Atomically thin 2D films and their van der Waals heterostructures have demonstrated immense potential for breakthroughs and innovations in science and technology. Integrating 2D films into electronics and optoelectronics devices and their applications in electronics and optoelectronics can lead to improve device efficiencies and tunability. Consequently, there has been steady progress in large-area 2D films for both front- and back-end technologies, with a keen interest in optimizing different growth and synthetic techniques. Parallelly, a significant amount of attention has been directed toward efficient transfer techniques of 2D films on different substrates. Current methods for synthesizing 2D films often involve high-temperature synthesis, precursors, and growth stimulants with highly chemical reactivity. This limitation hinders the widespread applications of 2D films. As a result, reports concerning transfer strategies of 2D films from bare substrates to target substrates have proliferated, showcasing varying degrees of cleanliness, surface damage, and material uniformity. This review aims to evaluate, discuss, and provide an overview of the most advanced transfer methods to date, encompassing wet, dry, and quasi-dry transfer methods. The processes, mechanisms, and pros and cons of each transfer method are critically summarized. Furthermore, we discuss the feasibility of these 2D film transfer methods, concerning their applications in devices and various technology platforms. 

Transfer of 2D Films: From Imperfection to Perfection

The optical features of gold nanorods (GNR) may be precisely controlled by manipulating their size, shape, and aspect ratio. This review explores the impact of these parameters on the optical tuning of (GNR). By altering the experimental conditions, like the addition of silver ions during the seed-mediated growth process, the aspect ratio of (GNR) may be regulated. The shape is trans from spherical to rod-like structures resulting in noticeable changes in the nanoparticles surface plasmons resonance (SPR) bands. The longitudinal SPR band, associated with electron oscillations along the long axis, exhibits a pronounced red shift into the (NIR) region as the aspect ratio increases. In contrast, the transverse SPR band remains relate unchanged. Using computational methods like the discrete dipole approximation (DDA) allows for analyzing absorption, scattering, and total extinction features of gold (G) nanoparticles. Studies have shown that increasing the aspect ratio enhances the scattering efficiency, indicating a higher scattering quantum yield (QY). These findings highlight the importance of size, shape, and aspect ratio in controlling the optical features of (GNR) providing valuable insights for various uses in nanophotonics and plasmonic-dependent fluorescence in cancer treatment and developing new photonic compound NRs. 

The energetic and physical concept of gold nanorod-dependent fluorescence in cancer treatment and development of new photonic compounds|review

Photocatalysis, as an alternative for treating persistent water pollutants, holds immense promise. However, limitations hinder sustained treatment and recycling under varying light conditions. This comprehensive review delves into the novel paradigm of metal and non-metal doping to overcome these challenges. It begins by discussing the fundamental principles of photocatalysis and its inherent limitations. Understanding these constraints is crucial for developing effective strategies. Band gap narrowing by metal and non-metal doping modifies the band gap, enabling visible-light absorption. Impurity energy levels and oxygen vacancies influenced the doping energy levels and surface defects. Interfacial electron transfer and charge carrier recombination are the most important factors that impact overall efficiency. The comparative analysis of nanomaterials are reviewed on various, including nanometal oxides, nanocarbon materials, and advanced two-dimensional structures. The synthesis process are narratively presented, emphasizing production yields, selectivity, and efficiency. The review has potential applications in the environment for efficient pollutant removal and water purification, economic cost-effective and scalable production and technological advancement catalyst design, in spite of its challenges in material stability, synthesis methods and optimizing band gaps. The novelty of the review paper is on the proposal of a new paradigm of heterojunctions of doped metal and non-metal photocatalysts to promise highly efficient water treatment. This review bridges the gap between fundamental research and practical applications, offering insights into tailored nano photocatalysts. 

How can heteroatoms boost the performance of photoactive nanomaterials for wastewater purification?

With the assistance of van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy, nanometer-thick and highly conductive gold films are deposited onto MoS2 surfaces for use as transparent anode electrodes in quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrates. After transferring wafer-scale and monolayer MoS2 to PET substrates, 10 nm thick gold (Au) films are deposited onto the two-dimensional (2D) material surfaces as anode electrodes. Bounded only by weak vdW forces on 2D material surfaces, the diffusive Au adatoms tend to facilitate lateral growth and lead to the formation of continuous and highly conductive thin metal films in the nanometer regime. The Au film exhibits excellent tensile bending stability for its sheet resistance, which is superior to that of rigid indium-tin oxide (ITO) films on PET substrates. Thermally stable CdSe@CdZnS/ZnS QLEDs are fabricated on the PET substrate. Compared with devices fabricated on sapphire substrates, the phenomenon of sub-bandgap turn-on is observed for the flexible device. Based on our demonstrations, the high conductivity and robust durability toward substrate bending make the nanometer-thick Au film grown on 2D material surfaces a promising candidate to replace current ITO anode electrodes for flexible device applications.

Van der Waals Epitaxy of Thin Gold Films on 2D Material Surfaces for Transparent Electrodes: All-Solution-Processed Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes on Flexible Substrates.

The rate at which graphene is used in different fields of science and engineering has only increased over the past decade and shows no indication of saturating. At the same time, the most common source of high-quality graphene is through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth on copper foils with subsequent wet transfer steps that bring environmental problems and technical challenges due to the compliance of copper foils. To overcome these issues, thin copper films deposited on silicon wafers have been used, but the high temperatures required for graphene growth can cause dewetting of the copper film and consequent challenges in obtaining uniform growth. In this work, we explore sapphire as a substrate for the direct growth of graphene without any metal catalyst at conventional metal CVD temperatures. First, we found that annealing the substrate prior to growth was a crucial step to improve the quality of graphene that can be grown directly on such substrates. The graphene grown on annealed sapphire was uniformly bilayer and had some of the lowest Raman D/G ratios found in the literature. In addition, dry transfer experiments have been performed that have provided a direct measure of the adhesion energy, strength, and range of interactions at the sapphire/graphene interface. The adhesion energy of graphene to sapphire is lower than that of graphene grown on copper, but the strength of the graphene–sapphire interaction is higher. The quality of the several centimeter scale transfer was evaluated using Raman, SEM, and AFM as well as fracture mechanics concepts. Based on the evaluation of the electrical characteristics of the graphene synthesized in this work, this work has implications for several potential electronic applications. 

Direct Metal-Free Growth and Dry Separation of Bilayer Graphene on Sapphire: Implications for Electronic Applications

Layer-by-layer graphene growth is demonstrated by repeating CVD growth cycles directly on sapphire substrates. Improved field-effect mobility values are observed for the bottom-gate transistors fabricated by using the bilayer graphene channel, which indicates an improved crystallinity is obtained after the second CVD growth cycle. Despite the poor wettability of copper on graphene surfaces, graphene may act as a thin and effective diffusion barrier for copper atoms. The low resistivity values of thin copper films deposited on thin monolayer MoS2/monolayer graphene heterostructures have demonstrated its potential to replace current thick liner/barrier stacks in back-end interconnects. The unique van der Waals epitaxy growth mode will be helpful for both homo- and heteroepitaxy on 2D material surfaces.
