Equine viral arteritis is an infrequently encountered contagious viral disease of equids that has assumed increased veterinary medical and economic significance since the 1984 epidemic in Thoroughbreds in Kentucky. The most important consequences of this infection are abortion in the mare and establishment of the carrier state in the stallion. Equine arteritis virus becomes localized in the reproductive tract of a relatively high percentage of infected stallions which serve as very efficient transmitters of the infection through direct or indirect venereal contact with susceptible mares. The long-term persistently infected stallion appears to play a major epidemiologic role in the dissemination and perpetuation of the virus in horse populations throughout the world. Aspects of the pathogenesis, immunity, and epidemiology of equine arteritis virus are discussed in relation to current methods for the diagnosis, treatment, and control of this disease.

Ultrasonographic evaluation of the equine placenta by transrectal and transabdominal approach in the normal pregnant mare

Assessment of feto-placental well-being in the mare from mid-gestation to term: transrectal and transabdominal ultrasonographic features.

Mares with complicated pregnancies (illness, problems at parturition or delivery of an abnormal foal, n = 30) were scanned transabdominally from 298 days gestation to term in order to measure fetal size, evaluate fetal well-being and characterise the intrauterine environment. The results of the last scan obtained prior to parturition were compared to normal data obtained from fetuses of comparable gestational age to develop a biophysical profile specific for the equine fetus. Twelve mares produced a normal foal (positive outcome) and 18 mares delivered 19 abnormal foals (negative outcome). Both fetuses that were inactive throughout the entire scan and 4 of 5 fetuses with heart rate abnormalities were abnormal at birth. Three of 4 fetuses surrounded by decreased allantoic fluid quantities had a negative outcome. All mares with large anechoic spaces between the uterus and placenta (n = 3) and/or thickened uteroplacental units (n = 5) delivered abnormal foals. There was a significant correlation between fetal aortic diameter and neonatal foal weight in these complicated pregnancies (P<0.0001, r = 0.85). Fetal aortic diameters were predicted from maternal weight and 6 fetuses had smaller than predicted aortic diameters, all with negative outcomes. A biophysical profile of the equine fetus from 298 days gestational age to term was developed that included 6 factors related to pregnancy outcome: fetal heart rate, fetal aortic diameter, maximal fetal fluid depths, uteroplacental contact, uteroplacental thickness and fetal activity. The profile proved informative about fetal well-being, perinatal morbidity and perinatal mortality. A low score was a definite indication of an impending negative outcome; however, a high score was not assurance of a positive outcome. The utility of such a biophysical profile and future directions for research are discussed.

With only three living individuals left on this planet, the northern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) could be considered doomed for extinction. It might still be possible, however, to rescue the (sub)species by combining novel stem cell and assisted reproductive technologies. To discuss the various practical options available to us, we convened a multidisciplinary meeting under the name "Conservation by Cellular Technologies." The outcome of this meeting and the proposed road map that, if successfully implemented, would ultimately lead to a self-sustaining population of an extremely endangered species are outlined here. The ideas discussed here, while centered on the northern white rhinoceros, are equally applicable, after proper adjustments, to other mammals on the brink of extinction. Through implementation of these ideas we hope to establish the foundation for reversal of some of the effects of what has been termed the sixth mass extinction event in the history of Earth, and the first anthropogenic one. Perinatal death accounts for a large percentage of foal mortality. The most serious threats to perinatal survival remain septicemia, hypoxia, and dysmaturity. Topics discussed in this article include biochemical indices of fetoplacental function and evaluation and management of the high-risk mare.

Management strategies for mares at risk for periparturient complications

Other therapeutic agents used in foals for specific diseases are discussed elsewhere. The marked effect of species, age, and degree of maturity on drug metabolism in the neonate reinforces the danger of interspecies extrapolation of pharmacology, the need for information specific for the foal, and the necessity for monitoring drug levels in the individual. Suggested antimicrobial doses are listed in Tables 3, 4, and 6. Recommended doses of anticonvulsants and sedatives are listed in Table 8 and in the article "Intensive Care of the Neonatal Foal." The following are recommendations for drug therapy in the neonate: Avoid unnecessary administration of drug to the dam at parturition because of possible placental transfer of the drug with subsequent effects on the neonate. If possible, avoid unnecessary drug therapy in foals under 30 days of age. Select a drug that undergoes minimal biotransformation (hepatic metabolism) and is not highly protein bound. Owing to probable immunodeficiency in the neonate, broad-spectrum, bactericidal drugs are preferred for treatment of life-threatening infections. Every attempt should be made to identify the etiologic agent so that drug therapy can be based on cultures and sensitivity test results to maximize the benefit-risk ratio. Parenteral (intramuscular or intravenous) drug administration is preferable to oral. Avoid drugs that are known oxidants, which may produce hemolysis or methemoglobinemia. In general, the same or a slightly higher initial dose should be employed in the neonate, but it should be given less frequently than in the adult if it has a high potential to cause toxicity. When possible, individual monitoring of serum levels of potentially toxic drugs should be employed in premature and newborn foals unless specific drug pharmacokinetics are known for that age group.

Aspects of Pharmacology in the Neonatal Foal

Data presented here support the hypothesis that serum relaxin is a reliable indicator of placental insufficiency in mares. Relaxin, as a biological marker of placental function and fetal well-being, may provide veterinarians with a useful diagnostic tool to help reduce the incidence of late-term abortions and stillbirths in horses.
