In-process calibration of a non-destructive testing system used for in-process inspection of multi-pass welding

In recent years, cemented carbide has become one of the most popular materials used for tools and wear-resistant parts because the high strength and hardness. Cemented carbides also are the material that extremely difficult to machine, the high-hard and brittle properties bring huge challenges for the mechanical machining process. Among various traditional machining methods, the abrasive machining processes are the most commonly used in machining of cemented carbide. With the development of super-hard cutting tools, the cutting process also has gradually been used in machining of cemented carbide, especially the precision mold field. The purpose of this review is to offer the latest technological developments in the traditional cutting and abrasive machining processes of cemented carbide. Firstly, the microstructure and development of cemented carbide materials has been briefly presented. Then, the current researches and achievements on the cutting and abrasive machining of cemented carbide materials are reviewed and summarized. The comparison and challenges in different cutting and abrasive machining of cemented carbide are discussed. Finally, the future research directions in machining of cemented carbide are proposed based on the review. 

A comprehensive review on the cutting and abrasive machining of cemented carbide materials

Modeling and simulation using finite element method (FEM) is a powerful estimation tool and has been greatly helpful to study the metal cutting process, such as investigation of cutting mechanism, optimization of cutting parameters, and design of cutting tools. Thereinto, an effective material model and its parameters are still key problems in the FEM-modeling of metal cutting. In this paper, a 2D FE model for simulating the orthogonal cutting of tungsten carbide WC-17.5Co is developed, in which an inverse identification approach is used to identify the parameters of material model based on orthogonal cutting experiments. The commercially available software DEFORM V11.0 is utilized to develop the FE model, whereas the Johnson–Cook model and Brozzo model are selected as the constitutive model and the fracture model of the work material, respectively. Continuous serrated chip formation is obtained in experiments as well as in FE simulations. The simulated chip morphology, cutting force, and specific cutting force are compared with the experimental results to identify the parameters of the material model. It is found that the chip morphology is more difficult to be used to identify inversely the material model parameters than the cutting force and specific cutting force. The material model parameters are derived, and the verification tests show that there is a close agreement between the simulated and experimental results through comparisons of cutting force and specific cutting force. It indicates that the inversely identified parameters of the Johnson–Cook model and the Brozzo model can be used to describe the mechanical property of tungsten carbide.

Superhydrophobic surfaces rely on a large number of surface micro/nano structures to increase the roughness of a material. Producing such structures is possible through a multitude of relatively slow methods; however, economic and large scale production of superhydrophobic surfaces require using a fast process on a cheap substrate. Here, we used femtosecond laser processing to fabricate micro and nanostructures on tungsten carbide that we use as a mold to thermally imprint polypropylene sheets. The fabricated tungsten carbide mold was used to imprint more than twenty superhydrophobic polypropylene sheets before mold contamination reduces the surface contact angle below 150°. Using Toluene solution, the mold is subsequently capable of being cleaned of contamination from polypropylene residue and reused for further imprinting. Ninety thermoplastic imprints were conducted using a single tungsten carbide mold with only minimal structural degradation apparent on the micro/nano structured surface.
