Complexation and reduction of iron by phenolic substances: Implications for transport of dissolved Fe from peatlands to aquatic ecosystems and global iron cycling

Soil contamination by heavy metals poses major risks to human health and the environment. Given the current status of heavy metal pollution, many remediation techniques have been tested at laboratory and contaminated sites. The effects of soil organic matter-mediated electron transfer on heavy metal remediation have not been adequately studied, and the key mechanisms underlying this process have not yet been elucidated. In this review, microbial extracellular electron transfer pathways, organic matter electron transfer for heavy metal reduction, and the factors affecting these processes were discussed to enhance our understanding of heavy metal pollution. It was found that microbial extracellular electrons delivered by electron shuttles have the longest distance among the three electron transfer pathways, and the application of exogenous electron shuttles lays the foundation for efficient and persistent remediation of heavy metals. The organic matter-mediated electron transfer process, wherein organic matter acts as an electron shuttle, promotes the conversion of high valence state metal ions, such as Cr(VI), Hg(II), and U(VI), into less toxic and morphologically stable forms, which inhibits their mobility and bioavailability. Soil type, organic matter structural and content, heavy metal concentrations, and environmental factors (e.g., pH, redox potential, oxygen conditions, and temperature) all influence organic matter-mediated electron transfer processes and bioremediation of heavy metals. Organic matter can more effectively mediate electron transfer for heavy metal remediation under anaerobic conditions, as well as when the heavy metal content is low and the redox potential is suitable under fluvo-aquic/paddy soil conditions. Organic matter with high aromaticity, quinone groups, and phenol groups has a stronger electron transfer ability. This review provides new insights into the control and management of soil contamination and heavy metal remediation technologies.

Mechanistic study on laccase-mediated formation of Fe-OM associations in peatlands

Biodegradation and photolysis of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in boreal high-latitude waters are the two main factors controlling not only the aquatic fluxes and residence time of carbon but also metal nutrients associated with DOM such as Fe. The DOM is usually present in the form of organic and organomineral colloids, which also account for the majority of dissolved Fe. Here, we use the stable Fe isotope approach to unravel the processes controlling Fe behavior during bio- and photodegradation of colloids in boreal Fe- and DOM-rich humic waters (a stream and a fen). The adsorption of Fe colloids onto heterotrophic bacteria Pseudomonas aureofaciens produced enrichment in +0.4‰ (δ57Fe) in the heavier isotopes of the cell surface relative to the remaining solution. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the cadmium adsorption capacity of iron–organic associations (Fe-OM) formed by laccase-mediated modification and assess the effect of Fe-OM on the immobilization of cadmium in paddy soil. Leaf organic matter (OM) was extracted from Changshan grapefruit leaves, and then dissolved organic matter (Lac-OM) and precipitated organic matter (Lac-P) were obtained by laccase catalytic modification. Different Fe-OM associations were obtained by co-precipitation of Fe with OM, Lac-OM, and Lac-P, respectively, and the adsorption kinetics, adsorption edge, and isothermal adsorption experiments of Cd on Fe-OM were carried out. Based on the in situ generation of Fe-OM, passivation experiments on Cd-contaminated soils with a high geological background were carried out. All types of Fe-OM have a better Cd adsorption capacity than ferrihydrite (FH). The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of the OM-FH, Lac-OM-FH, and Lac-P-FH were 2.2, 2.53, and 2.98 times higher than that of FH, respectively. The adsorption of Cd on Fe-OM is mainly chemisorption, and the -OH moieties on the Fe-OM surface form an inner-sphere complex with the Cd ions. Lac-OM-FH showed a higher Cd adsorption capacity than OM-FH, which is related to the formation of more oxygen-containing groups in the organic matter modified by laccase. The immobilization effect of Lac-OM-FH on active Cd in soil was also higher than that of OM-FH. The Lac-OM-FH formed by laccase-mediated modification has better Cd adsorption performance, which can effectively inactivate the activity of Cd in paddy soil.
