The applications of copper (Cu) and Cu-based nanoparticles, which are based on the earth-abundant and inexpensive copper metal, have generated a great deal of interest in recent years, especially in the field of catalysis. The possible modification of the chemical and physical properties of these nanoparticles using different synthetic strategies and conditions and/or via postsynthetic chemical treatments has been largely responsible for the rapid growth of interest in these nanomaterials and their applications in catalysis. In addition, the design and development of novel support and/or multimetallic systems (e.g., alloys, etc.) has also made significant contributions to the field. Cu and Cu-Based Nanoparticles: Synthesis and Applications in Catalysis.

Copper-catalyzed Ullmann condensations are key reactions for the formation of carbon-heteroatom and carbon-carbon bonds in organic synthesis. These reactions can lead to structural moieties that are prevalent in building blocks of active molecules in the life sciences and in many material precursors. An increasing number of publications have appeared concerning Ullmann-type intermolecular reactions for the coupling of aryl and vinyl halides with N, O, and C nucleophiles, and this Minireview highlights recent and major developments in this topic since 2004.

140 years ago Adolf von Baeyer proposed the structure of a heteroaromatic compound which revolutionized organic and medical chemistry: indole. After more than a century, indole itself and the complexity of naturally occurring indole derivatives continue to inspire and influence developments in synthetic chemistry. In particular, the ubiquitous presence of indole rings in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and functional materials are testament to the ever increasing interest in the design of mild and efficient synthetic routes to functionalized indole derivatives. This Review emphasizes the achievements in the selective catalytic functionalization of indoles (C-C bond-forming processes) over the last four years.

Recent advances in ionic liquid catalysis

The direct and site-selective transition metal-catalysed N1-, C2- or C3-arylations of indoles have been the subject of almost continuous improve- ments since their discovery in early 1980s. This re- search area is mainly motivated by the biological relevance of this class of compounds in order to pro- pose catalytic alternative syntheses to the well known methodologies involving the formation of the indole ring like the Fischer, Larock, Cacchi, Lautens etc. reactions. Since the late 1990s it has experienced new impulses related to the intensive development of catalytic CH activation. Today, through the in- tensive studies of Buchwald and Hartwig, the N1-ar- ylation of indoles has reached sufficient maturity for both academic and industrial applications. On the other hand, the selective C2- or C3-arylation of in- doles, initiated by Ohta in the middle 1980s, has become a hot research area these last years following the reports of Sames. Surprisingly, only few reports concern the use of heterogeneous catalysts; however, the application of these emerging methodologies seems to be related to the discovery of industrially attractive systems.

Transition Metal‐Catalysed, Direct and Site‐Selective N1‐, C2‐ or C3‐Arylation of the Indole Nucleus: 20 Years of Improvements

Novel supported task-specific ionic liquids have been developed for the first time via the ionic-pair coupling of imidazolium cation of the modified polystyrene support with l-proline. The materials have shown an efficient metal scavenging ability (e.g., CuI, Pd(OAc)2, Pd0, and IrCl3) without the aid of a nonimmobilized ionic liquid, which relies on the highly synergistic effect of the coordination with the nitrogen atom and the COO- group of the l-proline moiety, electrostatic forces, and steric protection. The resulting metal-soaked supported ionic liquids can be used as efficient heterogeneous catalysts. These materials have been investigated in the CuI-catalyzed N-arylation of nitrogen-containing heterocycles and exhibit much higher catalytic activity and a more extensive structural range of aryl and heteroaryl halides than those exhibited by free l-proline in combination with CuI both in the ionic liquid ([BMIM][BF4]) and in the corresponding homogeneous reaction conditions.
