The service performance of the turbine blade root of an aero-engine depends on the microstructures in its superficial layer. This work investigated the surface deformation structures of turbine blade root of single crystal nickel-based superalloy produced under different creep feed grinding conditions. Gradient microstructures in the superficial layer were clarified and composed of a severely deformed layer (DFL) with nano-sized grains (48–67 nm) at the topmost surface, a DFL with submicron-sized grains (66–158 nm) and micron-sized laminated structures at the subsurface, and a dislocation accumulated layer extending to the bulk material. The formation of such gradient microstructures was found to be related to the graded variations in the plastic strain and strain rate induced in the creep feed grinding process, which were as high as 6.67 and 8.17×107 s-1, respectively. In the current study, the evolution of surface gradient microstructures was essentially a transition process from a coarse single crystal to nano-sized grains and, simultaneously, from one orientation of a single crystal to random orientations of polycrystals, during which the dislocation slips dominated the creep feed grinding induced microstructure deformation of single crystal nickel-based superalloy.

Creep feed grinding induced gradient microstructures in the superficial layer of turbine blade root of single crystal nickel-based superalloy

The gradient nanostructure evolution and the mechanism governing this evolution of α phase in Ti-6Al-4V alloy induced by ultrasonic surface rolling process were investigated. A gradient nanostructure consisting of a roughly equiaxed nanograin layer, an elongated nano-lamellar layer, an elongated ultrafine lamellar layer, a refined grain layer, and a low-strain coarse-grained layer was formed with a thickness of more than 400 µm. The formation of gradient nanostructure of α phase was dominated by complex dislocation activities in hcp grains without twins occurring, supplemented by hexagonal close-packed (hcp) titanium (Ti) to face-centered cubic (fcc) Ti phase transformation. During the microstructural evolution, the coarse hcp-Ti grains were first elongated into lamellae. Then, these sub-micron lamellae were gradually transformed into roughly equiaxed nanograins via two deformation modes of longitudinal splitting and transverse breakdown, accompanied by dynamic recovery. The fcc-Ti grains were deformed mainly via twin-twin intersections and twin-dislocation interactions, accompanied by longitudinal splitting and transverse breakdown, resulted in refinement of the micron-scale fcc-Ti grains to roughly equiaxed nanograins. The interaction of hcp and fcc phases influenced and synergistically promoted the microstructural evolution process. In addition, the microhardness improvement in the surface layer of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was attributed to the increase of dislocation density, grain refinement and the occurrence of deformation twinning in fcc-Ti grains.

In this study, (austenite+ferrite+κ-carbide) triplex microstructures were obtained from the hot-rolling and subsequent 800 °C-annealing of Fe-0.8C-(12,15,20)Mn-7Al (wt%) lightweight steels, and their effects on ultra-high strength along with good ductility were investigated in relation with microstructural evolutions occurring during the tensile deformation. In the 12-wt%-Mn hot-rolled specimen, lamellar κ-carbides were populated along austenite grain boundaries, which seriously deteriorated the ductility. When the Mn content increased to 15 or 20 wt%, the volume fraction of κ-carbide decreased, and slip bands were sufficiently formed inside austenite grains during the deformation, which resulted in excellent ductility as well as ultra-high strengths. Very high yield strength was also achieved by forming triplex microstructures, in which the austenite deformed during the hot rolling greatly contributed to the strength enhancement. In the 800 °C-annealed specimens, the decreased volume fraction and morphological change from lamellar to polygonal-particle type of κ-carbides enhanced the ductility in spite of the slightly reduced strengths. This was because slip bands were sufficiently formed in austenite grains during the deformation, while voids were formed inside well-developed slip bands. The existence of a large amount of austenite was highly valuable for increasing the ductility by developing fine dislocation substructures such as Taylor lattices as a key feature of deformation mechanisms.

Effect of friction hardening on the surface mechanical properties and tribological behavior of biocompatible Ti-6Al-4V alloy

In this work, the heavy deformation was performed on Ti6Al4V alloy by using surface mechanical grinding treatment (SMGT) in order to obtain surface nanocrystalline layer. The phase structure and microstructures in the deformation zones were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. The nanocrystallization mechanisms of α and α phase were clarified. The results show that a gradient structure including nano grain, quasi nanograin and micro-grains was achieved within the depth of 500 μm below the surface. The depth of nanocrystallines layer was at least 20 μm. From the non deformation zone in the center to the heavy deformation zone close to treated surface, dislocation densities gradually increased. The original coarse grains gradually evolved into dislocation cell structures and subgrains through dislocation movement. In the depth of about 20 μm below the treated surface, the subgrains began to split into nano-scale grains with high angle grain boundaries by lattice rotation and tilting mechanisms. During SMGT, β phase deformed and refined prior to α phase, and inhibited the generation of twinning in α grain. The coordinated deformation between a and β phase promoted the formation of nanocrystallines.
