Urban road traffic system is a time-evolving, directed weighted network in which both the topological structure and traffic flow should be considered. In this work, we collect the real-time traffic data of Xiaoshan district of Hangzhou city in China, to empirically study the properties of the traffic network. We show that the traffic patterns at different times during a day vary significantly. Specifically, at rush hours, more roads with low average velocity would emerge. Correspondingly, the average weight density at rush hours becomes smaller, while the variance increases, meaning that the traffic becomes more heterogeneous. By introducing a null model in which link weights are randomly shuffled, we find that the connected links are correlated, implying that the congested roads do not emerge at random in the network. Finally, we apply the percolation theory to study the influence of weather on the traffic network. We show that, on a rainy weekday, the traffic is more congested than that on a sunny weekday; while the result is opposite for weekends.

Parking demand exceeding parking supply and uneven parking demand distribution are the existing conflicts in city centers. Parking pricing is frequently utilized to manage parking resources. This study aims to assess different parking pricing strategies through simulations for providing operational suggestions for urban parking managers. Two widely used parking pricing strategies in China combined with an optimized parking pricing strategy are proposed and compared. We introduce an agent-based simulation system to describe the parking and traffic conditions. Various measures of effectiveness under different parking pricing strategies can be obtained via agent-based simulations. We then construct a comprehensive benefit combining average cost and failure rate. Results show that the second strategy with charging different parking fees by considering locations and third optimized strategy can effectively improve traffic efficiency. However, the second strategy may lead to higher average cost than that of the third one. Thus, the third optimized strategy performs the best and can be used to optimize the parking policy of parking managers in the future. The entire assessment through simulations can provide evaluation suggestions for parking managers to adjust parking policies.

Assessment of Different Parking Pricing Strategies: A Simulation-based Analysis

Previous urban traffic network-based studies have been based mostly on single-layer networks. Based on their shortcomings, starting from the perspective of a multilayer urban traffic network, this paper takes the different anticongestion abilities and network characteristics of various network structures under the condition of traffic congestion as the research object. Then, a comparative experiment is performed via simulation, and the optimal multilayer urban traffic network topology is obtained under different conditions. It is found that these scale-free related multilayer networks have relatively strong ability to support more traffic flows and have higher anticongestion abilities, regardless of whether it is a lower-layer or upper-layer network. The research results are helpful to deepen our understanding of the characteristics of traffic network structures, help scholars further cognize the structural properties of multilayer urban traffic networks, practically help urban traffic network planners to further optimize the urban traffic network, and broaden the study of multilayer traffic networks.
