Product sustainability approaches, such as life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC), are becoming increasingly critical to influence product decisions for all lifecycle stages. However, LCA and LCC methods must be integrated into the product lifecycle processes for sharing their data semantics with other applications in order to support decisions in the technical, ecological and economic aspects of products. Semantics sharing has raised big challenges in understanding and interpreting the intended meaning of LCA, LCC and other product data. This paper presents an ontology-driven, standard-based approach to the explicit capture and reuse of product data semantics for heterogeneous information sharing across lifecycle processes in computer aided design, quality assurance, LCA and LCC analysis, and product development process management. The approach incorporates object-based product data modeling, interoperability standardization, and ontology engineering to address the product data semantics sharing issues. A software implementation of the approach with a use scenario is also discussed in the paper.

This paper presents a semantics-enabled approach to the integration of knowledge maps with design process configurations to support more meaningful communication and seamless collaboration between cross-functional teams and concurrent workflows in new product introduction (NPI) processes. Integrating knowledge maps in design process configurations for concurrently engineered product development

Eco-design plays a central role in balancing technical, economic, environmental, even social concerns in new product introduction (NPI) to achieve optimized sustainability performance throughout the product lifecycle. Applying eco-design and sustainability principles to the NPI process, this paper presents an integrated sustainable design approach to the modeling, analysis and improvement of product performance in lifecycle cost control, environmental impact reduction, and regulation compliance management. By integrating the sustainability analysis methods (e.g. life cycle assessment and life cycle costing) into product design and development, the approach establishes a methodological framework consisting of lifecycle sustainability metrics, inventory databases, and design support tools for design options comparison and decisions making in improvements of lifecycle sustainability. Use scenarios are discussed in the paper to demonstrate the use of the approach to eco-design of consumer electronic products.

Eco-Design for Product Lifecycle Sustainability

The management of design quality assurance (QA) process has a significant impact on engineering design performance in cycle time acceleration, rework cost reduction, product development risk control, and customer expectations satisfaction. To achieve these high performance goals in design, it is critical to have systematic methods for modelling the design QA processes, to perform various analyses of the underlying process models with different performance perspectives, and to implement the process modelling and analysis methods together with the performance measures in software tools for practical use in quality process management. This paper introduces a framework for managing the quality assurance process in consumer electronics design. It consists of QA process modelling and performance modelling approaches, model variable analysis techniques, and ontology driven software implementations to provide semantics-based quality process management services in defining, analysing, and controlling the design QA process for engineering design performance improvement. The approaches, tools and process management services developed have been applied to case studies of QA process management in the consumer electronics design.
