Over the years, the Internet has been enriched with new available communication technologies, for both fixed and mobile networks and devices, exhibiting an impressive growth in terms of performance, with steadily increasing available data rates. The Internet research community has kept trying to evolve the transport layer protocols to match the capabilities of modern networks, in order to fully reap the benefits of the new communication technologies. This paper surveys the main novelties related to transport protocols that have been recently proposed, identifying three main research trends: (i) the evolution of congestion control algorithms, to target optimal performance in challenging scenarios, possibly with the application of machine learning techniques; (ii) the proposal of brand new transport protocols, alternative to the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and implemented in the user-space; and (iii) the introduction of multipath capabilities at the transport layer.

A Survey on Recent Advances in Transport Layer Protocols

In data center networks, many network-intensive applications leverage large fan-in and many-to-one communication to achieve high performance. However, the special traffic patterns, such as micro-burst and high concurrency, easily cause TCP Incast problem and seriously degrade the application performance. To address the TCP Incast problem, we first reveal theoretically and empirically that alleviating packet burstiness is much more effective in reducing the Incast probability than controlling the congestion window. Inspired by the findings and insights from our experimental observations, we further propose a general supporting scheme Adaptive Pacing (AP), which dynamically adjusts burstiness according to the flow concurrency without any change on switch. Another feature of AP is its broad applicability. We integrate AP transparently into different TCP protocols (i.e., DCTCP, L2DCT and D2TCP). Through a series of large-scale NS2 simulations, we show that AP significantly reduces the Incast probability across different TCP protocols and the network goodput can be increased consistently by on average 7x under severe congestion.

Flow-Aware Adaptive Pacing to Mitigate TCP Incast in Data Center Networks

Through a series of large-scale NS2 simulations and testbed experiments, we show that AP significantly reduces the Incast probability across different TCP protocols and the network goodput can be increased consistently by on average $7\times $ under severe congestion.

In data center networks (DCNs), the presence of long-lived TCP flows tends to bloat the switch buffers. As a consequence, short-lived TCP-incast traffic suffers repeated losses that often lead to loss recovery via timeout. Because the minimum retransmission timeout (minRTO) in most TCP implementations is fixed to around 200 ms, interactive applications that often generate short-lived incast traffic tend to suffer unnecessarily long delays waiting for the timeout to elapse. The best and most direct solution to such problem would be to customize the minRTO to match DCNs delays; however, this is not always possible; in particular in public data centers where multiple tenants, with various versions of TCP, co-exist. In this paper, we propose to achieve the same result by using techniques and technologies that are already available in most commodity switches and data centers and that do not interfere with the tenant’s virtual machines or TCP protocol. In this approach, we rely on the programmable nature of SDN switches and design a SDN-based incast congestion control (SICC) framework, that uses a SDN network application in the controller and a shim-layer in the host hypervisor, to mitigate incast congestion. We demonstrate the performance gains of the proposed scheme via real deployment in a small-scale testbed as well as ns2 simulation experiments in networks of various sizes and settings.

Mitigating Incast-TCP Congestion in Data Centers with SDN

TCP incast solutions in data center networks: A classification and survey

Since TCP Incast has been identified as a catastrophic problem in many typical data center applications, a lot of efforts have been made to analyze or solve it. The analysis work intends to model Incast problem from certain perspective, and the solutions try to solve the problem through designing enhanced mechanisms or algorithms. However, the proposed models are either closely coupled with particular protocol version or dependent on empirical observations, and the solutions cannot eliminate Incast problem entirely because the underlying issues are not identified completely. There is little work which attempts to close the gap between “analyzing” and “solving”, and present a comprehensive understanding. In this paper, we provide an in-depth understanding of how TCP Incast problem happens. We build up an interpretive model which emphasizes particularly on describing qualitatively how various factors, including system parameters and mechanism variables, affect network performances in Incast traffic pattern, but not on calculating the accurate throughput. With this model, we give plausible explanations why the various solutions for TCP Incast problem can help, but do not solve it entirely.

Comprehensive understanding of TCP Incast problem

Because of the terrible performance of TCP protocol in data center environment, DCTCP has been proposed as a TCP replacement, which uses a simple marking mechanism at switches and a few amendments at end hosts to adjust congestion window based on the extent of the congestion in networks. Thus, DCTCP can make a proper tradeoff between high throughput and low latency. However, through our observation, we discover that DCTCP causes severe oscillation of queue under some parameters and network configuration. Our perceptual analysis concludes that the rough single-threshold marking mechanism may be the essential reason. Therefore, we propose Double-Threshold DCTCP as an improvement of DCTCP. Then, by applying describing function method in nonlinear control theory, we analyze the stability of both DCTCP and Double-Threshold DCTCP, and theoretically explain why Double-Threshold DCTCP is more stable than DCTCP. At last, we validate theoretical analysis and conclude that the Double- Threshold DCTCP can achieve smaller queue, and the queue length of Double-Threshold DCTCP is less sensitive to the growing number of flows. Further, Double-Threshold DCTCP can postpone the throughput collapse caused by Incast traffic and reduce the tail latency in completion time experiment.
