Brewer,Mark Svoboda,Rogier Westerhoff,Albert van Dijk,Benjamin Lloyd-Hughes,Florian Pappenberger,Micha Werner,Emanuel Dutra,Fredrik Wetterhall,Wolfgang Wagner,Siegfried D. Schubert,Kingtse C. Mo,Margaret Nicholson,Lynette Bettio,Liliana Nunez,Rens van Beek,Marc F. P. Bierkens,Luis Gustavo Gonçalves de Gonçalves,João Gerd Zell de Mattos,Richard Lawford +26 more
TL;DR: A key goal of a GDEWS is to maximize the lead time for early warning, allowing drought managers and disaster coordinators more time to put mitigation measures in place to reduce the vulnerability to drought.
Global meteorological drought – Part 1: Probabilistic monitoring
Emanuel Dutra,F. Wetterhall,F. Di Giuseppe,Gustavo Naumann,Paulo Barbosa,Jürgen Vogt,Will Pozzi,Florian Pappenberger +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a probabilistic approach based on ECMWF forecasts is presented to assess the current drought situation in a near-real-time way, which is similar to GPCC and TRMM in terms of correlation and root mean square errors.
Global meteorological drought – Part 2: Seasonal forecasts
Emanuel Dutra,Will Pozzi,Fredrik Wetterhall,F. Di Giuseppe,Linus Magnusson,Gustavo Naumann,Paulo Barbosa,Jürgen Vogt,Florian Pappenberger +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, seasonal forecasts of meteorological drought using the standardized precipitation index (SPI) are produced using two data sets as initial conditions: the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA-Interim reanalysis (ERAI); and two seasonal forecasts, the most recent ECMWF seasonal forecast system and climatologically based ensemble forecasts.
