Clusterization-triggered emission: Uncommon luminescence from common materials

White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) are superior to traditional incandescent light bulbs and compact fluorescent lamps in terms of their merits in ensuring pure white-light emission, low-energy consumption, large-area thin-film fabrication, etc. Unfortunately, WOLEDs based on multilayered or multicomponent (red, green, and blue (RGB)) emissive layers can suffer from some remarkable disadvantages, such as intricate device fabrication and voltage-dependent emission color, etc. Single molecules, which can emit white light, can be used to replace multiple emitters, leading to a simplified fabrication process, stable and reproducible WOLEDs. Recently, the performance of WOLEDs by using single molecules is catching up with that of the state-of-the-art devices fabricated by multicomponent emitters. Therefore, an increasing attention has been paid on single white-light-emitting materials for efficient WOLEDs. In this review, different mechanisms of white-light emission from a single molecule and the performance of single-molecule-based WOLEDs are collected and expounded, hoping to light up the interesting subject on single-molecule white-light-emitting materials, which have great potential as white-light emitters for illumination and lighting applications in the world.

Single-Molecular White-Light Emitters and Their Potential WOLED Applications.

Highly efficient luminescent materials in solid states are promising candidates for the development of organic optoelectrical materials and devices and chemical and biological sensors. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE), a novel photophyscial phenomena coined in 2001 where the aggregate formation enhances the light emission, has drawn great attention because it provides a fantastic platform for the development of these useful luminescent materials. After 17 years of AIE research, diverse AIE luminogens with tunable color and high quantum yields have been explored, which finds diverse applications from optics and electronics to energy and bioscience. Journey of Aggregation-Induced Emission Research

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) containing a few to a few hundreds of atoms bridge the gap between nanoparticles and molecular compounds. The last decade evidenced impressive developments of noble metal NCs such as Au and Ag. Copper is an earth abundant, inexpensive metal from the same group of the periodic table, which is increasingly coming into focus for NC research. This review specifically addresses wet chemical synthesis methods, optical properties and some emerging applications of Cu NCs. As surface protecting templates/ligands play an important role in the stability and properties of Cu NCs, we classified the synthetic methods by the nature of the capping agents. The optical properties of Cu NCs are discussed from the point of view of the effects of the metal core, surface ligands and environment (solvents and aggregation) on the emission of the clusters. Applications of luminescent Cu NCs in biological imaging and light emitting devices are considered.

Synthesis, optical properties and applications of light-emitting copper nanoclusters

Highly fluorescent copper nanoclusters for sensing and bioimaging.

Most of the present-day down-conversion white light-emitting devices (WLEDs) utilize rare-earth elements, which are expensive and facing the problem of shortage in supply. WLEDs based on the combination of orange and blue emitting copper nanoclusters are introduced, which are easy to produce and low in cost. Orange emitting Cu nanoclusters (NCs) are synthesized using glutathione as both the reduction agent and stabilizer, followed by solvent induced aggregation leading to the emission enhancement. Photoluminescence quantum yields (PL QY) of 24% and 43% in solution and solid state are achieved, respectively. Blue emitting Cu nanoclusters are synthesized by reduction of polyvinylpyrrolidone supported Cu(II) ions using ascorbic acid, followed by surface treatment with sodium citrate which improves both the emission intensity and stability of the clusters, resulting in the PL QY of 14% both in solution and solid state. All-copper nanocluster based down-conversion WLEDs are fabricated by integrating powdered orange and blue emitting Cu NC samples on a commercial GaN LED chip providing 370 nm excitation. They show favorable white light characteristics with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage color coordinates, color rendering index, and correlated color temperature of (0.36, 0.31), 92, and 4163 K, respectively.
