier of a selected trusted contact of the plurality of trusted contacts meets a threshold, the message is modified, if applicable, to alter content of a data field that includes an identification of the sender of the message. The data field is one of a plurality of data fields included in a header of the message.

A system and method are described for accurately detecting a location of a wireless device. For example, one embodiment of a method comprises: collecting signal strength data indicating signal strength between a wireless device and a plurality of IoT devices and/or IoT hubs in a user's home; associating the signal strength data with locations in the user's home and storing the association in a location database; and determining a current location of the wireless device by comparing the signal strength data in the database with current signal strength data indicating current signal strength between the wireless device and the plurality of IoT devices and/or IoT hubs.

System and method for accurately sensing user location in an IoT system

An agent device is registered in a first device registry maintained by a first registry apparatus for authenticating agent devices for communicating with application providing apparatuses. The agent device can be assigned to a second device registry maintained by second registry apparatus. The method of assignment comprises the first registry apparatus receiving from a requestor device a device assignment request. In response to the device assignment request, the first registry apparatus checks whether the agent device is allowed to be assigned to the second device registry, and if so, the agent device transmits second authentication information for authenticating the identity of the agent device to the second registry apparatus which registers this in the second device registry.

Method for assigning an agent device from a first device registry to a second device registry

A trusted identity may be established for an agent device for performing trusted communication with one or more application providing apparatuses. The method of establishing the trusted identity includes determining which of a number of authentication models is a selected authentication model to be used for uniquely authenticating the agent device. First and second authentication information is generated according to the selected model. The first authentication information is for uniquely authenticating the identity of the device and the second authentication information is for verifying that the agent device has the first authentication information. The first authentication information is embedded in the agent device while the second authentication information is transmitted to a registry apparatus for maintaining a device of agent devices. Authentication model information identifying which is the selected authentication model is also sent to the registry.

Method of establishing a trusted identity for an agent device

A registry apparatus is provided for maintaining a device registry of agent devices for communicating with application providing apparatus. The registry comprises authentication information for uniquely authenticating at least one trusted agent device. In response to an authentication request from an agent device, the authentication information for that device is obtained from the registry, and authentication of the agent device is performed. If the authentication is successful, then application key information is transmitted to at least one of the agent device and the application providing apparatus.
