A family of 4-(1,1,7-trihydroperfluoroheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl 4'-n-alkoxybiphenyl-4-car- boxylates has been synthesized. The compounds show the smectic A phase while the mesogens with intermediate terminal alkyl chain (n 7-12) also exhibit a broad smectic C phase.

Molecular and dynamical properties of a perfluorinated liquid crystal with direct transition from ferroelectric SmC⁎ phase to isotropic phase

One series of two-ring and two series of three-ring liquid crystal compounds, all containing omega, alpha, alpha-trihydroperfluoroalkoxy terminal tails, were prepared and characterized by IR, NMR, MS and elemental analysis. Their phase transition behaviour was investigated by DSC and polarizing optical microscopy. Biphenylene derivatives with the omega, alpha, alpha-trihydroperfluoroalkoxy end group form a stable smectic A phase. In the three-ring system, biphenylene ester compounds exhibit a smectic phase without a nematic phase. The compounds exhibit smectic A and smectic C phases when the terminal groups are intermediate length alkyl and fluorinated alkyl chains. Mesogens with fluorinated tails have a broader smectic C phase than the non-fluorinated mesogens.

Three homologous series of new compounds containing 2,3-difluorophenylene and trans-1,4-substituted cyclohexane have been synthesized by a coupling reaction with Pd(PPh3)2Cl2 as the catalyst. Their liquid crystalline properties have been studied by optical polarizing microscopy and DSC. The relationship between the properties and chemical structures of the target compounds is discussed in detail.

2,3-Difluorinated phenyl and cyclohexane units in the design and synthesis of liquid crystals having negative dielectric anisotropy

To continue the search for novel series of fluorinated ferroelectric liquid crystals, an additional two series of 4-[(S)-2-methylbutoxy]phenyl 4-[(4-n-alkoxy-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)ethynyl] benzoates (C) and 4-(n-alkoxy)phenyl 4-[(4-(S)-2′-methylbutoxy-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)] benzoates (D) have been synthesized. Polarizing microscopic textural observations and DSC measurements of the phase transitions of these novel compounds showed that compounds C were liquid crystals with a chiral nematic (N) phase and a monotropic chiral smectic C phase (Sc), and compounds D exhibited a chiral nematic (N) phase.
